Also, note to self: ask for the spicy mustard on the side. It doesn't automatically come with it, but it was really good on the sandwich and added the perfect kick. Wonderful to try this again as I had it at the airport one visit. The gentlemen who put together the sandwich was kind and friendly. This was my first time trying Austin's iconic Thundercloud Subs. This might have been unique to the Riverside Thundercloud, but the first thing I noticed was that the interior was lowkey like... dingy. It's a sub shop. No one expects avant garde decor, but even coming in with low expectations it was sub-par (haha, get it?). For one, the order counter is oddly tall and fully wood, so you can't see what they're putting in your sub or the meat/veggie options. The dining area also seemed to function as a storage space, with random stools, kitchen materials, and misc. items cluttering the area. Despite having no patrons in the store they had a line control belt barrier (also called retractable belt barrier stanchions, apparently? The more you know) snaking across the whole front of the restaurant, which felt less like a sub shop and more like you were going through TSA security. The reason for the 3 stars is that the subs were actually pretty solid and the pricing wasn't bad, but the disarray inside really did detract. read more

Veggie and vegan options are limited, but what they offer is pretty good. I've heard good things about their chicken salad, so maybe give that a try if that's your thing. I have always seen this place on riverside and I finally tried it out. Super good tbh better than subway especially the one on riverside. Chicken salad is flavorful! Pretty decently priced itll only get pricey if you add more than 1-2 extra toppings but a small is pretty big and it's only like $6. Got a large today and a cup of chili for $10! A friend brought me to Thundercloud way back in the day, saying how their subs were awesome, so at first I went to try it out and left wondering "what's the big deal"? But over the years I have to say that Thundercloud continues to grow on you, as it's now one of my favorite places to get a sub. They are reasonably priced, have unique offerings (i.e. Thundercloud sauce, Veggie, Egg Salad), their service has always been consistently good, and they always have a special sub offer every week which is awesome! For July 4th week they were offering the large All American Sub (ham, bologna, cheese) for $3.19! Me nots a bolgona fan, but it's still nice to know it's only $3.19! I personally love the Italian, Egg Salad, Vegetarian, Hot Pastrami and Turkey w/ Bacon Sub. I haven't tried their soups so not sure how they are. They offer white or wheat sub bread, which (IMHO) isn't as tasty as Jimmy John's bread, but it does the trick. They're usually packed for lunch but their employees always seem to be able to hande the rush very well. It's an Austin tradtion and one of my favorite submarine shops! read more

This sub reminded me of a discounted version of a Subway sub without the flavors, standardization or lower price. Perhaps, I was turned off to this sub by seeing the employee who was making the subs opening the refrigerator door with the same gloved hands and grabbing containers as she was making the food. Alright, you got me, hippies. Today I had an insane craving for a Nada Chicken salad, so I decided to go for it. The service was, dare I say it? Friendly. My Thunderemployee might've even cracked a smile. It was a collaborative effort between the two of us. The soda fountain is behind the counter at this location, so she filled my large iced tea and added lemon to my cup upon my request. And I gathered my own banana peppers out of the receptacle oddly placed on the counter top because she said she was "too short to pick out the good ones." Cute. She also only charged me for two peppers, when I grabbed four. It still hurts that the salad, two (four) extra peppers, an extra Thundersauce dressing (more oil than vinegar this time), a bag of Baked Lays, and a large iced tea came out to just under $11, WITHOUT tip. I'm from out of town and stopped here from a recommendation by a coworker. You will enjoy the chill atmosphere and tasty sandwich offered by this local establishment. The bread is softer than I personally like or expected, but worked well enough with the toppings and flavor of the dressing. I love me a great sandwich and Thundercloud is a solid choice. I was most impressed by how friendly and caring the staff was. They made great use of the few minutes we had together by getting to know me and sharing the history of the company. Have had great experience at every Thundercloud Subs besides this one. I always get salads & by 7 pm they are always "out of salads". I know they are supposed to make me one anyone if they are out, which no one ever did until I wrote a letter of complaint to the president of the company (then received free vouchers!). Last time I went, the young lady working said they were out, but would make me one (I guess the message got passed down). It. took. forever. Now, that's not her fault, but they should make more salads or whatever they are out of in their downtime. I thanked her for making it for me, but I'll probably never go here again. Their sandwiches are great and so are most of the employees. All except one little creep. He seems to be a shift manager and my encounter with him was on Feb 19th. He is short in stature with brown hair and a beard. He was high, snide and seemingly incapable of remembering "provolone" or "yes, provolone" or "no I want provolone." There was a group of us but we were paying separately. Never the less he though it was a great idea to make all our sandwiches at once, prolonging our time with him. It took him more than thirty minutes to make five sandwiches. On top of that, he took an extra five to eight minutes to yell at a vagabond out in front of the pizza hut next door. While we waited for him to return from the crusade against the homeless several other clients were served by a much more competent employee. Not one of the sandwiches was correct. We were all petty pissed by then. It gets better. One of our group left his jacket so he called the shop to ask them to hold it. No problems there. But this manager decided to make a threat against another one of our party. Lets call him Scott.
