Toad Hall Cafe is a gem! Beautiful and slightly rustic restaurant with a lovely country store attached. Excellent menu for breakfast and lunch (my boys LOVED the Biscoff French Toast, I enjoyed the eggs Benedict on sour dough and excellent coffee). Outdoor play area for kids, some lovely outdoor seating too. We may actually eat here all 3 days of our trip to the area! read more

What a refreshing rustic restaurant and fresh food market located in Motueka. Loved the natural, rustic, and open restaurant area located just past the doors upon entering the food market, its expansive floor plan rotating between different indoor and outdoor areas. They are family-owned and operated, the love and attention put into the natural, wooded space quite apparent. Menu items are sourced locally so they are as fresh as possible. I had the Lamb Burger with their "world famous" slow roasted lamb patty, topped with a fresh picked salad, mint jelly, and tomato salsa. The lamb burger patty was actually shredded meat -- rather than minced -- and packed into a puck. It was a little tough to tear the meat, a fork coming in handy to eventually deconstruct the burger. The salad portion was extraordinary as well, requiring the use of the fork to pick away at it before crafting the burger/ sandwich. Overall though, it was ultra yummy, scrumptious burger, the mint jelly combo enhancing the enjoyability greatly. It left me feeling satiated though not overly bloated. The freshness was prominent indeed. Beers were flowing and while they claim to host a keg of nearby Hop Federation, the single offering was somewhat basic (a pilsener). I actually opted for a local Pinot Noir, a lovely pairing with the Lamb Burger. The TOAD Hall is an easy option while in Motueka and Tasman area! read more

Excellent. Very happy the guide at Wilson's mentioned it when I asked where I could get a quick coffee. Pastries are top notch and a cooler full of prepared foods and salads looked absolutely delicious and healthy. Hard to imagine there's a better place to eat or stock up on the road to Abel Tasman. read more

TOAD hall. For some weird reason I was expecting to see toads from the Mario video games everywhere yelling at me. Yeahhhooooo! Whoooooaaaa! Okkkkkk! But no, it was a human woman that greeted me. And of course, toad isn't real except inside your Nintendo. Well mushrooms are real but they don't talk, unless you eat those special ones. And then everything talks to you. Ok what am I TALKING about. Let's just get to the food.. lol This place does it all. A breakfast, lunch, and dinner spot. I came for dinner and the food was delicious! A bit pricey for what you get but the flavor was there!! The breakfast and lunch menu are consistent. But the dinner menu is always changing from week to week. The choices were pork dumplings, smoked salmon fish cakes. They were under the starter portion of the menu. $18 each and you only get 2 fish cakes. I found myself eating the boring flavorless salad underneath because I was still hungry. The dumplings come with a plum sauce that isn't very good, but the dumplings weren't bad, considering this isn't an Asian place. The big issue with the meal was that they forgot to make our food!! But I was in such a good mood it didn't bother me so much. The restaurant made it right though! A free drink and free dessert for the mistake. I could have got something with alcohol but got another chai latte instead. Sooo good. When I pass up free alcohol for a latte, you know it's good LOL I'd like to come back and see what their breakfast is all about. I'd say don't come for dinner, not worth it, but lunch or breakfast sure! read more

The name may not be inspiring but what is within Toad Hall was freshly made food and their own brewery offering refreshing suds. If you are making the drive from Nelson to Kaiteriteri or beyond, I would recommend stopping by this place for lunch or a bite. The patio seating outside is a mix of covered and uncovered areas. It's very charming and relaxing atmosphere. There's a friendly dog that roams the grounds to make sure everyone is having a great time. We got their self-proclaimed "world-famous in Mouteka" seafood chowder and the peperonata pasta to share. The seafood chowder did not disappoint as there was huge chunks of seafood swimming in the cream sauce. It was very good and lived up to the billing. The peperonata pasta was a really pleasant surprise with a very deep and rich tomato sauce that has been slowly simmered. It was very hearty but not heavy. There was a little bit of chatter in the air from locals and other tourists alike just taking in the afternoon. Overall, this was a lovely place to have lunch! read more

Amazing lunch options. Homemade parpadelle noodle dish was to die for. Scallop salad great! And the very best thing of all was the roasted veggie side salad. I'm generally a fan of all roasted veggie side salads, but this one was far and above better than any I've ever had. Excellent quality food in a very pleasant atmosphere. Super nice outdoor seating.they also sell fresh produce and some other grocery items. Iced coffee and fruit smoothies looked amazing. I would give them five stars in a minute if they offered more whole-grain options. read more

For us, no trip to Motueka visiting family is complete without a trip to Toad Hall; in fact we insist on it! Built in the 1850's, T.O.A.D Hall was the original school house at the first ever school built in Motueka and was re-sited to where it is now. Today it's a unique grocery store and licensed cafe restaurant with spacious outdoor seating. T.O.A.D Hall is open for breakfast/brunch and lunch all year round. The King Kahuna breakfast is a must! It comes with top class free range bacon and sausage, poached eggs, roasted tomatoes, grilled mushrooms and a hash cake. It's the kind of meal that will keep you going all day. Other items on the breakfast menu include Pancakes with bacon and fruit and a Smoked Salmon Rosti among other tempting delights. The presentation of the food is excellent and the portions generous. We've yet to make it for lunch but the Pork Belly Burger and World Famous Lamb Burger look worth the visit. They have kids menus and a playground as well. Summer evenings see the start of pizza season where an outdoor kitchen and pizza oven is set up and the place is packed with tourists and locals all seated at large tables to enjoy fresh handmade pizza and local beer, wine and ciders. At the entrance to the building you'll find groceries including fresh produce and artisan breads, ice cream, juices and smoothies, arts, crafts and wooden toys. I visit New Zealand like Christmas - but once a year. Part of my yearly pilgrimage includes a visit to Toad Hall. It's been no little pleasure to watch it's evolution from fruit and ice cream stand roadside to cafe and to weekend restaurant with live entertainment. Tonight, we had made a reservation. Despite making it in advance, when we arrived there was no mention of it. No matter, we were still seated, and had the pleasure of the live music and the food, which was, as always, exceptional. I have to take a moment to give a shout out to the sounds engineer... The live music mix was a compliment to the atmosphere, and didn't overpower conversation at our table. While our food was a little slow to the table, due to the full house, it was well worth the wait, and the staff was lovely and overly-apologetic. When the food hit the table, all transgressions, due to circumstance, were forgotten. I had the daily fish which was fresh, playful to the palate, and the local fresh herbs were from fields so close, I could have tossed a frisbee into them. Looks like a quaint small town diner from afar, however as you enter you are greeted with fresh fruit for sale before reaching the front counter displaying enticing pies and baked goods. If you sit down for breakfast, you are transported into a an extremely charming and peaceful custom designed spacious wooden hall complete with birds perusing around. We Ordered the cheese scone and date scone, which were probably the best scones i've ever had in my life. We tried the fresh juices which tasted fresh squeezed and authentic. Ordered the focaccia chicken sandwich and bacon wrap to go, delicious after kayaking in Abel Tasman. We returned the next morning for cappuccino and ordered the eggs Benedict and avocado smash, both terrific as well. Completely unexpected to find such a world class gourmet brunch restaurant in the middle of the countryside. Lastly, make sure to pass by the restrooms which are actually custom built outdoor houses, with a message on the wall about how to live your life to the fullest read more
