    Tofu pakora

This was my second visit to Three Birds - I couldn't review my first visit as I was mortified at setting a napkin on fire - so I'm glad to say I returned for another visit which didn't have quite such a fiery end. This is a busy restaurant and I'm guessing you always need a booking to come here - we were dining on a Monday night and the place was pretty much full. The menu is very meaty (as the name of the restaurant would suggest) but there are some veggie/vegan options like tofu pakora, veggie mezze platter and a delicious salad main of roast squash. We ordered some platters to share between us: the 3 Birds & Beasts platter, and the Big Cow platter (between 5 people). For me the stand out was the big cow platter, the meat was delicious and it came with a generous amount of sides like greens, mushrooms, bone marrow, sauces and fries. I also really liked the southern fried chicken from the 3 Birds platter. All up, this is a place with delicious cooking in a chilled environment with friendly service. Just don't put your napkin too close to the candle, it's pretty embarrassing.

I really liked this little gem of a restaurant in the 'Burgh. Jenny L. had admitted that after our team trip to Edinburgh last time, she was a bit stumped as to where to take us. We had, had an excellent meal at Field last year and I was a bit unsure as to where she would find that would trump that... Well, Three Birds had a cracking good go. We jumped in a cab from the G&V and initially the guy who ordered us the cab had no idea where we the Three Birds was. Luckily, I had the venue bookmarked for handy address finding and after arming the driver with the info we zoomed out way to Viewforth. This is a twee looking little place, with a bright exterior and big windows. It's very cosy inside with enough seating to create a fun atmosphere when full, but not so many people that it becomes noisy. After enjoying a couple of glasses of rather fine wine, I opted for the beetroot soup to start (this was a winner with the shredded chicken) and me and Jody B. shared a "Birds and Beasts" platter for mains. I really hadn't needed a starter. There was more than enough food to feed three people, let alone two after starters. The steak and pulled pork were the stars of the show for me, but everything was really good. I couldn't manage a dessert, but these looked great regardless! The service and food was spot on and it was a great choice for a fun, but not too stuffy, meal out with our team.

Ginger and honey pork meatballs with a vegetable/noodle salad going on beneath. So. Good.

Three Birds is a gem nestled in the heart of Bruntsfield. Every meal I've had has been excellent. I admit, I don't understand half the words on the menu. But take the leap of faith and they will always deliver. The menu changes every few months and the specials change daily. Everything sounds amazing, and I am legitimately saddened knowing that I can't try them all. The restaurant itself is cosy and has tasteful, semi-hipster decor. The prices are quite reasonable - wine for under £5 and any appetizer/entrée combination for £10. The staff is always polite and friendly. My only complaint: they kept us waiting quite a while before we got the bill, even though they had cleared all our plates. We live down the street from Three Birds and walk past it every day. I have never seen it empty, and I don't expect I ever will.

    Veggie mezze platter.

I came here with Jenny L for a catch up dinner and to try out this tucked-away restaurant up Bruntsfield way. I went for a bowl of soup for starters, the veggie mezze platter for mains with a side of chips. I was too stuffed for pudding! The food here is home-made, fresh and unusual. My soup was very tasty - barley broth if I remember correctly - and was meant to come with kidney something or other (except it didn't as the kitchen was out). So an odd and interesting combo. And very nice too! The mezze platter was weirdness personified, but not in a bad way. I've never seen a mezze plate like it (see pics!). There were some very, very strong flavours and everything struck me as just a bit out of left field. The baba ganoush was extremely smoky, there were pickled carrots that tasted like coffee and hard-boiled eggs that had something extra added. It was an odd plate of food. Just a bit weird.... I kept calling my plate the David Lynch of dinners, haha. And it was! I would definitely come back here to try more of the menu and find out what oddities and delights await my palate...

Pigs ears with sea salt and aioli

Went here with my friends to test out the new taster menu before the official launch of Three Birds. (Half-off, woo!) First impressions: Similar layout to the previous restaurant Le Mouton Noir, but a bit lightened up. Great intimate and cosy vibes with approximately 9 tables. Also worth mentioning that the staff are all delightful and really knowledgable to the new menu. You would have thought they had been working there for a while. The menu looked delectable, and as a result we took some time in deciding. Our waitress was very attentive and enjoyed answering our questions with enthusiasm. There was a great mix on the menu. There is a decent selection of bites/sides along with starters and mains (about 4 or so) with a few specials on the boards. We went for: - Pigs ears with salt and aioli (see photo) - Large Vegetarian Mezze platter with goodies such as curried lentils, kimchi, oatcakes and hummus, pickled egg with beetroot, some sort of beetroot coleslaw, amazing spicy sweet potato cakes, and Asian cucumber. All displayed on a wooden board to share. (see photo) - The special of oxcheeks with a star anise jus. This was a bit small. The portion was lacking for the price. Mains we got: - Eggs ontop of tomato sauce with pine nuts, goats cheese, and flat bread. This was delicious, really enjoyed it as an interesting lunch. Nice and hot and presented in a frying pan (see photo) - Chicken thigh with rocket and tomato slices. It was expected that we pita chips in the salad were to be crispy, however they arrived a bit soggy. There was also an absence of balsamic on the salad, when the menu clearly stated the dressing was to contain my friend's favourite vinegar. Though, the waitress promptly brought over a small carafe with balsamic to drizzle atop the chicken salad when asked. Was a struggle to cut the chicken into smaller pieces because the bowl was quite small, however the flavours were an appealing balance of lemon with sweetness of the tomatos. - Smoked mackerel on a baguette. Looked delightful however could have used an extra piece of bread. A bit small for a main. Overall I'll be back. This was week 1 and it was delightful. I can't wait to see how they progress with their menu and frequent this local when I can! p.s they have Wi-Fi!

    Bread with dukkah and oils

Yay I'm a fan describes my feelings about this restaurant well. My boyfriend took me here for my birthday dinner after it was highly recommended by a work colleague (her girlfriend is the head chef so I had high hopes!). The restaurant is small, even by Edinburgh standards so booking is essential. There's maybe enough tables to seat about 20 but it's a cosy atmosphere not w cramped one. The service staff seemed helpful and our waitress was definitely super friendly which made the evening a really nice experience. We kept things simple and ordered the feta and pistachio dip and bread with dukkah and oils to share while we waited for our birds and beast platter. The feta dip was incredibly moreish to the point I'll need to try and recreate it at home. The bread with oils was tasty as well but the feta just really stood out. After a bit of a wait our platter arrived and I wish is taken a photo as this was no small feat ahead of us! The platter is made for two to share but could easily feed four as there's two hearty portions of everything. The platter had piri piri chicken wings, slow cooker ox cheek, a pulled pork croquette, beef shin with wasabi grilled cheese, baked beans, and Asian coleslaw. For someone who's not a massive meat eater I was a bit overwhelmed and barely made it through half of my portion. Everything was super tasty with a nice spicy kick but I was just defeated. Thankfully the waitress offered to wrap up any leftovers we wanted so I got to take home my chicken wings and ox cheek. After a bit of a rest we shared the cheese platter for pudding with a peppermint tea for me and an amaretto coffee for the boyfriend. The cheese is from Mellis so it was of a standard I'd expect and the chutney was quite nice as well. After a super filling evening we paid and left to waddle ourselves home. I definitely enjoyed three birds and will be back to try other items on their menu but I think it would help a lot if they cut down the size of their sharing platters as they're just too big for two people.

The ice cream menu, everything is delicious (if strange!)
    Benjamin H.

I've been here 3 times, and every time has been a completely different delicious experience. The menu is seasonal, and always has fresh local ingredients. The staff is incredibly friendly, and service is speedy without being intrusive. I've always had classic starters there, scallops, calamari, and they are cooked to perfection, with a special shout out to the scallops! The mains offer classic dishes with a delicious variety of preparations that really demonstrate the creativity and skill of the kitchen, e.g. Duck breast served on lentil dahl with rhubarb kimchi. Then the desserts are equally delicious, but their ice creams are what shine, with strange and delicious combinations like white chocolate and horseradish or orange and ginger. Absolutely recommended, and actually not too shabby for student celebrating a special occasion. Try the pig ears in the side!

Chicken Supreme. Simply put: inspiring. Brilliant meal.

And we left with full bellies, even though we only spent about 15 each! So, the food. YUM. We had some trouble deciding which of the menu items looked tastiest (we'll totally be back to try more options!), but she landed on the steak & ale pie, and i had the black pudding, tomato, & chorizo pie. Both were delicious--so tasty and satisfying! The chips that came with them (sweet potato for her, skin on for me) were perfect, and the mac & cheese side we split was also totally indulgent. We had sticky toffee pudding and a brownie for dessert, and those were so good they vanished pretty quickly even though we were already stuffed! We also got lucky and got to taste some of their soup of the day AND some fudge--both were heavenly. I'll be going back just to have some more of that soup, for sure. We both were really pleasantly surprised at how good the serving sizes were; I know I went in pretty hungry, and I came out COMPLETELY satiated. To top it all off, the waitress was an absolute delight. She was so sweet and patient, and she really went out of her way to spoil us! It almost felt like being at a friend's place. I'm really surprised I couldn't find any reviews on this place! It's such a treasure; we're really, really glad we gave it a try. I'll definitely be back. :)

Our waitress was very nice and even allowed us to taste a wine before we chose a bottle. It was kind of funny though, I asked for a taste and she brought out four glasses about 2 ounces each. That must not be a customary thing, I expected we would get one glass with a splash. But hey! I thought that was really nice! We enjoyed the wine and bought a bottle. I've never had a Romanian Pinot Noir before so I was a little hesitant before the taste. When the food came out, everyone's looked really good with the exception of mine. I ordered the truffle and beetroot risotto. A little background, I am obsessed with all things truffle and beet so I was really excited. I opted to add the prawns for a little protein. I should've put my hand next to the photo of the dish so that it gave it a little perspective, but it was very small and those "prawns" were tiny ass shrimp. I thought well at least if it tastes good, it'll make it worth it. I took a sniff, no characteristic scent of truffle, which I think any foodie knows is a super strong smell. I took a bite. Nothing. The dish literally had no flavor with the exception of the two Parmesan crisps. I felt like I was eating watery rice. After adding quite a bit of salt, I managed to bring out a hint of the beet flavor, but the truffle was still completely absent. The fish and chips was a nice sized portion, probably the best meal on the table overall. The pie of the moment which was mushroom and chicken tasted really good, but was a very small portion as well. The steak and chips was the upgraded 9 ounce sirloin from the original option on the menu. I'm not sure , what realm of the universe you could ever call that piece of meat 9 ounces. Like not even before cooking. Really the saving grace of the entire meal was when the manager came over at the end of the meal to collect the payment. He was so friendly and gave us a lot of really good suggestions for things to do in the area.

The decor's along the same lines as Tiger Lily, at least in the ground floor bar area & pretty comfy. Service was attentive and the Ladies is apparently well appointed. As I perused the menu, I noticed that when locals came in, orders would go straight to them - this was clearly a place where the locals returned and the staff took notice. When a young mother came in with a pram, said locals cooed over the baby, to which she exclaimed "He's the Prince of Morningside!" and they all filled the place with friendly noise. They had to compete with an Italian crooner: the soundtrack from discarded 1940s vinyl salvaged from opera but not pop as we know it. It works well with the eclectic decor - free form wood tables and chairs, a few clocks, art that is both for sale and for decoration, and a large downstairs area filled with curiosities. It was like a global village without any forced ethnicity...tiny sections of Turkey, Brazil, Scotland, Australia, North American Indian....pieces of each thrown together, as though someone had rolled a chest full of memories and then opened it as a cafe. Breakfast was so huge I couldn't finish it. The omelette left little room for any of the other accompaniments and the toast had to have its own plate. Not haute cuisine but it is what it says on the menu. The selection of cakes and pastries, however, looked amazing and completely unnecessary after breakfast. Given they have a good standard of latte, I'll be back to check out how the locals are doing, and how fresh that baklava is... Overall, it's a comfortingly strange mix but it seems the point of the Clock Cafe is that time stops, just for a little bit.

I love when people stick to what they know best - and that's just what Meltmongers do - a simple menu - done well. 3 breads - soft white, bloomer and sourdough; and a good selection of cheesey combos. We went for the classic (cheddar and american) and the smokey chilli (smoked applewood cheddar and jalepenos), both on sourdough. And of course a side of sweet potato fries. There are only a few 'tables' and a counter in the window. There is some empty space in the centre and as demand grows (which it will!) I'm more seating will appear. You can also take away. It wasn't long before we were tucking into our tasty toasties. Generously buttered (I hate when the outside edges are left dry), toasted to perfection and every bit of cheese melted and oozing. Seriously good! And the best sweet potato fries ever! The last ones I tried at a burger joint were greasy and rubbery. Not these! They were thin, crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside. My husband doesn't usually go for 'fancy chips'' but he ate more than I did! But, the single portion was plenty for both of us. This place was love at first sight but still a tiny bit of room for improvement. I enjoyed the sourdough, but I really love toasties on granary bread - when the bits go all crunchy and nutty, but there was no 'brown' option at all. My hubby didn't have to share his toasty with me; I love jalepenos but not smoked cheese - I'm sure that you could ask for changes to the set menu, but would like it to be more obvious. Maybe they could list optional extras and types of cheeses available on the menu; making it easier to create custom toasties (like a gruyere and garlic mushroom - hint hint) And introduce some more interesting cheeses - maybe as a daily special; like comte, or a blue. Although, I'd be perfectly happy to eat that classic toasty every day..... ps. I nearly forgot - they do sweet toasties too! Peanut butter and banana (I used to make peanut butter and cream cheese toasties - warm peanut butter is sooo good!) and marshmallow, nuttella and banana. This could get dangerous! And according to my hubby the coffee was great too!

Like Caz and Emily, I was a bit disappointed with what I experienced. Nothing wrong with service…read moreor the interior. The toastie wasn't a toastie. The bottom half was let's say mushy and greasy, and it was a little difficult to eat as it had no sturdiness of a toastie. Don't get me wrong the filling was nice and it was packed too. I ordered The Big Cheese: Mature cheddar, American and gruyère with sweet tomato and chilli chutney and expected a little more hit in the way of chilli. Another downside was the fact that both of the sauces on the tables were more or less finished and desperately needed to be renewed and cleaned. It's not going to get me to do a hasty return. I know better places in Bruntsfield that I'm prepared to part with my hard earned cash too. Yes one Napkin, what's that about? Seriously dudes the grilled sandwich is greasy. We customers need more napkins!

The first try was in the evening by and the wait was full. The second time was at lunch and with luck we got in. It is a pleasure! There are two places a few doors apart. One for reservations and one for the walk-ins. The place is modern and rustic, fits the vibe of the city. The staff are friendly and efficient with lots of knowledge about the food. The meal was outstanding. For a casual dining experience. This is a wonderful option. The haggis was a great version and the mash is lovely. Slightly creamy with the added flavors make it more than basic mash. The bacon and onion was not overpowering and complimented the haggis wonderfully. The lamb was perfect, fell off the bone with a deep rich sauce. The scotch bonnet added flavor without a lot of heat. The broccoli was perfectly steamed and still crispy. Everything was fresh and bright and balanced. We fully loved the entire experience!
