It's a charming bakery/cake shop with friendly staff. We popped in mid afternoon and they still had a good selection of sausage rolls & pasties so I got a veggie pastie to take away. Of course then I was looking at the cake counter so also got some chocolate spider and donuts to takeaway. This is a must-visit place if you're in Mentone as it's just so wonderful - it's not modern, or fancy, but they know their cakes and are super welcoming people.

All their sandwiches and rolls are made fresh in front of you with your choice of bread as they bake it themselves. One downside is they don't have any gluten free bread. However all sandwich fillings are fresh and tasty. The inside of the cafe is small with limited table space, however outside is bigger and is undercover with clear "walls" to protect from the wind. If it had been an iced coffee without ice cream I doubt I would have enjoyed it as much. I had a chicken schnitzel sandwich which was exceptionally good on a delicious bread roll. The mayo that was on the sandwich was absolutely to die for! The staff don't seem overly friendly though which is definitely a hinderance on a coffee shop. I prefer to walk in and get warmly greeted and I didn't feel that from this shop. We both ordered the chicken schnitzel (with cheese, red pesto, rocket & mayo for $10) and I got mine on a lot bagel and toasted. They're freshly made right at the counter and the staff have a super chilled but professional vibe - they were so precise about putting the toppings together, I was very impressed. We only had to wait about 5 minutes and then I was in bagel heaven - not only was the bagel amazing but the schnitzel was perfect and I loved the combination of flavours. We have bought their multi-layered creamy birthday cake over a number of years and for $35 to $40 you can get a cake big enough for 20 people. Marciano now has another store in Maidstone so those in the west and north can now also enjoy the best that Chile offers. You can also get the classic Chilean lemonades "Pap", "Bilz" and "Kem".

This cafe is centrally located on the main strip across the road from the Highett train station. The cafe itself is really well designed with a small show kitchen pumping out meals to a rather large minimalistic dining room. It really has a great vibe. The first thing that I was impressed with was the staff. Upon arrival I was greeted warmly, and escorted to my table, offered water and a coffee to start with. This in itself seems to be a lost art in today's restaurant scene. I ordered a jasmine pearl tea to start, which, when arrived was presented on a wooden board, with a cup, an iron teapot and a box with three sandglass minute timers. The first one set at one minute, the second at three mins and the third at five minutes. Each timer representing the strength of the tea. A pretty cool concept. The menu looked awesome, but all I really wanted was poached eggs, bacon and mushrooms. So that's what I ordered. Now it's generally at this stage when I ask the waiter if I could have my bacon crispy, but in all honestly I forgot, so I was a bit concerned. My breakfast arrived in a reasonable timeframe, and my first impression was, that it looked pretty good. It wasn't good, not at all, it was awesome. Let's start with the eggs. Perfectly poached, soft and gooey yolks, and perfectly poached whites. As much as the eggs impressed me it was the bacon that wowed me. Crispy but still juicy and full of flavour, just the way I like it. I have to say this was one of the best bacon and eggs I've ever had. The food that was coming out of that kitchen was amazing. So if you find yourself down Highett way check out The Diplomat, it truly was amazing.
