I've been coming here over the last decade and have seen many changes. Currently it is in the best form yet. An authentic menu seems to be what filled the place with Chinese on this Sunday night. I ordered Wontons in hot chili oil hoping to get something similar to a Scechuan dish I recently tried in New York. The large bowl of wonton soup was hot and very hot, making me sweat around my eyes and I admit to shedding a few tears. Though more symbolically they were tears of gratitude to be so warmed up on a cold Portsmouth night. The pleasant waitperson brought me two big glasses of tap water and I was given a large bowl of shrimp chips to nibble whilst slurping my soup. I'll be back real soon to try more dishes on the big new menu.

First time took it back and got something else that escapes memory but was no better as I recall Benefit of the doubt as local but second time obtained a refund !!! Proprietor also owns nearby fish & chip shops (will add a review on that later) but would not recommend even if it is cheap

This Wagamamas is located at Gun Wharf Quays shopping centre, and is on the second tier, looking out onto the harbour. Four dishes consumed this lunchtime and all were good. As 'starters' we had duck gyoza and chilli squid, which were both good, although i would recommend the edamame beans with chilli and garlic salt. For the 'main' course we had yasai katsu curry (sweet potato, aubergine and butternut squash deep-fried in panko breadcrumbs, served with a curry sauce and sticky white rice. garnished with dressed mixed leaves and red pickles) which was very good and very filling and also: Raisukaree (tender marinated chicken breast stir-fried in a coconut and lime curry sauce with mangetout, peppers, red and spring onions, fresh ginger and garlic. served with rice and garnished with mixed sesame seeds, red chillies, coriander and lime) which again was lovely. A very filling, and good lunch, well worth a visit. Although we did not on this occasion, we usually take our 4yr old daughter, and she loves the food, the restaurant being child friendly.

I was straight away given the choice of chopsticks or cutlery, which I thought was rather polite as my chopstick skills are not great! Since the new owners took over the food quality has definitely dropped off. One of my favourite dishes was the fillet steak in fresh cream and black pepper sauce. It use to be thick creamy and peppery, and the steak use to "melt" in your mouth. Now though, the fillet is now just beef and it tasted as though the beef had been poached in milk with no seasoning. It was bland and tough. I'm really disappointed but for me though the biggest let down is the service, I live nearby and I live in a block of flats with a lot of elderly residents who used to love popping in midweek for a meal and a chat, one such resident recently told me she was in there and was charged £28 for fried rice, a sweet & sour chicken and a Chinese tea. Worst though instead of taking time to talk to her the servers just sat at a spare table playing on their phones. She left feeling lonelier than when she went in. Please take care with the food and take care of your customers.
