"When someone shows you who they are the first time, believe them".
TLDR: Overcharged and did not deliver the service as contracted. Moreover, attempted to charge us $200 more than the original contracted price when I requested a credit. A company that is unethical, lacking professionalism and refuses to own their mistakes.
We needed a quick kitchen floor for a house sale and TI came recommended by the local building centre. Red flags were raised immediately as they charged $50 for an estimate in spite of the "Free Estimates" clearly indicated on their website. None the less being a contractor myself, I feel everybody deserves to be compensated for their time.
Red Flag #2: The store kept pushing a loose lay sheet floor called Tarkett which is available at Home Depot for .98c/ft. TI verbally started at .79c/ft and ended at $1.79/ft on their quote.
Red Flag #3: The room measured at 300 sq ft but has a stairwell and cabinets. They quoted us a full 300 feet for the floor leveler even though it barely covered 200'. The flooring was trimmed from a roll so 300' was reasonable. An additional quote for stairway carpet included a "trucking charge" which is just a bogus add on. We declined the carpet quote.
In spite of all this we went ahead with the contract as we figured paying extra would get a professional job and support a local business--Nope.
The installers folded the sheet goods into a sharp crease during the install leaving a bubble in the floor. The threshold into the living room was installed 7/8" out of square to the door. The owner proceeded to blame both deficiencies on me and refused to even consider any remedies until I paid the 50% balance in full. I got tired of arguing with him over 2 days and the floor work started to impede the progress/workflow of our other trades so we generously offered to subtract a $150 credit from the final and call it even.
The owner responded 24 hours later with a new invoice of $200 over the original contract price!
We have told our experience to others in town and not surprisingly I hear the similar experiences repeatedly but most have suffered quietly as it is a small town and "everybody knows everybody."
Not me. I am here to warn others, with a population of 5000 and 3 flooring shops I have difficulty understanding how this Napanee business survives. Caveat Emptor. read more
