WOW, what a challenge! I'm a warrior, but I didn't make it to the falls. The drive to the trailhead was incredible. We drove through the Inaja and Cosmit Indian reservation on a dirt road. We started the hike at the top of a mountain. Be sure to have appropriate footwear and lots of water. Start early so the heat doesn't beat you down (like it did me). If you are not in shape and are not an experienced hiker, I highly recommend you DO NOT attempt this trail. It's two miles to the falls. The hike down was much easier than the hike back;) I made it about halfway and fell on my arm. I'm fine, but received a nasty trail burn. At that point, I told my niece I'd gone far enough. The hike back up the mountain was brutal. I was hot and could feel the pulse in my neck lol. I had to stop several times to give my legs a break. And keep in mind the high elevation. I live in Florida, and hike on flat land. My body was not prepared to be 1,000's of feet above sea level. With all the challenges, it was a beautiful place! I still got to see and hear the falls before turning back. I would go back for the scenic drive and would hike about a half mile of the trail only.
If you have this hike on your list of trails to do make sure you come around a time of the year when there was recent rainfall. I came during the fall of 2021 and So Cal hadn't really had any real rainfall since December of 2020 so when we made it to the bottom of the trail the falls were dried up. Besides that the trail itself is nice, some good views, there's maybe 1/4 of a mile that actually has shade. The trail goes down to the water fall so coming back up there will be a decent amount of elevation, make sure you have a hat and sunglasses to keep you covered from the sun. Even in the fall it can get up to 80° out there. GPS direction should lead you right to the start of the trail, just know that the last 6 miles of the road is not a paved road. We were able to get to the trail in a low clearance vehicle, we also saw a few Honda Civics in the parking lot so low clearance cars can make it there, but you'll be driving about 12 mph all the way there.
Tagged along with a couple friends on a hike to the falls. Have heard a lot about this hike since moving to SD and wanted to check it out. Took about an hour to drive north east to get to the trail head but totally worth it. Beautiful views!! Would say not an easy hike but more intermediate difficulty level. 1) starts with a good hike down instead of up 2) if you're afraid of heights, this one isn't for you lol. Would recommend going early, seemed to be a popular hike (especially if you want some good pics). Roughly a 2 mile hike each way. Great way to start a weekend morning!
This is a great hike for exercise, scenery, and water fun! This is definitely a difficult hike on the way out. It's about 2 miles in, then 2 miles out. Know your abilities. If you can not handle the hike out don't over excerpt yourself at the falls. There are lots of opportunities for swimming, cliff jumping and climbing, when the water levels are high enough. Today was a great day. The weather was 50-60F throughout the day with full sun. This made for a comfortable hike. 1-2L of water was just enough. The water was flowing pretty well. It was enough to use the slide, although a bit bumpy on the your buttoximus maximus muscles. The water was freezing but the sun on the rocks was enough to warm you up. People were doing some cliff dives into the second pool of water below the first fall. The hike out was an butt kicker as always. So many people looking like they about to die. If the weather, is anywhere above 70F, you'll need at least 2L of water. If above 80F, you'll need 3L. The is no shade. The trail absorbs and reflects heat from the sun. You feel heat coming from the sun above, and the dirt below. You're being cooked from both directions and you have to hike a steep trail out. Unless you hike out at 9pm, it's going to be hot. Make sure you have enough water. As long as you have enough water, this is a great spot to check out and have a swim. I recommend bringing a pair of water shoes. The rocks can get slippery when wet.
The road into this hike is a dirt road - drive slow and take your time. I drive a Kia Sportage and didn't have any issues coming in or out of the windy dirt road. This is a really cute hike to do on a day you want to be outdoors and enjoy the day. The hike down isn't too bad but be weary of the poison oak hiding amongst the trails. The falls themselves are gorgeous- I've done this hike in the summer and it was very hot with not as much water to see coming down from the falls. To get to the top falls you do have to walk on some steep uphill rocks. Be sure to wear shoes with good traction! There are lots of places here to sit and enjoy a snack or just relax and take in the views. The hike back up is roughly a 950ft elevation gain! The trail is relatively smooth but be sure to have some water with you and take breaks as needed. There isn't much shade on the way back up either so be weary of that. Enjoy!
Driving there is an adventure. The last 7 or so miles is a dirt path. I highly recommend having a car with higher clearance when getting to this hike. Otherwise, you'd be driving super slow and watch Jeeps pass you. Parking lot has a decent amount of bumps and dips and was full on Saturday at 10am. ***Considering COVID and all, I was really disappointed by the amount of people not wearing masks. The trail is pretty narrow and there's people coming down and up at the same time. It made me feel uncomfortable so make sure to come at a less busy time or skip this trail.*** The hike itself is a dirt path with a lot of rocks and boulders. I highly recommend wearing hiking shoes. The hike down to the waterfall is relatively easy as it's all downhill. It took us longer to get down as it got slippery from the loose dirt and rocks. The way back is easier than coming down as the uphill is gradual and you don't have to worry about slipping. The waterfall was nice and relaxing!
Tough hike on a hot day. Driving to the parking lot is an experience in and of itself, expecially when heading down from the north. My Waze GPS sent us down a long poorly maintained road deep into Romona and we were eventually blocked by an Indian reservation fence. Anyway, you should be closer to Julian before taking side roads (pine hills rd). Once you get on the right road you'll then drive a long winding road, some paved, but mostly a dirt road until you get to the parking lot.. Parking on a weekend will be tough, but you will find parking eventually. The hike.. the trek down to the falls is easy. It's outright brutal getting back up to the parking lot. There isn't much shade. There's a reason why there are so many rescues during the summer months. Late winter/ spring is the best time to go for mild temperatures and more water. For those adventurous types you can hike your way to the top of the waterfalls via a climbing rope system. It's still risky, but fun. - Bring a hat and lots of water. - Some people bring boogie boards and such during high water flow.. - This is a bit much for families with small kids. Rest assured that you'll be carrying your little one on your back up the long road up to the car.. - if you're able to hike to potato chip rock then you're ready for this..
I would say that this is a moderate hike with some fun climbing at the end. The hardest part was definitely the long drive to get there! I'm not a fan of driving down narrow windy dirt roads. But I guess relaxing at the serene waterfall was worth it. It was so peaceful and beautiful there! I also really liked climbing all the rocks there and using the ropes to get to the top. So much fun! Tips: Wear hiking shoes with good grip! The rocks are extremely slippery when wet! I almost fell a few times! Bring at least 3 water bottles per person. Snacks are a good idea as well. A picnic by the falls would be very nice!
Ok so this hike seems easy...only a few miles...but this will kick your ass coming back. The steepness coming back up piled with the fact that there is no shade can really creep on you so make sure to take your time. That being said the falls themselves are spectacular. Plenty of space to sit relax and eat your hike snacks. There are three different falls (hence the name) the top one requires a nice climb but the views are amazing once you get there. The lower fall is great for sliding so make sure to bring your water shoes. Parking can be scarce so come early.
This is a great endurance trail. Waterfalls were flowing and the water felt so good after all the sun and dust exposure. Unless u do this hike in winter or on a cool day I do not recommend bringing your dog. I saw two dogs get injured by the waterfall as their foot pads couldn't grip on the sleet rock. It was extremely hot 85 degrees and dogs looked miserable coming back up. Wear sunscreen and bring lots of water. I had two Liters and used it all on the trail.
Been wanting to try this hike for a while but three things worried me: (1) avoid the weekend/holiday crowds as the parking can get full as many have warned; (2) will there be much water flowing; and (3) the heat. So, we ventured out today on Friday Feb 12 and we met (1) and (3) easily however rain was in the forecast so we weren't sure what to expect. Well we were fortunate and arrived at around 1:30pm and the rain had just stopped so we had a nice cool slightly chilly hike in the 40s (dress in layers this time of year). The hike was as advertised, downhill on the way out but not straight down, there are some nice flat stretches and some cool vantage points of Oak trees and you see the falls out in the distance most of the way providing reassurance you are on the right track. There is a nice guidepost near the top that points you correctly to the left trails as well as reassuring ribbons in some bushes letting you know to keep going. When arriving at the falls you can take some nice photos and we walked around mostly near the bottom and towards the bottom of the middle falls but didn't risk slipping any further as the rocks were still moist from earlier rain. The hike is as advertised 2.2 miles each way (4.4 total) and it took us a little over 2 hours and we weren't rushing or hustling at all. I definitely recommend this hike but do pay attention to the 3 worries I had as I wouldn't want someone to drive all the way out and not be able to park. Also - carry your poop bags away. There were way too many along the path just tossed and a huge pileup at the trail head. That's gross and irresponsible.
I hiked this hike a few times many years ago when the original trail that consist some rope climbing was the only way down. While it was fun and exciting to hike the original trail it was also a little dangerous for new hikers and unexperienced one. I just hiked three sister fall again yesterday and the new trail was so much better than the old one because the trail is safe for all level of hikers and the view is a little better during the hike compared to the old trail. Here are some tips going here! 1. Bring lots of water because this trail can get hot! due to not having too much shade. 2. Bring food so you can enjoy it while dipping your toe in the waterfall. 3. Have sunscreen, hat, or long sleeve pant and shirt if you are planning to go on a sunny day. 4. After the hike stop by mom's pie or Julian pie company to get yourself some pie and food haha since it is about 30-40mins drive from the hike. 5. PLEASE CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF!
This review is for Three Sisters Falls Trail which was a ~4.1 miles round trip that took ~2.5 hours to complete. Trail was narrow for the most part and rocky as you get closer to the waterfall. Steady decline to the waterfall and incline back to the parking lot. Waterfall had a ton of water due to the recent rain! Required to drive ~5.7 miles on dirt road to parking lot. This was a great hike with excellent views. The park is off the beaten path. You'll have to drive down some dirt roads and parking lot is not paved. If you're going to hike down to the falls ensure you bring plenty of water. read more

We did this hike for the first time on 3/24/18 on the new route. Location- it took quite a while to get there even though we spent the night with family who live in El Cajon instead of coming from where we live which is near Long Beach...it still took a bit over an hour to go 40 miles since the last 10 miles or so to the trailhead is on a winding dirt road that will rattle your car even at low speeds so that last 10 miles probably takes about 25-30 mins. Parking- we arrived early (about 6 am) so the parking lot was empty however when we left the lot was overflowing Trail there- I never did the old trail, but the first 1.5 miles are still the same and at about the 1.5 mile mark you can see the steep descent of the old trail going down to the creek and you can see the waterfalls in the distance; so the new safer trail takes you to the left and it is a relatively easy trek to the falls; as you get closer the trail becomes less defined and you need to look out for little blue ribbons on the brush indicating the path to stay one; we arrived to the falls in a little over an hour it was a relatively easy 2.2 miles The falls- the rock areas by the falls are very slippery and there is no easy way to get to the upper falls so be ready for some scrambling and treacherous conditions to explore all 3 falls; it was too early and cold for us to get in the water...bummer Trail back- the trail there is mostly flat or downhill so the way back is much harder obviously and we found the first half a mile back harder to see and follow the trail back and had to do some backtracking to find the trail since we somehow started going to low and close to the creek; I can see how people have a hard time with this relatively short RT hike of about 4.5 miles during warmer months, or after expending energy playing in the water, or drinking alcohol. read more

Depending on how often you exercise will obviously affect your experience in difficulty, personally this was super easy and the views are amazing. I highly recommend going early i got here at 6:20ish and there was only 1 other group far ahead, by the time i was done it started getting packed and the heat was starting to hit. Got the water fall to ourselves basically, highly recommended and advise to go as early as possible. NO RESTROOM bring water and a jacket if your going early! read more

This is a long overdue review. Maybe because I'm still recovering from this hike. LOL jk I've purposely postponed it. Probably the most challenging hike I've done in a while. Colorado's 'Pikes Peak' will forever top my most challenging hike mainly because I seriously thought I was going to freeze to death and die on the mountain top. 'Three Sisters Falls' is a mentally and physically challenging hike. This hike ain't no joke so come PREPARED ! Approximately 4 miles out and back. Time depends on your fitness level. If it weren't for my friends I would have turned around halfway through. We probably took a few detours hiking this trail searching for the waterfalls, but we eventually did. Expect to go through some narrow trails and major steep and rugged inclines and declines. The inclines were KILLER ! There will be ropes set-up as you descend and ascend the trails. Just make sure they are in good condition. We didn't have a problem. Also expect some mountain climb BOULDERING ! YEP you heard me...so get those hiking boots with good grips on and be prepared to use your muscles ! I suggest carrying water bottles, energy snacks, gripping gloves for the ropes/bouldering, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, and going on an early cool day ! Avoid the summer months ! We didn't and damn we paid for it ! Unfortunately, we are suffering from a drought and by the time we hit the falls, it was completely dried up ! Boo ! Might have to come back when we get a bit more rain. The views are BREATHTAKING at high elevation and worth the blood, sweat, and tears you may endure. Watch out for poison ivy/oak, steep rocks, sketchy roads, slippery rocks, and loose gravel/sand while you mountain climb back to the start of the trail. In this case, I crawled myself up this mountain. Yeah I literally felt so out of shape by this time. With the added heat, I was mentally and physically tested ! Please don't bring children and dogs. It's not worth it if something goes wrong. Also, pick up your trash and keep these hikes beautifully maintained for all. LET'S BE RESPONSIBLE AND COURTEOUS ! Challenging yet rewarding hike !!! Knowing more of what I know now, I'll be back with a vengeance ! read more
One of the Three sisters kicked my a$$, and I loved it! My friend and I were up for an adventure and someone recommended a hike at Three Sisters Falls. In preparation, I read at least a dozen Yelp reviews. The three most frequently used phrases were "Poison Oak", "Hardest Hike" and "Experienced Hiker". I knew it was not going to be a cake walk, but I never imagined how intense this hike would be. We arrived at noon armed with a backpack full of water bottles and snacks, wearing hiking boots, long pants and even gloves. After a quick jog from the parking area, we started descending a long rocky hill that kept going and going. I had one of those moments where you realize that the return trip would be brutal. I consider myself a fairly strong athlete and this was a great opportunity to push my limits. A shady tree at the bottom offered us a perfect place to enjoy avocado sandwiches and pistachio toffee which fueled us for the next challenge. The path consisted of large and small boulders and enough obstacles that we used both our hands and feet to get through it. It took about 1.5 hours to finally reach the base of the falls. Over the years the water had smoothed the rocks. We humbly gazed up at a giant granite slab that was both tempting and threatening us. We thanked the anonymous saint who tied ropes up that enabled us to reach a perch on the face of the waterfall. And then things got real. I laid face first with my body plastered to the granite trying to stretch my legs far enough to reach a teeny edge on the smooth rock. That ridge was the only thing separating me from a death drop straight down to the dry boulders beneath me. My heart skipped a beat as my face went ghostly white and I just froze. My friend said that the psychological challenge was more than the physical challenge and we both agreed that we should be proud to have made it slightly past the lowest fall. It was a gorgeous, hot, dry October afternoon and the hike back was steep and long. This was an adventure to remember and I have new found respect for rock climbers. If you are planning a hike at Three Sisters then believe your Yelp brothers and sisters and come prepared with lots of water, appropriate clothing and a great attitude. The way down to the waterfall was easy but also kinda terrifying considering the pathways were kinda tight. Going back to the car was a different story.... I almost fainted and I couldn't breath. If you got asthma don't do it! It will kick your butt! -Wear sunscreen (SPF100 for the summer) -Take a GALLON of water (yes a gallon. We ran out of water) -Snacks (because snacks, duh) -Water shoes (if you're like me you hate stepping on slimy rocks) -DONT LEAVE YOUR TARSH!!!! -Fill up an empty water bottle with the water from the creek to splash yourself with for your way back up -DONT LEAVE YOUR TRASH!!!! This is my favorite hike I've taken in California. Definitely bring a lot of water and know that there is little shade if any. Once you make it to the bottom you get the prize! The waterfall. A lot lot of people swim in it or lay out and enjoy the beautiful scenery. It's a bit slippery but I find it safe to get in. I won't be one of the folks sliding down any time soon! Walking back up wasn't fun but it's still my favorite hike! You won't forget it!! read more

Three Sisters Falls is no secret in San Diego. The falls are insanely majestic, but they are in no way easy to reach despite the short 2 or so miles it takes to hike out to them. Without question, this hike is INTENSE and is a serious athletic undertaking! It will get the heart racing due to the athletic feats you must complete to get through some of the drops and it could also get scary dangerous (or rather thrilling)! If you don't want to risk injury, only do this hike if you are experienced. Otherwise, I've seen many people on this trail... struggling and rolling down the mountain, but they were there regardless. Some tips: 1) Wear pants! You will be kicking up a ton of dirt in some parts where erosion has unpacked the dirt. You will be on your hands and knees trying to scramble up and down cliffs. 2) Bring grip gloves. You will be climbing. It might also help to grab the ropes that are there to assist you. Personally, I found it best just to free climb. 3) Go early! Boulder Creek Rd is narrow and as soon as cars start parking on the side of the road near the trailhead, the road gets even narrower. 4) Equip yourself with REAL hiking boots! This couldn't be more important since the potential to slide or slip (near the river) is very high. 5) Bring a group of friends- to help you along the way then to congratulate each other at the end! Most importantly, have fun and BE SMART! This is still an unofficial trail; you hike at your own risk. The committee is looking to acquire funding before the end of the year to try and regulate it. I do think a permit system would be wise for this hike because while it is simply beautiful, the amount of people it attracts is a bit outrageous plus trash build-up and destruction is getting out of control. The graffiti was a tad unnerving as well. In the end, it was the most thrilling and gratifying hike I have ever completed, an adventure that everyone should work towards completing. I put it off for way too long because I thought it was just plain scary, but really it wasn't that bad at all. Glad to have finally conquered it! I hope to complete it again and make it to upper falls, because unfortunately we didn't have time. read more

I'm not sure why I said yes on hiking here again the second time. I already punished myself enough and vowed that I won't come back here from the first time. Dude, if I cried hiking potato chip the first time! Three Sisters showed me what's up. I was ballin with tears, pretty much gave up, laid on the ground in a fetal position, and wished that there was UBER that can pick us up. I couldn't move or walk for 1 week. Three sisters is by far the hardest, sketchiest, and MOST AMAZING hike I have ever done. Good thing I came with awesome friends and motivated me to keep going. It is one of those places that you have to do and experience it yourself. Hiking to get down to the waterfall is hard, so enjoy the moment, take lots of pictures, eat, drink, and get ready to climb your way back home! This hike pushed me to my limits and I'm grateful that I made it twice. We made it all the way to the top the first time, cause we felt it was now or never. Second time we just chilled but few friends still went all the way up. Waterfalls was stunning and beautiful. It's worth seeing and getting paralyzed for 1 week. I don't recommend bringing kids here. I recommend strong people that can lift you up. I recommend bringing at least 3 gallons of water. I give much props to people that went swimming and did this trail like it was nothing. The best hike I've done yet!!! It's about 4 miles and some change in total. It isn't that long but... It requires a lot of climbing, crawling, water and courage. If you're afraid of heights, this will be a challenge for you. But the waterfall is soooo worth it. Things you should know: -The road to get there is very sketchy. After a couple of miles, it's just a narrow dirt road with a lot of turns and blind spots (Really scary). Also, make sure your tires can handle the dirt road because it has a lot of potholes. -If you're bringing your pets or children, please keep in mind that there is a lot of climbing involved and certain parts of the hike requires you to use a rope for assistance. (Surprisingly though, I encountered a lot of brave children and dogs that day... kudos to them!) Overall, I really recommend this hike. It was so relaxing and a great work out. I will definitely do it again. I absolutely loved it! read more

Getting there:don't drive a regular car to this location. Have a truck. The roads are terrible. All dirt but also full of pot holes and very uneven. Drive slowly as it's very hard to see, if at all, around the bends. Hiking to the falls is mostly downhill so it's pretty easy. Once you get there it's beautiful. Great place to relax. Bring plenty of water and snacks. We went really early in the morning because it gets very hot and crowded. You can swim in the water too. Hiking back is uphill so it's difficult. Just take time to rest and drink water! Wear sunscreen!! read more
I always have heard of this place. I am game for something new when hiking and this place definitely qualified. I few suggestions before going: Do your research and don't let the four miles fool you Do bring plenty of water Do know that this is an "unofficial" trail Do have good shoes Do know that last portion of the trip is not on paved roads The official "unofficial" trailhead can be accessed via Google maps. Follow the directions (which can be tricky). We were coming from east county already so the trip was slightly over an hour. A word of caution, the last five or six miles is on a graded unpaved road. It is narrow so you or someone will have to pull over for larger vehicles. Once on the trailhead, the parking is on the side of the road. The first section of the hike is pretty straight forward until you have to descend on the steeper sections where you have an option to use a rope that someone had left being. Be careful since you don't know if the rope will be stable enough. So use the rope with caution. We went a few days after it had rained. It was not dusty which was good but be careful since it was a bit slippery going over the rocks. We made it to th falls and you can climb all the way to the top and go for a swim. The trek back is challenging since you have to climb up the same steep sections you came down via the help of ropes. If you are not used to hiking you feel it the following day. I would go again and actually go swimming. I suggest that you do this at least once. read more
This was a good hike... I've never been here but ive heard that the road & hike route have improved. FYI driving to the trail may require you to drive on dirt road for several miles. Parking lot is large and may fit well over 50 or more cars but people cant park... the parking lot is uneven and you may hit the bottom of your car unless you have high clearance vehicle. This is a reverse hike, meaning you will go down first and end up coming back up. But this one you will go back up and come down like a "N" the old trail is closed, where people had ropes to go down but the new trail with gradual slope look safer. The water fall is awesome, it is huge! From the trail you end up in the middle one. There is way up to the first one, but it is not recommended for first time hikers or climbers. *we hit the end of the superbloom but there were so many flowers *I've also notice that people LOVE to pack up their dog poop and leave it in a bag, everywhere... I'm sure you are not that person, but someone(s) is out there doing this... as the himers say you pack everything in and you pack it out. read more

Came here during January, and of course during the government shut down.. haha First off, the road to drive here was not paved at all! I read some reviews that the last 10 miles is a winding dirt road, but I did not expect it to be THAT bad. I don't know if it had to do with the government shutdown, but with the unpaved road, it took about 20-30 minuets to drive through the road with you car rattling the entire way so make sure you have a sturdy car! PARKING - There was BARELY any parking...Literally only 5 spaces. I am sure this was related to the government shutdown because as we were walking from the enter the trailhead, there were a bit more parking space (Maybe enough to fit 10-15 cars?) and porta potties on the side. THE HIKE - The hike itself wasn't too bad at all. You can see the waterfalls on your hike there as well. You start from a downward hike and return upwards. In reviews, I read that it was a treacherous hike, but we came here after a rainfall and it only took us 45 min- 1 hour to reach the first fall. You can even reach the first fall within 30 minutes if you don't stop by to take pictures. The hardest part of the hike was trying to reach to the top of the falls because the rock area was super slippery and there wasn't a simple path to reach to the top of the falls. As for swimming, I wouldn't say these waterfalls are the "best" for swimming because the water was a super murky... I wouldn't say this was the best waterfall hike I've been to, but it was worth visiting! read more

I did this hike back in April when the region was still pretty wet from the rain between January and March. It is by far the most technically challenging trail in the greater SD area. Despite its relatively short length (less than two miles one way), there are a couple of stretches in which you will need to use the guide ropes to help ascend/descend. You are literally doing a bear crawl in loose sand on the way back up. This is definitely a hike that is not for beginners/kids/pets. You really should come prepared with the right gear to tackle this trail (i.e. hiking shoes/boots, gloves, water bottles, sunglasses, sunscreen, hat). The payoff at the end was amazing though as the water was rushing down the three falls from all the winter precipitation. I even slid down the third waterfall on my back as it is a natural rock slide that drains into a small pool. For the more adventurous, there were additional steep climbs to get to the summit of the first waterfall. Watch out for wildlife as snakes were seen along the trail. I would advise to not try this hike during the summer months as the heat will be stifling. The rescue helicopter makes several runs each weekend picking up folks who are stuck and cannot make it back because of dehydration, fatigue, injury, etc. read more
Is this hike worth it? Is probably what you want to know. I'll tell you the truth, if it weren't for my friend I would have quit. Was it worth it in the end? I mean, it's a beautiful view of the waterfalls and you feel like you are in a different state... it's the most rewarding, and you'll definitely feel accomplished but I think it's worth to try it ONCE unless you like to be on the riskier side. The hike is about 4 miles round trip, it took us about 3-4 hours total but we also chilled at the falls for about half an hour. Getting to the falls is easier then getting back. It's all downhill to the falls and you can see it from the top. It looks pretty easy to get to, but that's because you can't see the dirt hill where it's a steep incline, or using some ropes to climb down another steep part...oh don't forget the abundance of poison oak everywhere! If you don't know what it looks like please see all the pictures because trust me you don't want to get it on you and also you may be allergic. It seriously was like playing hot lava trying to avoid the poison oak. Temperature: we came on a cooler day...about mid 70s, so it wasn't too bad, but I must say it was constant sun beating on you. Put on sunblock before the hike and at the waterfalls so you won't burn. There isn't much shade. I can see people getting heat exhaustion on hotter days...I would try to avoid hotter days. Water: I laugh at those people who brings 1 or 2 bottles of water... you must not read reviews. This isn't Cowles mountain. Be prepare people. I would say bring 1.5 liters to be safe. I had a camelback and only drank 1.5 liters, but I also had gatorade and drank about half of that, so total liquid intake would be 2 liters. Snacks: you will be hungry, at least eat a good dinner the night before and a light breakfast. Bring bananas, energy bars, beef jerky and anything to snack on because you'll want to sit and eat it at the falls before heading back up. To get to the top waterfall...hard. Sketchy in some areas... you might have to do the crab walk or be on all fours. It was sketchy to get to the top, I was hesitant and had to sit for 5 minutes to see if I wanted to get injured or not. But be confident in yourself and be safe, Hike back up to your car... this was the tough part because now you are going uphill to get out of the falls... again, trying to avoid poison oak...also the trails are unmarked, so it means you end up wasting time and doing sketchy things like jumping over rocks and walking on the creek... also the dirt hill up was hard because it was a steep incline... no switch backs. You literally have to crawl up or even rock climb some parts. Once you get through the dirt hill you'll be okay. This hike is not a stroll, it's probably the hardest hike in SD that I've been. It's funny because I've been on a 16 mile hike and it wasn't as bad, but 3 sisters you kicked my ass...I made it but I wanted to quit many times. read more

What a great time to do this hike on one of the first warm and sunny weekends after a long, wet winter! It took us about an hour and a half to get there from downtown SD. Parking was easy to find since we got there early-ish (Saturday 9am), but it did look packed when we left around noon. We spent about 3 hours there. It took us an hour to get to the waterfall, then we spent about another hour just hiking down the river, and about another hour to get back. Apparently the hike used to be pretty hard because there was a steep slope you had to climb down using rope, but that is no longer the case! It is now closed off and there is a trail carved out that goes straight to the waterfall. It is now very family and dog friendly. If you want a bit more of a challenge, once you get to the waterfall you can climb down along the river (follow the arrows on the rocks) which will eventually take you to where the old slope I mentioned above ends. This was a beautiful and fun hike especially during the Spring (the waterfall may be dry other seasons). read more

Very easy hike, only difficult parts were the altitude change and getting around on the rocks when you're feet are wet. Only drank water on the way out. Could have done this hike in middle school with no problem!! Beautiful water falls but I was expecting what I consider a more difficult/strenuous hike (10-15 miles). read more
Beautiful hike. I recommend having suv or truck in order to get to trailhead. However, we made it with our VW Passat but I wish I would have borrowed or rented suv or truck. If you aren't careful, you can do some damage. We went in March and there was no problem finding parking when we arrived at around 9 am. The first half of hike is no problem. It's all downhill. Once we arrived at the falls. We stayed for about 45-60 minutes just enjoying the sounds and view. On the return trip, the first part is steep incline that will give you great workout. I can see why people get evacuated from heat exhaustion/stroke/dehydration during the summer. I recommend a good pair of hiking boots. I do not recommend running shoes. Trail shoes might work. Overall, I would do this hike again in heart beat. read more
The answer you all want to know: Yes there is water right now! This hike is very challenging, but rewarding at the end. Plan for about 4 hours round trip. The trek down isn't so bad because it's all downhill. Coming back is all uphill and there are no switchbacks so it's pretty much straight up in a lot of places. The hike might not be too physically challenging but there are areas that you look at and wonder to yourself how you will get down this completely vertical path while sliding and next to the edge of a big cliff. If you are afraid of heights you may want to think twice about hiking down the waterfalls. Tips: Bring a lot of water, this is not a joke! Watch out for the poison oak in the "forresty" area. Be ready to drive the 10 mile dirt road. Make sure you don't get lost on the trail. Two of my girlfriends went the wrong way from the start, never found the waterfalls, and ran out of water. When you see the rail at the very beginning, go straight over it and down the pathway. You will then eventually hear and see the falls to your left. There will be a post with and arrow pointing left for three sisters. Who would have thought that in the middle of the desert there would be such beautiful waterfalls. I cant wait until I can find someone else to drag with me to do this hike again! read more

Likely lots of people late morning and afternoon. Would recommend early morning hikes (6-9am starts) to avoid a ton of people and photo-ops.
Do you need a permit to hike at 3 sisters waterfall trail?
No you don't. But get there early on the weekend because the parking lot fills early. You can get a ticket if you park on the main road (no parking signs).

The hike is like 80% climbing down into a canyon and back out on a steep, sandy, rocky hill. 10% is climbing up over rocks to get to the different pools of the falls (if you want to) and the other 10% is a beautiful walk...… Read more

Yes. There is no offroading. You park on the side of the road on Boulder Creek Road right in front of the trailhead. There is a large sign at the beginning of it.
