Clissold Wines is a friendly family-run store which has an excellent selection of low-mid price wines, spirits and beers. They always run a few cheap offers in big wooden crates next to the door- I went in last night and they had 3 different 3 for 10 pound white wine offers. As well as inexpensive offerings, they also have an excellent range of riojas and sancerres from about 12 pounds upwards. The staff are friendly and helpful and have two beautiful cats who sit behind the till.

Church street can get a it carried away with its prices sometimes, and Clissold keeps it down to earth.

My expectation was that I'd make a quick visit (on my list for ages), leave with a few interesting bottles of wine and be very happy to drink them at home with friends over dinner. And my expectations were FAR surpassed. WHOA, this place is excellent! I had about 20 minutes so I grabbed my pup for a walk with PV as my destination. The moment I walked in the door Luca (owner) popped up from the office all smiles (and smartly dressed in a gorgeous pink jumper!), greeted me (and my dog!) warmly and asked me what he could help with. I had vague instructions from my husband for a "mineraly" white, a "floral" white and then some bottles of red. I shared this information with Luca -- and he went to work. I could almost hear the gears turning in his brain as he readied the recommendations! He asked me price point (most bottles fall in the £15-30 range), and then began selecting some the thought would be good choices. Not only did he select them, but gave me an entire backstory on each one, the process in which they were made, the region of Italy, right down to the idiosyncrasies of the winemaker. I had no idea I'd be getting such a robust education, my only regret is that I didn't have more time to be regaled with the history of each! I settled on 5 bottles to bring back, and they were carefully wrapped in paper and placed in very nice canvas totes. This smart operation also does wine tastings and small plates (by reservation only) in their secret basement. Luca gave me the full tour, and of course -- that's the next on my list for the next time I have a smallish group to entertain. I can only imagine what a treat it would be. They provide a good sampling of various types and regions (from complex Bordeaux to sakes), and everyone there is able to speak with some knowledge about any of the offerings (inc a limited selection of spirits and liqueurs as well). The manager of the shop is so well-spoken and knowledgeable about the offerings, you can't help but to wonder where he finds the time to do anything else with himself! The shop also offers a series of supper clubs in the downstairs area, and these events are terrific. We just attended a 5-course vegetarian meal with wine pairings by an up-and-coming chef who'd done time in some of London's best kitchens--and it was such a great experience. The wine was well-paired and explained, and the food was sensational. Plus the friendly ambiance and setting just made for a perfect evening. This shop just adds to the embarrassment of riches in this area, and especially on cold winter's days, I'm very grateful for its proximity to home!

The transformation is remarkable and this new store is well laid out and full of hard-to-find and specialist wines, many of which you can try using their novel Enomatics machines - self-service wine machines. You buy a top-up card and start sampling. I went in on a whim and found myself asking for a very specific NZ Riesling - and came away with a bottle of Pikes 2008 Riesling from the Clare Valley in Australia, a great companion to Vietnamese food from Namo, around the corner.
