I visited this location on a Monday around 9:20 a.m. after confirming on Google Maps that they were open. There were two cars in the parking lot, so I went to the entrance off 16th Street but couldn't get in. I then tried the lab door, where I could clearly see two male employees inside. They looked directly at me but didn't acknowledge me, offer assistance, or let me know if they were closed. I sat in my car for several minutes finishing this review, and no one came to check or communicate anything. Extremely disappointing experience , no customer service, no professionalism, and no clarity about whether they were even open. Based on this experience alone, I would not return. read more

An updated five star review in the time of COVID. As if I could love the Tinker team any more, they've adapted to the current situation with such heart and innovation. For example, they're currently selling a bottled spiced latte for carryout with the option of purchasing bottles on behalf of Indy's healthcare workers. They're also currently offering free shipping on orders over $25. Two weeks ago, I ordered beans for at home along with their individual coffee pouches to send my remote team. Hey all: great way to send some love to coworkers via snail mail (the pouches fit beautifully into traditional card envelopes). Man, oh man. Turns out- I'm a Colombian coffee fan. I had no idea until the owner from Tinker Coffee walked us through four of their different blends and had us experiment by smelling and tasting the coffees at different parts in the process (coffee cupping!). I loved learning about where the beans come from, the business owners, and the heart behind the product. Tinker is sold all over Indy, therefore you've probably tried it somewhere! It's reasonably priced for a bag of coffee beans (ends up being about $1 per cup of coffee you make) and tastes delicious. Tinker Coffee is in the process of building out their cafe. My husband and I showed up thinking that they were a fully functioning cafe, when they are solely a roaster right now. The staff was AWESOME! They made us pour overs and talked is through some of the great spots in Indy. They seriously were so hospitable and welcoming, taking time out of their work day. We were blown away by their openness to still make us a cup of coffee when we had made the mistake of thinking the space was a cafe. Seriously so great! On a recent work trip to Indy we were lucky enough to get a coffee cupping experience with one of the owners of Tinker. Not only did we sample incredibly delicious coffees (and I was able to identify why I liked some roasts more than others) but we also learned a ton about the tasting experience, how the beans are roasted, flavor profiles, and more. It was a sincere pleasure and his enthusiasm for coffee was contagious. I was also lucky enough to enjoy Tinker Coffee at several venues throughout Indy during my trip and I have to say I didn't have a single disappointing cup. I don't get to Indy as often as I would like but I love that they also sell their beans online. I've been known to order coffee from my favorite roasters around the country and I'll certainly be adding Tinker to the rotation. read more

Having tried Tinker Coffee at quite a few local coffee shops, I decided to finally head downtown to the source of those fine brews to get some for home. The location does not have a "fresh pot brewing" for you, so if you are thinking it's a coffee shop, you would be mistaken. What it does have is the source beans and a large roaster and the end product sold (as whole beans or ground) in 12 oz. bags. When I entered, I was greeted and the man asked what kind of coffee I liked, what I used to make it, and then made recommendations for the coffees that best fit that description. I picked up a couple of the resealable bags: One was Muheres Cafeteras (Coffee Women) which is medium coffee from Colombia that is from a collective of over 300 female coffee producers. It has hints of Granny Smith apples, cinnamon, and jam. I don't have the best equipment at home, and may not have made it quite strong enough, but the flavors were very subtle, but nice. I also picked up a Finca La Aurora (Villa Aurora) from Nicaragua which is another medium blend with hints of chocolate, shortbread, and red apple. This one was my preferred flavor as the accents came through a little better on my equipment and balanced out quite well. Neither of the choices had the bitterness I've found in store bought coffee. Yeah! As I wrote earlier, there was a balance in the flavor so that though there is probably some bitterness, it didn't dominate the flavor. For those who are interested, there are occasional "cupping" events on site that cost $15 for a class (90 to 120 minutes) held on select Saturdays. You do have to reserve a spot on their website to attend since they limit the class size to make it manageable for the staff and enjoyable for the visitors. I hope to make one of the upcoming classes soon so I can learn all about the finer points of appreciating coffee nuances. Until then, I will simply enjoy what I have just purchased. Just an FYI- this review is really for the Tinker Coffee shop located at the Indianapolis airport. First, let me tell you the things I really appreciate about this Tinker Coffee location. The coffee drink prices are REASONABLE for coffee at the airport. They open before the chickens rise (aka you can get your cup of Jo' before 5a). It's located inside Concourse B, so you don't have throw away liquids when you go through security. They have a bomb breakfast sandwich, which was not only reasonable price for airport food but also actually really good. This was the first time I've probably ever been happy with what I bought inside the airport. Staff is friendly even before 5a, quick, and can provide good coffee to travelers. You know you found coffee that you love when you're seriously considering spending $95 on a 5lb bag. That's where I'm at with Tinker Coffee. We've been making cold brew with their beans for a few weeks after discovering it at Studio C, and I may never be the same. We had an amazing experience with Tinker at a recent work conference. They came to the coworking space we were at for the day to host the morning icebreaker. We got to do a coffee cupping -- my first time! For someone who drinks and appreciates local roasters as much as I do, I was glad to get this experience under my belt for the first time. The process gives you way more insight into how roasting and brewing enhances or changes flavor profiles of a coffee. It helped me appreciate the different regions and pick out the differences in flavor and intensity. Plus, Tinker's coffee is killer! We got to sip some afterward, freshly brewed. And I snagged a bag for home. I usually go for a Guatemala, but Ethiopian roasts are my boyfriends favorite and it was great to give him the Indy coffee experience back home. I've met a few of the staff members at Tinker through random events around the city and they've all been nothing but helpful, friendly people. They're all extremely passionate and knowledgeable. I had the experience of doing a cupping session. I knew little-to-nothing about "craft" coffee, but I feel like I had a better understanding after this educational session. They also have great partnerships throughout the state, so be sure to check the roasters of local coffee shops and restaurants - they might be using Tinker's roasts! Why can't we have more Tinkers in the world? I love how coffee culture is all about sharing ideas, giving back to the community, community not competition, and good vibes all over. Tinker meets every one of these cultural tendencies. I work for another roaster in Portland OR and I had brought by a couple of bags to trade with these guys. We ended up spending a half hour making coffee and sharing our passion. Jeff was really nice and helped my buddy get his youth room set up with an awesome grinder and drip machine. If you are in Indy and need some good equipment this is the place to go. Their product is top notch and could compete with the best in Portland. If you're looking for Indy's top notch coffee roaster, Tinker is it! When we first moved to Indy I immediately noticed that Tinker were the cool guys in town. And they aren't just cool, they're coffee is delicious. So much knowledge and it helps that their whole team is so nice! While I love their coffee I also love their pop-up espresso bar called Tinker Gemini. It's like a business inside of a business but ran all by the same people. Since Covid they've had to get creative so they've been doing pop-up drive thrus and let me just say that whoever made the Five Spice Latte is genius! It's so good! I can't recommend Tinker coffee highly enough. I stumbled upon their shop last year and they totally changed my coffee game. I was struggling to match the great brews I was getting at coffee shops at home. They were super helpful and recommended using a scale at home. Game changer. I'm so accustomed to being nickle-and-dimed in every business I go to, and it takes a place like this to remind you what really great customer service and a really great product look like. I came into Tinker for the first time three weeks ago, and the gentleman working there was really helpful in educating me on how I could prepare better coffee at home with the equipment I already owned. He didn't try to sell me a new device, just a bag of beans and some actionable tips. The coffee I brewed when I got home was so much better than what I had been making. One of the big tips he gave me was on water quality, and he told me how I could go buy some, but if I would bring a container into the store he would get some that he prepares himself from their RO machine that they remineralize. The next week I did just that. I had just bought the container from a hardware store and it was dirty. He washed it himself, then filled it up with specially prepared coffee water, and then just gave it to me even though I didn't need to buy more coffee that week (as I still had some from the week before). I thought he meant to sell it, but he just gave it to me and sent me on my way. I was blown away. I'll buy all my coffee from these guys in the future, and I recommend you do yourself (and good commerce) a favor and stop in. read more

Tinker Coffee Company is a coffee roasting company located on 16th street, formerly known as Tinker Street. Packaging and selling 5 different varieties of coffee (Columbia, Ethiopia, Mexico, Guatemalan and Kenya), this new Indianapolis business is buzzing with new partnerships and is brewing their way into local cafe houses. I was invited over for a coffee cupping, aka tasting, where I smelled and tasted my way through 3 of their coffees. This 1-2 hour learning experience enlightened me into the world of coffee: an interesting array of history, geography, smells and flavors, brewing methods and more. You start by smelling whole beans, then the fine ground beans, followed by smelling and tasting the brewed coffee. It's a unique process involving spoons, slurping and note-taking. If you want to learn about coffee, Tinker Coffee Company will walk you through the process. Now that I know more about coffee, I appreciate the work that goes into acquiring, roasting and marketing an intricate craft. First off, this is Not an actual coffee shop. It Is primarily a coffee roaster. They do Not sell coffee drinks. (Don't tell anyone else, but they might brew you up a "sample" cup if you ask them to). They Do sell coffee beans. They Are open, so you can walk in there. They Don't look open but just look for the lit light bulb and the guy hunched over his laptop. If you are looking for a coffee experience rather than just a drink, do yourself a favor and stop in here. Steve and Jeff will be more than glad to tell you all about it. We stopped in here looking for a drink of some sort. Walk in the door and we see Steve hunched over his laptop. He looks up and asks if we're looking for coffee. Umm, yeah if you want to make us some. So he makes us "samples", aka a regular pour-over. Meanwhile he's telling us all about their business and their coffee. Then he want to show us the Probat roaster and the computer program they use to monitor the roast. That turns out to be quite interesting since I never get to see that part of the coffee process. We finish the "nerd out" experience as he calls it, and pay for our coffee and merchandise via a card reader and payment program he has hooked up to his iPhone. The bad news is; I tasted the coffee too soon and burned my tongue. The good news is; the coffee was so ridiculously, amazingly, unusually tasty that it didn't even matter. A couple miles down the road, aromas of toasted marshmallow drift up through my nose and onto my tongue as I take a contemplative sip. Following are notes of cherry and orange marmalade. Outstanding!! I attended the cupping class here last week with my family. I learned so much about coffee and now know that I am doing it all wrong. First we walked in and had a cup of the Brazilian roast while we learned about the production process. Then we went through the cupping process with their NEW Columbian, Ethiopian, and Nicaraguan roasts. You learn everything from the way the coffee beans are different, to the smell, to the taste. I felt SUPER Elite because they did not even have tasting notes for the Columbian yet. They provide pastries from Milktooth during the cupping class as well. Overall, I learned so much including how to store coffee and when to grind the beans for the best flavor. I will definitely be back to pick up some Columbian coffee. First of all, I am a complete newbie to coffee world, so my opinion is probably not well developed or representative enough. Bear with me :-P There are reasons why every review is 5-star here. I agreed that it is more of a roaster than a coffee shop. They provide coffee beans to some of the best cafes here in Indy. Please check them out on their website if you want to try. Like other reviews mentioned that almost every variety of coffee from them is great. Just simply GREAT! One thing I really appreciate is that they usually medium roast their beans which make the flavor more distinctive and satisfying that you can Actually Really taste them. I just came back from their cupping class which is $15. Totally worth it even beyond. The schedule is pretty packed currently though, so plan ahead if you want to participate. Another thing is they have $5 sample size which is great because I collected probably 4-5 of them and just snacking the beans straight from the bag. It may sound a little crazy but coffee beans is probably my current favorite "nuts" as a snack. Again, because they are all just medium roasted, so not that bitter at all.
