Bacalhau na Vila -- A temple to Portugal's most iconic ingredient…read more Portugal has a deep culinary relationship with Bacalhau, and Bacalhau na Vila leans into that heritage completely. This isn't simply a restaurant that happens to serve cod; the entire concept is built around it. The menu explores bacalhau through multiple traditional preparations, each highlighting a different texture and flavour profile. We started with cream of spinach soup with cod, a surprisingly elegant opener. The soup was smooth and comforting, with the cod adding a savoury depth that balanced the creaminess without overpowering it. The appetizers showcased two beloved Portuguese classics. The codfish cakes (pastéis/bolinhos de bacalhau) were perfectly executed--light, crisp, and fluffy with well-balanced seasoning. The pataniscas, a looser cod fritter, had a rustic charm with a golden exterior and tender interior. For the main course we ordered roasted cod, which was excellent. The fish was flaky and deeply flavourful, demonstrating why bacalhau has been such an enduring staple in Portuguese cuisine. What makes the restaurant memorable is how intentionally it celebrates this ingredient. Cod has historically played a major role in Portugal's food culture, and Bacalhau na Vila turns that history into a cohesive dining experience. Service was friendly, attentive, and professional, with staff who clearly know the menu and take pride in the concept. If you're visiting Sintra and want to experience one of Portugal's most iconic ingredients prepared in several traditional styles, Bacalhau na Vila is a great place to do it.

Solar dos Nunes - Black Pork tenderloin. Over salted but good when eaten together with the spinach and boiled bread.

Really slow service Really salty, mediocre food…read more Servers were constantly coughing all over the restaurant. Also coughing into their hand. Then touching the food. The food comes out through a small window from the kitchen and the waiters also scream through this window with the food sitting right there...no doubt some drops of saliva made it onto the food. Not sure if I'm more bothered by this bc of Covid or if I'd still be bothered had there not been a pandemic but I'm sure no one wants someone else's saliva in their food. 1 star for the ambiance. -1 for the wait -1 for the food -1 for the lack of hygienic practices -1 for the overall negative experience Also, is the credit card machine really truly broken or is something else going on to make you pay in cash?

Highlights: Michelin guide was so wrong…read more Below average, extremely over salted food (and we enjoy salty food! Relatively over priced Very slow (we were there for 2+ hours, mostly waiting for food and so did every table; maybe it's the local culture to lounge and wait long periods for food?) Fish soup for 2 So overpriced for 43 euro, worst part was it took 1.5 hours to come out after ordering. Salty, basic soup. Barely any fish or shrimp in it. Leaves of mint floating atop. Needs 2x the volume of water to dilute the salt out so you can detect any sort of flavor. Made us angry this was recommended, given all the great food we've had thus far in Portugal Black pork tenderloin with boiled bread garlic purée and spinach purée This was fine, the spinach purée were interesting, the garlic bread purée, also interesting -- very strong garlic flavor. Sadly, the pork is was again super duper salty. Basic pork flavor Encharcada dessert Dessert of fried egg yolk drenched in sugar syrup, it was good and interesting but not a must order thing The 2 mains were so extremely salty, we initially thought they made a mistake with the soup. Nope. Seems completely intentional unless they also made a mistake with the pork too. A sadly, disappointing experience.
