What a beauty of a ruin towering in the midth of river Dee! The car park is about a 15 min walk away from the boat crossing. If the weather is nice, it's a lovely walk along a small country path down to the river. You ring the bell and the lovely boat man comes and takes you to the middle of the river where the castle is in plain sight. It's a wee ride to the island. You can go inside the castle and see the well, the dungeon, the rooms above and walk around the island or just sit on a bank and enjoy the sun tickling your skin. Toilets are at the car park. Ticket office on the island. The castle has lots of history and was build by the Black Douglas who was a strong supporter of the king at that time. Apparently the water level was higher in the middle ages, such the castle was quite a fortress. Enjoy the trip! read more

Quite a trek from parking the car to the castle, so it maybe a little difficult for someone who cannot walk far. But well worth the walk if you can. Access to the castle is via a small boat. The views from the castle are superb. There are plenty of staff on hand to answer any questions about the castle. There was a quiz for the children which involved them have to read the information panels, and therefore educate themselves at the same time. If you like ruins Threave Castle is certainly worth a visit. read more

A 14th century castle it is a good walk to the edge of the river where you get the boat across so make sure it is open before you go I would say probably about 5 minutes You ring the bell and the man rows you across takes your money and waits for you and rows you back. Must be pretty lonely for him and last time we went we had to wait a while as we think he had been to the nearby farm house for his lunch so check the times of opening in case it his lunch time Archibald, 5th Earl of Douglas who owned it was regent to James II when he died there was a siege at the castle and you can see where they built up the battlements The prison there is quite scary a good walk round the castle and back across the river Worth a trip out read more

Lovely romantic castle on an island in a river. You get there by a small ferry. You have to walk quite a bit since the surrounding land belongs to a farmer that doesn't want a road. read more
