My 3 friends, one a professional chef, and I finally made reservations for this place after years of trying to figure out a time to come. We live over an hour away. We preordered the beef burek and then ordered a selection of other menu items family style to get a taste of everything we could (goulash, raznjci, chevapchici, Wiener schnitzel) Portions were perfect and the food delicious. Our server, Bryak, although newer, was outstanding and the other staff fantastic too. They are passionate about their food and the history of the place. Brando, one of the owners, stopped by our table and gave us a brief history of the building and restaurant. It was originally a Schlitz brewery, and the decor is a nod to the original purpose of the building. The recipes are over 6 generations old from their family in Serbia and have been unchanged - because don't fix what isn't broken. It's true comfort food. We will definitely be back for the roast suckling pig, the goose, grape leaves and chicken livers. Note these items will all take time so preorder or be prepared to wait an hour. Other dishes are less time so doing it in courses give you ample time. They also have a selection of Serbian beers and other beverages. I did not like the food here, but that should not dissuade you. It just wasn't appealing to me personally. I'll give you the best advice right up front: order the burek. They tell you on the menu that it will take an hour to prepare. Do NOT do what we did at my table and select something else. Our food took an hour to arrive ANYWAY. Wish I had the burek, because my chicken was disappointing. They give you five little slices of rye bread (for four people) and one pad of whipped butter while you're waiting. The appetizer came out 20 minutes later. The restaurant was a neat tribute to times gone by. The restauranteur revitalized a former Schlitz tavern, and preserved the Shlitz branding. You'll see the Schlitz globe on the spire of the building's exterior, and inside you'll see an oversized, cool ,retro Schlitz pendant light fixture. The tabletops are old school retro Formica, complete with metal edging. There was a large painting on masonite next to our table. The vibe is something I can appreciate. The service was warm, charming, and patient. The server offered recommendations, and told us a little bit about each dish. One of the kitchen staff came out to greet us and see how we felt about our meals. The food. Okay, again, it was just not my thing. For an appetizer we had the stuffed grape leaves--I've eaten these many times in my life. These were as good as any, and one of my favorite things to eat in a Serbian restaurant. We each had something different--one of us had eggplant, another stuffed, peppers, another the goulash, and I had chicken breasts in paprika sauce with a small side of rice. Everything is stuffed with rice. Everything. Everyone seemed to enjoy their food enough. I came in starved, having not eaten anything all day, and it was after 8 when our food came out. I was not a fan of my chicken dish--chicken prepared with the bones in -AND- the skin on (it seemed slimy to me). It was that sliding-off-the-bone slimy, that most people describe as "juicy." The flavor was onion-y and something that my palate processed as sour--and I tasted this all evening. This is not a dis to the restaurant. Day two of my 7-day stretch of trying at least one new-to-me restaurant per day. I actually tried two places on this day, the second being Three Brothers Restaurant. I ordered the cheese and spinach burek, chicken dumpling soup, and apple strudel. The chicken dumpling soup is one giant dumpling in a bowl of chicken stock. Given the lack of salt in the soup, I wouldn't be surprised if they told me it's freshly made stock and not made using bouillon. I appreciate what it is, but I thought it was underwhelming and wouldn't get it again. The cheese and spinach burek was great. I particularly loved the crispiness of the filo dough around the edges. I wouldn't be opposed to getting the cheese and spinach one again, but I'd like to try the beef one next time and see how that one tastes. The apple strudel was fine. The filo dough wasn't very noticeable on half of it for some reason. Maybe it would have been better with custard or maybe not. In general I think it could have used more cinnamon or nutmeg or whatever spices were in it. Like the soup, I probably wouldn't get it again. I ordered a glass of Coke with my meal and finished it fairly quickly. I was asked if I wanted another, which I said yes to. It didn't dawn on me until she was walking away that that probably meant refills were not included, otherwise she would have just refilled it without asking. Knowing that, I was a little more judicious with my second glass. When the bill came, I was shocked to see each glass was $4. At best they were 12 oz glasses, which means $4 for the equivalent of a can of soda. Absolutely not worth it. I wish she had mentioned it would be an additional cost and I wish I had asked. My friend called the week before, made reservations for 6 on a Friday and also pre-ordered the burek - so this only took about 1/2 hour to come out after we were seated. Lots of street parking available. Service was good. Always filling on water. I took photos of everything but I'll only speak to the stuff I tried. Burek - recommend! I love the crispiness of the outside. Goulash - very flavorful. The chicken dumpling - would NOT recommend. With chicken being in the name, it's just the broth, I would've at least expected chicken in the dumpling or pieces in the broth. Very bland. Salad - light and easy appetizer. Someone described it as salsa. Stuffed grape leaves - I expected them to come out warm, they were served cold. Flavorful, nice touch to sample things. The whole experience feels like stepping into a family home -- warm, cozy, and unpretentious, with a kind of old-world charm you don't see much anymore. I haven't been here since the late 80's and nothing has changed (which is a good thing). When you think of grandma's cooking (if she was Serbian) and the comfort you get out of eating it, this is what Three Brothers is like. The simple interior space feels the most European of any place in Milwaukee. What is not simple is how TB is able to pack so much flavor in their dishes. We had all the classics-serbian salad, goulash, meat and cheese burke. sarma, chevapchichi, and roast pork loin. All were phenomenal with the roast pork being the standout. Solid offering of beers, cocktails, and wine. Service was top notch with water glasses always filled and plates quickly removed from the table. I will not be waiting another 36 years to visit. We waited about 45 minutes for the dish, which was fine with us. While waiting , we had the chicken dumpling soup , which was the most disappointing item we had. Just broth and not much flavor. The Serbian salad was definitely the better choice, however it is quite small for the $10.50 price tag. The burek, chicken paprika, and goulash were all excellent. First off, this is a Cash or Check bar. So know that coming in. I love the interior decor bc it fits in very well with Bay View. The food was fairly well priced for home cooked meals but again without using credit card it can be challenging for groups of people to split checks. When I saw the Ćevapčići on the menu I knew I had to get it. Had it at a Serbian church event. We didn't have much room between our neighboring tables as space was pretty tight. The wait staff was friendly but was also rushing around pretty quickly, and we wish we had gotten some more time with our waiter. We ordered a beef burek when we made a reservation and it came out piping hot once we were seated. The portion size is massive, and it did not disappoint. FINALLY got to visit @threebrothersmke tonight! It's been on our list for years - I don't know why we waited so long! We called ahead and pre-ordered the spinach burek - it takes 45-60 minutes to bake, so order ahead or plan accordingly. It was delicious - you definitely need to try it. We started with the Serbian salad - so simple, snd so good! It was perfectly dressed and seasoned. Don't skip it - it was one of our favorite dishes of the night! We shared the Branko Special so we could try a stuffed pepper (our favorite entree - the tomato sauce with it is amazing) and a piece of sarma (pickled cabbage leaves stuffed with beef and rice). We also tried the chicken paprikash - super tender, and the sweet paprika sauce was so tasty. The cherry strudel with custard was the PERFECT ending to a fantastic meal. The cinnamony, slightly spicy aroma of the cherry filling greets you as the warm strudel is brought to the table, and the melty, rich custard is the perfect complement. We ate every. single. bite. In a former Schlitz tied house, the restaurant maintains much of its original decor and all of the charm. Portraits of the first generation owners hang on the walls, and decades later a third generation can be found in the kitchen and working. We ordered takeouts from Three Brothers during the height of the pandemic and found them very tasty. The two dishes that we particularly liked were Stuffed Zucchini and Beef Burek. Five of us recently dined inside the restaurant and ordered a bunch of dishes to share. - Spinach and Cheese Burek was a dish that every one of us enjoyed. The cheese inside the pastry must be well fermented and of very high quality, because it did not cause me any problem even though I'm lactose intolerant. - Stuffed Zucchini was another dish everyone praised. I particularly liked the tomato-based sauce. - Chicken Paprikash was one of my personal favorites. The chicken was tender and flavorful, and the sweet paprika further enhanced its flavor. - Sarma was another one of my personal favorites, because the slight sourness of the pickled cabbage leaves gave the beef and rice fillings a more balanced flavor profile in my view. - Grap Leaves was good but did not stand out in my view. - The combination of 1/2 Chevapchichi and 1/2 Raznjici was quite interesting. One of us really loved the flavor of the beef sausage in Chevapchichi, but the pork Shish-Kabob in the Raznjici was not as flavorful. We also share three desserts. - Grandma's Torte was rich and flavorful, and everyone loved it. - Baklava was clearly made of fresh and high-quality ingredients. I've heard of Three Brothers from best Milwaukee restaurants lists. Recently I saw the judges on Top Chef went there not once, but twice in the short time they were in Milwaukee. We got a reservation at 6pm for a Thursday. You have to call. And you probably do need a reservation Thursday plus weekends. Unlike traditional restaurants they aren't in a rush to turn tables and probably only have space for 30 customers at a time. Immediately entering they went back and checked the reservation and sat us. It's probably good they don't have a host stand; it would take up too much space. They asked if we had been there before and said one or two items take 60 minutes, the rest 40, and they were out of one thing. We got the Burek because that takes 60 minutes and then could take time to decide on other items. The appetizer of grape leaves had an interesting cheese, olives, and grape leaves almost with a rice meets ricotta texture plus lemon flavor. It was probably good I just hadn't had that flavor and wasn't sure. Probably not for picky eaters. We got the Branko's Special to try the Stuffed Pepper and Sarma (one piece of each plus potato dumplings). The sarma was again not for picky eaters. It was good but a citrusy version of pickling cabbage. It wasn't like pickling onions but like a mild citrus sauerkraut. The red pepper was what I wish mine tasted like when I cooked it. It wasn't "leathery" like mine. It wasn't too soft or too hard. It was perfect. The flavor was much more flavor kinda beef red meat sauce. The potatoes dumplings were thiccc. I enjoyed them but they were so big for the thickness. My favorite was the burek. We got the spinach and cheese. I don't know if you've ever gotten a spinach torte from a bakery or coffee shop and it's okay or maybe tasted frozen or microwaved but this Burek was what I wanted all of those to taste like. A spinach pie or tarts isn't even a good I would except to like much but if will make a spinach fan out of you. They did play this same song that sounded like Cinderella conversing with birds. They might just play a single CD. Several different wait staff asked us how we were doing and if we needed anything. Their staff : customer ratio is much higher than most places these days. Dined here on a Sunday at 4:00PM upon opening. We had a large group(12 people) and a reservation so the table was set upon arrival. Our waitress Emily was a delight and helpful in describing dishes I was not familiar with. I opted for the stuffed peppers which were great! My fiancé had the cheese and spinach burek, which takes about an hour to make so put your order in upon arrival! If you're sharing the burek, they will slice it for you, which was great. I also enjoyed a Serbian coffee pre-dinner which was delicious! They didn't have regular coffee at the time, so I was up for the adventure! It arrived in a small espresso style mug. I asked for some cream and stirred it in. It was sooo good! The coffee grounds settle to the bottom of the cup, which didn't bother me, as it gave me the perfect pick me up I needed. Three Brothers Restaurant was our #1 food destination in Milwaukee on our recent trip, specifically for the burek. We decided to order ahead for takeout since we had heard from other reviewers about how everything in the restaurant is made fresh, meaning that dishes can take a long time before coming out. The restaurant opens at 4 or 5PM, depending on the day, but you can call before they open to schedule an order. We called at 4:30PM and were quoted a 1 hour wait for the food. The restaurant itself is located right on the side of a residential area and could easily be mistaken as a house. The interior is quite small, seating only thirty customers or so. This was a Friday afternoon and the place wasn't too crowded at the time. I think they could have accommodated walk ins, but as other reviews state, it's probably better to make a reservation. Pick up was quick and easy. As soon as we received we received the burek, we walked back to the car and immediately dug in to eat it as fresh as possible. I wish there were some benches or something outside the restaurant to make things easier! Burek, Spinach & Cheese ($26.50) - This burek is money. I've had Bosnian and Turkish Burek several times before, but this was the first time having the Serbian variety. The burek is served piping hot and fresh from the oven. We cut into it with a plastic knife and it actually started softening and bending since the pastry was so hot. The phyllo is extremely crispy - while cutting through the layers, pieces were shattering off everywhere all over the car. The layers are thinner than paper-thin, also translucent, so delicate but oh so crisp. Even the phyllo on the bottom of the metal tin retains a bit of the crisp. The interior is layered, with a, egg, spinach, cheese mixture interspersed with more tender, chewier, and soft phyllo. The spinach is cooked until all the astringency is gone, the cheese is mild and milky, and the egg helps add tenderness and bind everything together. Even though there is a good amount of spinach included, the dish isn't soggy. There is quite a bit of black pepper sprinkled in the mixture, adding a pleasing peppery element. The burek is gigantic - it completely fills a 9 inch pie tin. Between two people, we only ate a bit over half of the burek and were completely stuffed (although we weren't too hungry to begin with). While we wanted to try more food from Three Brothers, we knew going in that the Burek would be more than enough for the both of us. (5/5) A couple of days later, I ordered a burek from a place in Chicago. All I can say is Three Brothers has by far the superior burek. The other pie was greasy, floppy, and bland in comparison. My husband in I were in Milwaukee for a short weekend stay and we ordered takeout from Three Brothers for dinner. Most of the dishes we ordered were knockouts. Our favorites were the Spinach and Cheese Burek, the Flourless Chocolate cake and Serbian Chevapchichi. As I picked up our meals to go, you can tell this place is popular. Pretty much every seat in the house was occupied. After our satisfying meal, we still had plenty left over. Thankfully we brought a cooler and the food kept well even days after our visit. A truly special first visit to Three Brothers was enhanced by some great tips from previous Yelpers! Definitely make a reservation if possible as it is a small one room restaurant that was formerly a Schlitz beer tied house. They make great use of the space and there are several nods to Schlitz and that history both inside and out. I made the reservation a week in advance and pre-ordered a burek as they are made to order and take about 45 minutes. The advance order allowed us to dig into the flaky cheese and spinach delight just 15 minutes after being seated, and noting we were a party of three it came sliced into six pieces. This was a first for each of us and we agreed an absolute re-order for future visits. Their burek is also available as either beef or cheese filled in addition to the cheese and spinach we selected. Next was the Serbian salad which appears simple, yet I'm still thinking about it days later! A beautiful balance of tomatoes, peppers and onions with a creamy mild cheese, it is another must. I might just ask for two pounds of Serbian salad on my next visit, it was so tasty and refreshing. We opted for the split order of Chevapchichi and Raznjici which was allowed us to try two key dishes, both excellent. The schnitzel and goulash were flavorful and good choices as well. I must make note of our server Tanya, who was amazing. She knew it was our first visit and was sincerely excited for us to try each dish and sought our feedback as if she made them for us in her own kitchen. This is not bean sprout cooking, and now that I live on the west coast, the delicacies emerging from the Three Brothers kitchen would be considered politically incorrect and a faux pas. This health food contingent would be missing out on some amazing comfort foods, but comfort and warmth are not integral to the west coast, and I was happy to devour every morsel. The layers of the filo dough were flaky and buttery and the texture was airy and it would dissolve in your mouth. The meat was heavy. I would try the spinach and cheese next time since that is more popular. Our friend is lactose so we could only order the meat kind. We had their stuffed pepper (filled with meat and rice) and it was okay. Their sarma (stuffed cabbage w/ beef and rice) was absolutely delicous! The broth was healing and so flavorful. It came with potato dumplings which was good with the broth since it soaked it up. Their goulash was very flavorful and it is more on the heavy side since it's straight up beef with sauce. The taste reminded me of a Korean dish called galbi-jjim. The goulash pairs really well with their red wine. For dessert, we got the honey 10-layer cake (seasonal) and it was amazing! The slice is very thin, but it's so rich with every little bite and you can see all the layers! Next time I want to try their grandma torte which is similar but it has fruit instead. We left the place feeling stuffed and very full. The restaurant and decor has a very homey feel like you're walking into someone's kitchen at home and sitting at a dining table eating the most amazing homemade Serbian food ever. Our waitress was so nice (forgot her name since I'm writing this review 2 months later) and there is free street parking in the area. Came in from out of state and I had to try this place. I was solo and did a walk in. Honestly I was so lucky they allowed me to take a seat. The place got filled to the brim during the time i was there. I was very impressed with the amount of strategic planning and coordination that I witnessed here. The dishes are made fresh and some take a while plus you need a 2 hour reservation slot. They plan down to the minute and how to bring out the food. When it comes to the food... I was blown away. The coffee was very delicious and had the kick I needed. The serbian salad took me by surprise. It cone to you in just a simple array of vegetables and cheese but the bite into it was nearly euphoric. The cheese just melt immediately when you take a bite out of it. For the main meal I had the spinach burak that was recommended to me by several, it was a great choice. It come out freshly cooked and it is packed. I cut it in four pieces and ate two which had me full. The burak was so good I kept eating more just to get a taste. Friends took me to Three Brothers restaurant for a birthday dinner. Been a year or so since I've visited, but not much has changed in the interim. Still an old world small dining room stuffed with Formica tables and wobbly bentwood chairs that leaves little room for patrons to maneuver from door to table but then you're there for the food not the ambience. Being a small room it is a bit noisy but probably no noisier than any other restaurant today. The room was filled when we arrived a bit early but were seated just a few minutes passed our reservation time. Service was relatively quick and friendly, our water glasses were quickly refilled throughout our meal. After placing our order we received a small basket of rye bread and some room temperature butter. We did have a bit of a wait (30 minutes) for our meal since two items had long cooking/preparation time. Didn't mind that, it just meant we were getting really freshly prepared meals. My friends ordered the cheese spinach burek and the roast duck. Both expressed their satisfaction with their meal. I had the goulash, one of my favorite old world dishes. While the dish was good, I did think it had lost some of its flavor and quality. As a stew the meat should be fork tender and tonight it was not, also the spicing was much milder than in past visits. It was served with two small dumplings, again a smaller serving than what I've experienced before. We did have two desserts, cherry strudel and baklava. While good, very small servings for the price. Overall pricing was in line with what you would expect to find in similar establishments, ranging from $22-35 for our meals. So all in all I'd say Three Brothers is a good place to eat, but maybe not as good as it once was. A tough call from a single visit, but I'd have no problem going back again or recommending it to others. read more

Once you enter this establishment, it does feel like you've walked into an old world Slavic setting. I forget the name, but we went with the dish that takes about an hour to cook, spinach and onion type pie with Filo dough. It reminded me of spanakopita, but much denser, creamy and savory. I have to give a shout out to our waitress, Kathy, who made us feel very welcome and seemed like she had been there for 30 years even though it was her third week.She's very warm and maternal. The historic building and interior makes it worthwhile to visit without considering the food. I tend to not eat dense food, and the dishes here are quite dense. Still, very tasty. The only reason I am taking off star is because they don't accept payment other than cash or check. I can understand not having credit cards because of the fees they have to pay, but they could accept credit cards and charge the customer at 3% user fee or use Venmo or something to accept payment. This was my first meal and introduction to traditional Serbian cuisine in Milwaukee (2/16/20). Clearly well established and favored for Sunday dinner. It had Old World charm in a historical Schlitz building. Its warmth was welcomed from the snowy outdoors and smelled amazing. It has been hours since I last ate in Seattle. Stomach was clamoring, feed me! I perused the menu, letting my MKE host interject with suggestions, as well as additional culinary detail from our lovely wait person. She just visited the PacNW, so she was ever so gracious to introduce me to this family run restaurant, Three Brothers. Everything was prepared simply but so amazing. Each dish, each course was clearly made with such care and pride. Mmmmm. It was an amazing meal, especially after my flight from Seattle. Three Brothers is a Milwaukee institution. I hadn't been there in probably 15 years before my visit last night. I will tell you, NOTHING has changed. I was so thankful! It is still the same cozy restaurant that makes you feel like you're having Sunday supper at Grandma's house. We had spinach and cheese burek and sarma, along with cherry strudel for dessert. Everything came with generous portions and was delicious. The service was absolutely on point as well - shoutout to Diana, who was so sweet and made us feel very well cared for! When I saw Three Brothers on Yelp, I knew we had to go when we visited Milwaukee over Labor Day weekend. And I loved it. It's one of the most charming restaurants I've been to lately. In an age when hipster white subway tiled restaurants are taking over, Three Brothers had a thousand times as much as charm with about 1/100 of the effort. It's a small restaurant. Dimly light (our table was lit by an old Schlitz lamp). Tables were happily talking but the restaurant wasn't loud. The restaurant has Old World furniture, a mirror-backed bar, and understated yet sophisticated decor. Basically, it was one of the homiest restaurants I've been to in ages. Then the food. The Serbian salad was simple and tasty. The goulash was fantastic: tender meat, salty caramelized onions, and light/fluffy dumplings. We also shared the crepes for dessert (with chocolate hazelnut filling), which were lovely as well. We shared a half carafe of wine, and I also enjoyed a shot of slivovitz. We started with the spinach and cheese burek (we called ahead to let them know we wanted one; otherwise it's an hour wait for one to cook). The burek was the only thing we ate that night that I didn't love. The burek has layers of filo dough inside. I don't care if you cook that burek for 2 hours - those interior layers of filo dough will never cook or get crisp! The cheese in the burek didn't have a lot of flavor, and there wasn't very much spinach. So, ultimately (to me), the burek mostly tasted of uncooked filo dough. But I loved every other bite we had at Three Brothers. The service was wonderful as well. They don't take reservations online, but you can call and make a reservation. We made our reservation about two weeks out (for Saturday night of Labor Day weekend). We also let them know we wanted a burek when we made the reservation. I'm glad we made a reservation! When we walked in (a couple of minutes early), our table wasn't quite ready, but they had it ready within a couple of minutes! But there weren't empty tables! Three Brothers is popular. And it was full. I'm not sure if we could have gotten in that night without the reservation! It's tiny and there aren't that many tables! This was a lovely meal. The food was great. The atmosphere was lovely. The service was great. It also wasn't a very expensive meal! If I lived in Milwaukee, I'd be here all the time. It was my first time eating at a Serbian restaurant, and based on my experience at Three Brothers, I'd love to eat at a Serbian restaurant again soon. read more

I thought this was a great spot for something exotic and different! I really enjoyed the traditional Serbian cuisine offered here...these are the items we tried: -Burek (spinach and cheese) -Stuffed Grape Leaves -Serbian Salad -Goulash The burek was a flavorful and filling pastry. The stuffed grape leaves tasted fresh and bright. Our third item was the salad, which was full of different delicate flavors and textures. Lastly, we had the goulash, which was rich and savory...the beef chunks were tender and perfectly cooked. The service was friendly and attentive. I adore everything about this place, from the lovely vintage building to the excellent service to the stellar food. I also love the European-style emphasis on encouraging guests to take their time and savor the meal. The vibe is no frills, homey and very inviting. Our server was absolutely charming, welcoming and helpful without being overbearing. Her suggestions were awesome and her energy made the experience even more delightful. The Serbian h'ors d'oeuvres appetizer was simple but tasty, a great starter to pair with the complimentary bread. The Serbian Salad was equally simple but effective, with a tangy dressing and lots of briny, yummy white cheese. The Burek was worth the 45-minute wait, flavorful, filling, and delightfully flaky. Chevapchichi and Raznjici were juicy and perfectly seasoned, and the raw onions were unexpectedly sweet and not as intense as I've had at other Serbian restaurants (a huge bonus, IMO!) One thing to be aware of is the bathrooms are quite narrow, but they too are charming in a quirky miniature way. So glad to see family-owned local institutions with such rich histories thriving and excelling. Can't wait to go back and try more of their specialties! read more
