special margs - watermelon with passionfruit

tasty frozen margs - we got the special so it was much cheaper I think only $6 or $7. They were watermelon with a passionfruit topping, delicious but very weak drinks and pretty small. You get a free bag of popcorn and a bustling atmosphere with both indoor and outdoor seating.

Two of the best tequilas you could try. El Tesoro and Herrencia Historico

When you walk into Tio's you are walking back in time to a US/Mexico boarder town cantina. The music is old school spanish rock, the tequila collection is no joke better stocked than anywhere else I've seen in Sydney and the spicy popcorn is the now official handshake of the Sydney small bar. We start on a Paloma and Ricardo trying the tequila with Ginger Beer before moving on to what we are really after. Serious tequilas. After a few complimentary tastings we settle on a glass of the el Tesoro de Don Felipe anejo tequila (one of the best rated tequilas on the planet) and an equally smooth Herrencia Historico both $100-$200 bottles of tequila that I wouldn't dare open if I could get a bottle in my collection. These guys know their tequila and my sombrero goes off to them. **Want a shot or a quick tequila hit?? - Tequila drinks, cocktails - range from $10-$20 **Are you a tequila connoisseur?? - Extra Anejo & Anejo Tequilas can be found at Tio's - a generous pour will set you back anywhere from $18 to $30 dollas but oh so worth it. **Want to avoid a line?? Go midweek (before 630pm) or for an inspirational tequila Sunday which is what we prefer. ** Try something new or something to make you feel homesick. Paloma's are the national tequila drink in Mexico - (tequila with grapefruit soda) - try it!! $10

Fancy and tasty, the best of both worlds!

Feel like blowing off steam in a way that only beer and a huge range of Mezcal & Tequila can? Enter Tio's. This place is a bit of an icon, fairly unassuming from the outside, it can be quiet one night and raucous the next. Testament to all of the good times had in this establishment, one of the first things you'll notice is the impressive range of garments hanging from the ceiling! Why not have a few Tecate with salt and lime to take the edge off after a long day? Then if you're game, grab a small batch Mezcal with some dehydrated pineapple and have a chat with the very friendly staff and probe their seemingly infinite knowledge on all matters Mexican booze. I've never had a bad time at Tio's, not sure it's even possible. That in mind, don't forget to drink responsibly.

$10 tequila drinks, spiced popcorn and hipsters galore. What's not to love? I was enjoying the "Roberto" made with tequila, three herbs, fresh apple juice, lime and cucumber. Also recommend the "Bloody Maria" Tio's take on the classic bloody mary. It was very spicy with a nice kick. This place is trendy, but also surprisingly casual and chilled out. Great addition to the Surry Hills neighbourhood. I'll be back again soon.

Roberto. Go on, it's good for you.

Fun divey bar specializing in tequila. Had a margarita but not up to my SoCal standards. Bartenders/owners really cool..

$16 for a bottle of beer!! This is an outrageous even by Sydney prices. The price list needs to be urgently reviewed.

We did not have a reservation, but they fit us in as a walk-in at a small coffee table with 2 ottoman seats. Not the most comfortable set up, but I appreciate the cozy atmosphere, almost like you are sitting in someone's very posh and dimly lit den. All the NOLA classics were featured, like Vieux Carre (no likey), old fashioned (likey), and hurricane. There were some twists on the classics as well. I liked the newer house specialties, and ended up having 3 drinks, more than I intended. We snacked on some popcorn chicken, which was nothing special, but very satisfying when hungry. We were also lucky enough to be there when the live jazz band played a brief set, which really set the mood. I took off a star because not every drink was a homerun, and the service was a bit too impersonal for a speakeasy. We had a different server each time. One of my favorite parts of going to a speakeasy is to watch the bartenders work their magic and ask them for recommendations, and if I'm lucky, maybe get an off menu drink. Not quite set up that way here.

It's a Jazz club with live acts every night, its a bar lounge. It's sophisticated dark and intimate. " Once you're inside Step back", says the purple haired door mistress with the voice activated LED t shirt, "and look up". Apparently painted by a famous Sydney artist, there is a huge mural on the ceiling. The place was pumping on Friday night. Jimmy Vargas and Mia Mortal (say it slowly... ) Vargas like a Brian Ferry look-a-like is apparently a self titled 'Croonoir' from San Francisco's cabaret. Mia Mortal has been sashaying the burlesque scene for the past 25 years. The show was a stunner. The Owner Craig was at the door when we walked in, he told us he'd moved up from Melbourne, and had been running clubs like Lazybones for years. He said "If it's not underground, I'm not interested" I liked his Moxie, and I had to concur. The hipster scene seems finally on it's knees with the clientele here being an over 30s crowd. I admit, I felt very relaxed. I even saw a member of a well known Sydney rock band here. If you want to stay ahead of the game? Say Hello to sophisticated class! Lazybones you're doing it right. $10 on the door gets you entry. Wine and Beer are priced reasonably, cocktails at $18 seemed a little pricey, but it looked like top shelf liquor. The menu, while I didnt try it, featured "Bunny Chow" with pick your own topping for around $12 as I recall. There were also Samosas and curries. It's very loud on a Friday night, Adults only. Good for date night or a chilled out trip into sin alley.

The photos in the entry way were super cool. As we descended down the stairs, it felt like we were going back in time to the Roaring 20s. It was a Wednesday night, so the bar wasn't terribly crowded, though it was still busy. We grabbed a seat and browsed the menu. After a few minutes, no one came by so I eventually got up and ordered at the bar. I had to wait nearly 10 minutes before I was even able to order a drink. I don't know what the hold up was, but the service was extremely slow. While I was waiting, there were some drunk guys who were pushing the hanging light fixtures. This went on for a few minutes and the staff never said anything to them. It was annoying and extremely off putting. Once I was finally able to order a drink, I asked for a Martinez. The bartender could not understand me. I think I repeated myself at least three times. I guess the way I pronounced "Martinez" sounded like "martinis" lol. I ended up pointing to the drink in the menu before he finally understood what I was trying to order. I know I have an accent, but I didn't think it was that heavy lol. I will say that my Martinez was well made and tasted so good! My friend had planned to order a drink, but changed her mind after she saw how long it took for me to get my drink. Luckily she's a local, so she can go back whenever she wants. If it weren't for the long wait and the annoying drunk guys, this would have been a 5-star experience. If you enjoy craft cocktails and have patience, go check it out.
