Gave it 3 tries. Won't give it anymore. Problems: First, if you're alone, you have to sit at the counter with really uncomfortable chairs because they are 'saving the tables for bigger parties' which conveys to me my limited value to them. A short sighted business approach at best. You can never tell who your most financially supportive customers are based on group size. Second, the food is just okay. The wait time isn't the issue. It's the hardness of the toast, the average eggs, the nothing special home fries which makes it just edible. Third, the entire time I'm sitting at the counter, I get an up close and personal blow by blow of the hostess/owner trashing customers and staff. Her comments are rude. And, the snarl on her face can kill an appetite faster than flies. Forth, when you arrive you're stuck waiting at the door while the staff pretends to not notice you. They'll even talk about you standing there. Charming. So, today when I got there at 1:17pm I waited and waited while one waitress pointed at me and the owner rolled her eyes. She finally came over and said she was closed. Brilliant strategy there. Great business sense, closing to customers at 1:17 when the shop closes at 2pm. Here's a free hint, turn off the open sign and put up the closed sign when you stop seating at 1:17 for 2 pm closing. Interesting, I drove up the street to the Saltwater Diner which also closes at 2pm. They seated and fed me and I was out by 1:55pm. Oh, they seated 4 other tables after me. I heard great things about Toast so I took my family here. The food actually was pretty good, the environment, however, was awful. For reference, my family is Black. Our experience at Toast made us extremely uncomfortable. We received dirty looks from other customers and even staff. Our waitress was extremely cold to us and seemed almost dismissive, and there were customers sporting racist propaganda. I was extremely uncomfortable but did not want to be rude and leave the table before the meal arrived and paying. It is unfortunate that in 2020 my family cannot enjoy a meal at a restaurant just like any other family. The foods good, and the wait staff is pretty good, but the owner is a nasty SOB. We have been many times, and noticed her be rude to several customers. Today, however, she iced it for me. There is only one table that seats 6 people. Another party of 6 arrived just before us. The owner refused to push 2 tables together, even though the place was 1/2 empty. No reason given. If you like your eggs with a side of emotional abuse and passive aggressive hand written signs: go to Toast. My main beef with this place is that it seems two people have opened a breakfast restaurant that have absolutely no desire to run a breakfast restaurant. Last time my mom was here, the owner yelled at a single man who was attempting to walk up to the bar and seat himself. He was dining alone and she humiliated him in front of a restaurant full of people. He left. Last time my best friend was here she was in the middle of eating her breakfast at the bar, reading a book, again halfway through her meal, and the owner's sister- who also works the floor- said "you need to move, so I can put these two seats together." Last time I ate here, my boyfriend and I waited 45 minutes for our breakfast to arrive and the whites of his eggs were raw. Absolutely disgusting. I "get" breakfast waitressing with a side of sass, sometimes it's necessary, and it can be done. But if you're going to hit me with a tough face before I've had coffee, you better have the service and food to back it up (to see this done well go see Dee at Arthur and Pat's). Toast has neither. There are two waitresses here that are very sweet, they should think about going elsewhere for their tips. Don't waste your time. You're better off getting mediocre food and good bloody marys at Stars. Your breakfast will be out fast and you probably won't be humiliated by anyone in public. Okay brunch. Good portion size but quality was just meh. I stopped by with a friend early on a Saturday morning for brunch, and I ordered the pumpkin pancakes as my meal, along with iced coffee. The pumpkin pancakes were enormous, but unfortunately it was kind of dry and not particularly flavorful. It was pretty busy, so maybe I ordered the wrong dish, but I only ate about one pancake before the dryness became a bit much. It's not terribly expensive, but the service and venue aren't anything to write home about. It would work for brunch for smaller groups, but I didn't find the food good enough worth coming back for. read more

We have been here multiple times because it is close and the food is decent. We stopped going in to eat because the the old lady hostess (possibly the owner?) was very rude. for us middle aged folk she acts very uncaring, and to the younger crowd she is nasty (Talking down to them, telling them to hurry up, etc...). Anyway, we have been calling in togo orders every no and again when we don't feel like cooking on weekends. Today i called and was told very rudely that they are too busy to take togo orders anymore. I wish that you could rate the food and service separately. The food would get five stars - hands down - and that's the only thing that keeps me going back (far less frequently in the last five years). The deplorable service and excessive wait for the food is asinine and would rate maybe 1 1/2 stars. I don't need the server/owner to be my new best friend, or even offer oodles pleasantries (esp if they're fake)...but please check on the coffee/offer refill and ask how the food is. Our server today was in her early twenties and couldn't have cared less. Once she took our order she didn't stop by our table until after I asked the other server who brought our food for a refill and the check. She also appeared stressed, running around trying to tie up loose ends for multiple tables. Bottom line: I wish the wait for the food wasn't so long, but it comes out hot and fresh and delicious - so as annoyed as I am when I get served, two bites into it, I forgive (not forget) the irritation. HOWEVER... The service just sucks and contradicts all that is so great about Toast. read more

To the smooth-as-silk service that refuses to pour steaming hot coffee in a mug you're holding because "they can't afford a lawsuit right now." To the White Omelette: chicken sausage, fresh mozzarella and brilliantly green baby spinach pouched perfectly in a crescent of egg whites. Two buttered pieces of wheat toast and a scoop of herbed hash browns for a reasonable $8.50. To the Burnt Toast: a crème brûlée spin on the classic battered bread dish, French toast has never been this... crispy. Real maple syrup on the side! To the complaints of shoddy attitudes and gritty callousness, we bore no witness to such vices. To the slight slick of oil the allegedly healthy om slid around in, we could have done without ya. This is the worst place. Don't go here. We went there yesterday for breakfast and didnt have to wait long to ne seated....it went completely down hill from there. First we were seated and waited for over 15 minutes to get a coffee and then our waitress was no where to be found...a half hour went by before she took our order and almost an hour went by before we got our food...she kept on disappearing meanwhile the guy waiter had at least 3 or 4 patrons in and out. The food was ok. No complaints there, but the woman who served us was incredibly rude. My wife and I were seated at a small two person table which was ok but my wife hates to leave her handbag on the floor and I had my camera and hat so I took a chair from a nearby table to set our stuff on. The woman then asked if we had another guest...well..no. I was then chastised so badly for taking another chair that I returned it and put my hat and camera on the tiny table so that she would not have a fit because she obviously very annoyed and upset. Next I ordered the veggie omelette, but I can't eat bell peppers so I asked if I could have tomatoes instead...nope..no substitutes! Why? Tomatoes are more expensive was her rational. Man. It must be really horrible to live in a place where veggies are so rare and tomatoes are vastly more expensive than peppers because this woman was incredibly grouchy about it. Oddly, it seems the locals who come in are treated much friendlier. That's fine. I know where I am welcome and where I am not. I will spend my money elsewhere. Would love to give a proper review but they were closed on a Sunday, 25 mins before closing time with a restaurant half full. Don't know why they were closed as they posted a !huge! CLOSED sign in the front entrance, prohibiting entrance. At least give customers the chance to get a "sorry we're closed early" when they come in the door. Obviously they don't care if they turn away customers early and w/o explanation. I will NEVER return to a restaurant that does not hold to hours or give explanations. Negatives: I don't get up early enough to eat here on weekends, it's pretty small and popular and I drank too much the previous night. The staff can be a little salty, but that's probably because they hate you. I do too, you are the reason I can't get a table. Positives: The food is great. All of it, from the shredded hash browns to the silver dollar pancakes, the omelettes and my girlfriend looooooves the burnt toast. Often times they serve an extra little carafe so you can top off your coffee. Fortunately I work from home often and we can hit them up on weekdays. After reading more negative reviews pertaining to what some consider to be rude service here, I have to reiterate that I come here all the time, and I've never experienced this type of rude service that gets talked about. I don't think the negative commenters are lying. All I'm saying is that I've always experienced, I wouldn't call it perky, but rather real, straight, friendly service, as in they'll treat you the way you treat them. The owners and employees are Hullonians to the core. Straight-shootin' and a little salty (just like our town), but at their core, some of the nicest people you'll ever meet. I get the sense that many people who aren't used to that kind of personality mistake it for being rude. But just like the kitschy signs posted all over the restaurant, the people who work here will tell you what's on their mind, with a little bit of small town, old time charm thrown into the mix. My husband and I wanted a new adventure, so we decided to go to Nantasket Beach for the day, but first we needed some fuel for all that beach walking, so I researched breakfast places nearby and found Toast on Yelp. Sure glad I did. The service was excellent. After waiting outside for ten minutes for a table, we were seated and immediately approached for our beverage choices. I had the world's strongest coffee (thank God for all the "comfort stations" on the beach, LOL), and my husband got a lovely selection of teas to choose from. Our orders arrived quickly and piping hot. The omelets come with hash browns rather than home fries. OMG, glad I do not live near this place. I would gain 100 pounds. The vegetarian omelet I had was huge, fluffy and perfectly done. I could have eaten an entire vat of the hash browns. Plenty of toast selections. Divine. Even the bathrom was fun. They have all these quirky decorations and books for that after breakfast break. Another thing to note is they have a lot of vegetarian options for those of us who have sworn off the dead stuff. Ok. So my brother and I finished up a meeting. He says, you want to grab coffee, or breakfast. I say, breakfast. It's 9:30, but breakfast doesn't take long, right? So we sit at the counter and get coffee. Good coffee. Some time later, the waitress takes our orders, and the owner swings by with a cute carafe of coffee, says "some more coffee" and glides away. That was a nice touch, but the service was SLOW. I think it was about 15+ minutes before the food came AND THERE WERE TWO COOKS IN THE KITCHEN! The place was 1/3 full (only one table of 4 other than we didn't have food. The food was good, however. The hashbrowns had a unique flavor, kind of sweet. I tried the hash....meh, but truly good hash is very hard to find. Coffee was delish. But man, it was S.L.O.W. We gave the waitress a fine tip, as the kitchen's faults were not hers. I had originally posted this a 2 stars, but I think 3 is more accurate. I think Taste is worth a visit. I cannot believe the kitchen would be that slow all the time. read more

With breakfast being my favorite meal, I cycle through my favorite places, depending on my favorite dishes at each place. I would love to say I have tried every item on the menu, however, I am so in love with the Wave breakfast, that is my go to order!( more on the food later) If you are not directed to the location, it is easy to drive right by. Housed in the bottom level of a brick condo tower, it is unassuming, but a great location across from Nantasket Beach. The space itself seats about 25, with tables and a bar. It has a funky eclectic vibe with "No cellphones, and no whining" signs. Th owner is a straight shooter, and a hard worker, and it really seems like a family I have been going for awhile and the waiters/ waitresses have all been consistent. I will say that she can be a bit curt and you would think she would be nicer to her followers, maybe she isn't huge on the fact people are coming from outside of Hull to eat here? If you go on the weekend, expect to wait- I have noticed food is coming out quicker in the past six months, but give yourself an hour minimum. In the winter hop in to give your name, and then wait in your car because there is nowhere to wait outside, or sit, and in the winter it is very cold! A bench outside would be a welcome addition! The food is excellent, I always get the Wave, which is 2 small silver dollar pancakes, eggs, choice of meat, and the BEST home fries (shredded style) I have tried their omelettes which are good but the way they price them does not make sense and after spending almost $12 I stopped ordering them. Also the fruit cups are not the best, it seems like there is canned fruit used for part of it... All in all Toast is a great addition to Hull- a family friendly, all age appropriate amazing breakfast place, I just need to try it for lunch now! I've loved Toast for years, but never have written a review on it. After reading the thumbs-down reviews here, though, I'm jumping to their defense. I always feel that the gripes people have are real (to varying degrees) to them: you may have waited a while, you may have got the side-eye, your food may not have been delivered to your table within 10 minutes, and the horn-0-plenty skew to the decorations may not be to your liking. I get it. These complaints are the same issues anyone would face at any other restaurant, for breakfast lunch or dinner. I really do get it. What I also get is that Toast is an independent, local, spotlessly-clean, and delicious place to get a scrummy breakfast for people near & far. Having never experienced unwelcoming service here, I cannot comment on that. I can say that I've had genuinely courteous service and that my coffee cup is always kept full. The food is truly top-drawer breakfast and lunch fare, and the prices are exactly what I would expect for food of this extra-deliciousness. I cannot say that your bad experience wasn't real for you, and maybe I'm just a diner who doesn't expect to go to breakfast and have a white-tablecloth-experience, but I have only glowing things to say about Toast. Breakfast is my fave meal of the day, and I'd rather go out for a tazzzdy breakfast than lunch or dinner. And because of that, I cannot recommend Toast highly enough. PS. That VIEW is just bonkers! Went there last Saturday around 11:00 am- had to wait about 15 minutes to get seated. I read the reviews here beforehand, but really don't see the big deal. The signs are obviously in good fun and the food is awesome! We had the multigrain pancakes with pecans and blueberries and the cape cod hash browns. YUM! Portions are a good size- we ate it all and we're full but not gonna die. We sat at the bar and chatted with Audrey, the owner. She was really friendly and kept our coffee cups filled. Then one person from my party got up to go to the bathroom and a waitress can over and told us we had to go even though we were finishing up our coffee. We had two fine breakfasts here during our off-season stay. The "fresh-squeezed orange juice" is fresh. The cinnamon fire toast is delicious as are the flavorful hash browns. We went early so we didn't wait at all. I got the salmon Benedict, if you like Benny's you'll love this. The salmon is a lighter smoked salmon which compliments the hollandaise and capers magically. First time visit to Toast today. A+ Friendly service, cute/kitschy atmosphere, fantastic breakfast food. Good coffee. Many vegetarian options!! Soy sausage patties, garden burger on the lunch menu, multiple egg sandwiches and omelets with no meat - thanks, Toast! We appreciate that you have these things on the menu. Also, the bathroom is adorned with fun posters and old pictures of Paragon Park. We ordered a mediterranean omelet and a breakfast burrito with eggs and pepper jack cheese. Both were delicious! I'm noticing some of the more critical reviews are about wait times **in the summer**, or perceived "rudeness" of waitstaff. Really, Yelpers?? It's a popular breakfast spot on Nantasket Beach - do you really expect to NOT wait in the summer? I don't care if you have your children, your grandparents, your inlaws, whatever - use a little common sense! If you're not prepared to wait, go to IHOP in Quincy or something. As for rudeness...I didn't see any rudeness at all this morning. Very matter-of-fact, businesslike maybe, but not rude. The laughable, vicious exchange quoted in one review makes me wonder about the person who wrote it, not about the owners of the restaurant.
