I had to check it after the recent update. The restaurant is now more dimly lit. The color scheme of the restaurant is now a mix of brown, from the wood, black and green. Overall, the restaurant is pretty and comfortable. The food cane out hot, fresh, and delicious. The most memorable plate for me were the baked barbecue pork buns. They have the exterior of a pineapple bun that you can get from a Chinese bakery, light, crispy, and sweet. The bun is also very light and fluffy! Went here on a Saturday afternoon and it was packed. I mean like 30 tables, plus wait time, but I still saw the servers being as attentive as possible to each tables needs while I was there. Cindy, my waitress, did a great job at explainining each menu item with great detail because when I ordered what she recommended I was thoroughly surprised with her accuracy on the food. I've seeing so many reels about their reopening with new menu items and was excited to check them out. We came for some late lunch and were seated promptly. The restaurant was very spacious and had modern decors. First impressions were great; however, both the food and the service were a bit disappointing for me. We ordered a number of dishes (pictured), and everything tasted mid for me, the dumpling skin on siu mai and the red rice roll were too soft and mushy. My favorite out of everything is probably the noodles and the bbq pork buns. My least favorite has to be the crab meat with mango and cheese crispy roll. It was a mix of savory and mildly sweet but not in a good way. Overall, everything was on the saltier side for me. The service was disappointment. We were never offered any water after getting seated, so we had to request. There was no water refill throughout the meal even though multiple servers came by to deliver our order and remove empty dishes. Only one person (Katie) cared enough to offer to refill our glass after we were finished with the meal. For such a nice restaurant, I was hoping they would be more thoughtful with the service. I haven't had Tim Ho Wan ever since Covid (but I used to often get takeout here), so it's been a very long time. Decided to come back to see their rebrand, which I'm glad they're back and honestly way better than before! Came on a Friday night around 6:50pm and there was no wait at all. We were immediately sat down and we could order through the QR code on the table. Staff were very attentive, there was always at least one person walking around and checking in on you and taking away any empty dishes for more room on the table. My party ordered 8 dishes to share, which was just enough for us. We got: the classic baked bbq pork buns, red crispy shrimp rice roll w/roselle sauce, har gow, siu mai, xiao long bao (3 pc), pan-fried radish cake, steamed bean curd, and the congee. All of these dishes were up to our expectations, can't go wrong with any of them. The red crispy shrimp rice roll is especially unique (and I think this is only at Irvine location), and the roselle sauce surprisingly gives it a good, slight sweetness to it. The baked bbq pork buns were the star of the show as well, especially when the inside was piping hot and it was flavorful. We devoured everything pretty quickly! Overall, I'd say this their rebrand was very much worth the wait and that they will become one of my favorite dim sum places. The new Tim Ho Wan is improved so much, they might consider changing their name. It went from old, stale, cold in the middle dim sum to Michelin Star Perfection. Receiving insider information from the new manager, we discovered they brought in a experienced chef from Hong Kong to lead the kitchen staff. We feel the change, we see the change, but most importantly, we taste the change. There are no superlatives to accurately match how good this food is. When so many established restaurants hire those from other cultures and backgrounds to cook Chinese food, this place wants to give its patrons the genuine taste from true experts. For example, their vegetable spring roll is so light and crispy, it melts in your mouth. Having lived in Taiwan for many years, true pan friend radish cake is impossible to find in California. It just doesn't taste the same. I am wrong, Tim Ho Wan's radish cakes are perfect. Crispy on the outside but so soft and light on the inside. This place has thrown down the standard for all Dim Sum places to be measured. Perfection in all areas. Their tea is also a must. Five stars all day long. We had a great lunch here. I've been to their other location a few years ago and I swear the food got better. I don't remember the siu mai being as big and juicy last time. It was sooooo delicious. It's located in the coveted & ever-growing Diamond Jamboree shopping center, on the corner of Jamboree & Alton Pkway. Honestly, I tend to stay away from this crazy plaza due to the crowded parking madness & crazy drivers) however, occasionally I'll make an exception (esp. when I'm craving Kickin' Crab, hotpot at Haidilao, or pastries at 85 degree bakery). The inside had a newly chic & modern Asian vibe. A total step up from the blah prior decor. The staff was super attentive, friendly & catered to our every need. Shout out to Ting & Dylan for their EXCELLENT service!!! Ting made sure my mom never ran out of hot tea, which she really appreciated and Dylan kept our food coming out hot & fresh. On this lunchie day date, my mums and I shared a couple of dishes, to taste the variety of all that was offered. Of course we opt'd for our usual Har Gow & Siu Mai. My mom chose the steamed bean curd skin w/ pork & shrimp. I chose steamed rice roll w/ BBQ pork. We both agreed on the blanched Chinese broccoli w/ fried garlic for some veggie healthiness. We both were craving some tea to accompany our meal, so my mums went for hot spring tip Jasmine (green) tea option in a hot tea pot, while I liked mine iced..cold brew style. I tried the rose lychee black tea. After trying both, I actually preferred my mom's green tea vs my black tea. Would definitely get it again next time but iced. The menu is now a bit more in-depth than before (even with a few new additions). Long gone were the cheesy paper menu settings. Lol Now, it's been replaced with a hardcover, picture menu (ala DTF style) and convenient QR code ordering system. Once settled at your table, you literally sit, scan the code and order to your hearts desire. Upon sending off your order to the kitchen, a staff member will print out a copy of the dishes ordered and tape it to the table, to keep track thruout your meal ~ ensuring that nothing is forgotten. I found it thoughtful that the pics in the menu correlated to the order & sections in which they appeared on the QR app. Makes for quick & easy ordering and minimizes any mistakes or questions. Since then reviews have indicated that service has improved and the food remains very good. We had the baked bbq pork bun, which was tender, fresh, crispy and savory. The amount of juices and meat in the bun were right proportion. The shrimp ball dim sum was tender, fresh and the wrapping had good consistency. The yu choi was also fresh and tender and makes for a great veggie option to your meal. We also had the siolongbao. It was juicy, savory and felt like it melts in your mouth. The service was attentive, helpful when choosing items, friendly, and quick. I recommend to give them another try if you havent been in a while. Took my family here on Sunday for some dim sum. There was a little bit of a line right before opening, but once they opened we were seated in about 15 minutes. The food was great. We particularly enjoyed the bbq baked buns, roasted bbq pork and the soup dumplings. My 6 year old daughter loved the food so much she asked if we can come here again next weekend. Prices are pretty reasonable as well. We had a ton of food for the 3 of us and had plenty of leftovers for about $100. Service is very efficient and they use online ordering which made it pretty easy to keep adding to our meal. We got here right at opening and they were able to accommodate our big party of 29 people. We were celebrating our late grandpa's birthday and this is his favorite restaurant. The food was delicious and I liked that we could order online. I would rate the service 5/5, our server, Dylan was excellent and has great humor. He was able to tend to our big party and was always around to make sure our food arrived and our drinks were filled. Great Job Dylan! The interior is so pretty and has plenty of seating, we were seated in an area where my family was able to be all together, kind of like a private area from the rest of the tables. The server took our drink order and indicated the QR code for ordering. When I asked about ordering from the menu, she gave us a leaflet to place our order. I like how the buns are not glazed, so it was easier to eat without the stickiness. The Pan fried turnip cake comes with chili sauce, but it was not needed. The Sticky rice in lotus leaf had a nice sauce and a good filling to rice ratio. i was surprised that the Siu mai came 3 to an order, while the Har gow had 4 pieces. The only disappointment was the Spicy Chicken with Cashew. The price was not exorbitant, but there were more pieces of the 2 kinds of chili peppers than chicken or cashews. There is a good tea selection. With so many restaurants now serving tea bags in mugs, it was nice to get a teapot of Pu-erh with teacups. Filled with the exquisite char siu, it's so good. * Crispy Shrimp Red Rice Rolls with Roselle Sauce: The combo of soft thin rice rolls with crispy tempura-like shrimp on the inside is great. The wait for walk-ins is short, but it feels oddly long for a half-empty restaurant. There's no reservation system or waiting list, which makes the flow even more disorganized. Service is friendly, but careless and way too close for comfort. Staff stand right next to the tables the entire time--one waiter literally stayed in front of us with his back turned, completely blocking the view. In a spacious dining area, it felt intrusive and uncomfortable, like you're forced to watch someone's back the whole meal. We ordered a few dim sum items and waited over 20 minutes for the first dish, which arrived ice cold and clearly not properly thawed. The last item took 30+ minutes. At one point, it was brought out multiple times even after we had already paid. We were close to canceling both items, but were just told "it's on the way," without anyone actually checking on the order--just staff standing around without awareness of what's happening at the table. Unfortunately, the core issue goes beyond service--the food itself was the main disappointment. --- The signature bun doesn't look properly baked at first glance--it lacks the usual golden, glossy finish seen in other locations and instead appears pale and underdone. The dough tastes undercooked and overly sweet. Inside, there's very little actual meat--just a gluey, heavy sauce with small bits of meat, while the bottom remains visibly raw. Even after requesting a remake, the second version was still doughy and wet inside with uneven cooking; it did include a few more pieces of meat that were noticeable, but the overall texture and doneness were still off. --+ The har gow was one of the better items visually--small, delicate, and appealing in shape--but the shrimp quality fell short, with a texture suggesting it had been previously frozen multiple times. --- The carrot cake is soggy and unstable, almost impossible to pick up. The carrot pieces are too large and watery, and the whole thing turns into a porridge-like texture. It's also overly salty, which makes it harder to finish. --- The beancurd skin rolls with pork and shrimp were inconsistent. The first serving arrived steaming hot on the surface but still cold inside, with ice still detectable--raising concerns about whether it was properly thawed or freshly prepared. After requesting a replacement, the second serving was hot but appeared poorly assembled, with little to no filling in most of the rolls. What filling there was lacked depth, with more noticeable vegetable and mushroom fragments than actual meat or shrimp. ---The siu mai is overly salty and has a coarse texture, likely from being chopped too finely, which disrupts the usual bite and balance. ---The signature red rice roll with crispy shrimp was perhaps the most concerning. Overall, the kitchen seems inconsistent with basic execution--proper thawing, cooking buns correctly, and maintaining freshness. There was some mix-ups with our teas and the staff was nice enough to give us a pot on the house as a thank you for our patience. I am sure that the service will improve as the team gets more experience together. LINES: We came on Christmas Day and only waited about 20 minutes in line before the opening at 11:30. Plan accordingly and get in line early! FOOD: I liked *most* dishes we tried. The best was the fried silken tofu bites and the spicy dumplings. I love Tim Ho Wan. I'm pregnant and have been craving chicken feet even though I didn't used to eat it when I wasn't pregnant. You order through their QR code but servers will still check on you and ask about your order. They will check on it for you on their own if you look like you've been waiting for a while. Irvine just got its biggest upgrade with the newly reopened Tim Ho Wan. Yes, this is THE world's most inexpensive Michelin-starred restaurant. After their remodel, they still kept a lot of their dishes from before, like the signature baked BBQ pork buns and other classic dim sum items, but let me tell you, it's completely different now--in the best way possible--under new management. They had their chefs specially flown in from Hong Kong and Singapore to train the new staff here, and you can really taste the difference in the carefully selected ingredients, like using fresh milk from black & white cows instead of the traditional condensed milk for the HK-style hot milk tea. Even something as simple as the roasted BBQ pork and braised beef noodles taste so different now, and SO robust with flavor. The crispy shrimp red rice rolls were the favorite of the table, with an INSANE crunch to it, but OMG the house made hibiscus sauce they call roselle sauce seriously takes it to another level like I'm not even kidding. You NEED to try this for yourself ;) And if there's one thing you have to order that's the avocado dumplings which were specially curated for the Irvine location. Absolutely demolished those.
