The store does feel pretty old-fashioned inside and it hasn't had any sort of refurb which a lot of the more central and mall locations have, such as the nearest other branch of Waterstones at Meadowhall, which despite being a little smaller is one of my favourite branches of Waterstones. Decent selection of books and the location is decent too being the only Waterstones branch in Sheffield centre, located in Orchard Square fairly close to Costa and Primark. Some unique features to decor mainly in the exterior, but in the interior, it is pretty dark, and a tad gothic, and reminds me a lot of one of my local branches at Manchester - Deansgate. 2* - Useful brand and a decent sized store but for me, it lacks that interior beauty juxtaposing old and new which many of the latest Waterstones stores do have.

The space is attractive and inviting, with plenty of space to browse and to enable good displays of the more popular books. In common with all bookshops it faces strong competition from Amazon, but does a decent job in providing an alternative: while it can never stock such a large selection or compete on price, it has advantages such as being able to browse at leisure, especially useful when you don't know exactly what you're looking for.

It is in a good location, right near one of the lifts and it does stand out, because of being both big and looking quite modern. The staff didn't seem too helpful when I was walking around like a headless chicken and stood at the checkouts, like someone who doesn't know where he is. Due to its size and good selection of most things I feel 3 stars is a good, fair rating but because of the pricing being slightly on the pricey side and the staff needing improvement, I feel 3 stars is actually quite generous.

I think there prices are just ridiculous compared to many other shops selling exactly the same items. all in all poor service from what should be a very good shop!

Round the back there are two staff members, and in my opinion it is hard not to stare at them both: one of them has natural bright copper hair that would look lovely if she grew it; the other one is a young girl whose uniform blouse seems to always be a couple of sizes too small. So yeh, Worksop WHSmith: the staff are better to look at than the books.

However once you step down to the other level you find that too many different items have been crammed into too smaller place which means the choice is small. There is a small DVD section, a small CD selection and other small areas for cards, stationary, magazines and gifts. On a Saturday the place gets very full and there tends to be no where to move.

But The Works is not just a bookshop - they also have a surprisingly good range of artists' materials, including paint and canvas, and some crafty items too such as papers and card-making supplies. And they sell a few toys, as well as stationery and greetings cards. Their stock changes quite regularly, so it's always worth wandering in for a browse round to see what the latest bargains are!

While they don't have the personalised book recommendations and tags describing the book, handwritten using the opinions of staff and newspaper reviews, the store did still have a pretty good overall feel and selection. Another understaffed store within the mall however and I do think the stationery and newsagents part of the business did suffer a little bit due to the decision for this store to have a focus on books. It is still, however, a pretty good branch of WHSmith within intu Derby, being one of the few places to have a selection of books within the city centre, even if the prices are slightly higher than online giants such as Amazon. 3*

WH Smiths in the new Westfields Centre is home to all things stationary. It is great for gifts or…read moretreats for yourself. The store now seems much more bigger than it did in the old Eagle Centre and it is definatly more bright. I've visited the new store several times looking for gifts. A lot of the promotional books are laid out well and not hidden like most stores. The stationary is pricey if you compare it to somewhere like The Works, but with good quality brand names, you pay for quality. Staff are always very helpful and polite and queues are never bad.
