I really liked this place. It's a neighborhood restaurant situated in a residential area. We came here with our pooch so we were served by the outside dining area. Several other diners came in with their pooches so it was a very dog friendly atmosphere. My order consisted of a bloody mary, and their brunch special which was pulled pork with a poached egg over a bed of roasted potatoes. It was quite delicious. The staff here was great. We had to wait about 15 to 20 minutes to get a table for five of us. While we waited we had free coffee and a chance to peruse the menu. We all had drinks, I had their version of a Irish coffee called P. McGinty. Based on the reviews from the rest of the group the Mamosa and bloody Mary were excellent as well. I would highly recommend the P. McGinty though. I chose one of their eggs Benedict, it was amazing. My buddy had the French toast it comes with bacon so it's really the best of both worlds. He said it was amazing. Two other people got a scramble/biscuits and gravy mix which they said was awesome as well. We have come in a few times and always have something different. It's great because their menu changes with the seasonal availability of produce. Honestly, I would make a recommendation as to what to try... but it's all great! The building is small, and they certainly squeeze in as many people as they can. There is almost always a wait on weekends, so if you want to know how long the wait will be, give them a call before heading down. And if you want a little hair of the dog, or to add a little pep in your morning brunch they have a drink menu as well. There are those mornings where all you need is some good, solid, healing food. You know those mornings. You feel as though life has kicked you in the back of the head (repeatedly), possibly kneed you in the gut, and definitely at least slapped you across the face a few times. On these dreadful mornings, just about anything will do, as long as it's got some protein, a healthy dose of carbs, and at least a little grease. And coffee... lots of coffee. These are the days that we'll settle for anything as long as it's quick and it quiets the grumbling beast inside and greases the skids. It was on such a morning that I stumbled upon Toast, a little unassuming neighborhood cafe on 52nd and Woodstock. Not only did it deliver exactly what I was looking for, but it gave me much, much more. The menu is a mish-mash of creative inventions (sweet onion tart with poached egg and hollandaise sace on top), standards (french toast), and dishes you wouldn't normally see on a breakfast menu (a breakfast club sandwich). The signature dishes, of course, revolve around the house-made thick-cut white bread toast. This morning I opted for the blue plate special, pulled pork shoulder braised in a slightly spicy sauce piled high on a thick-cut piece of white toast and topped by a pached egg. This came with a rosti (a little round hash brown cake). The pork was deliciously seasoned and the combo of swine, egg, and bread was a godsend to my roiled and hurting stomach. My dining companions Ryan H ordered the French Toast (what one would expect to be a somewhat signature dish), and it was decent but not great. The slices were thick, grilled then baked, but the flavor was less than "amazing". His toast came with bacon and some fruit. The highlight of the meal was probably the blueberry muffin I started with. It was a house made muffin that was tasty in it's own right, but when cut in half and grilled to a golden brown with a little butter on the flat iron, it was nothing short of stellar. One bite and the deal was sealed. Grilled muffins are THE way to go. Yum. As should be the case with all diner-style establishments, the coffee is strong and black. It's from some local roaster, which I appreciate, but still not as good as the thick, deep flavors of stumptown. The breakfast bloodies and spritzers looked divine, and even though some hair-o-the-dog would have been a cure-all for my mid-morning hurtin', I opted to try the good ol' fashioned cure - time, food, and rest. The service was top-notch. All friendly, all welcoming, all smiles. In fact, when the owner noticed that the pork on my order wasn't piled as high as the others coming out of the kitchen he, without asking, had another helping of the braised meat delivered up to me, just to make it complete. I had to ask why he was just handing me more food... That's what I call customer service. :) All in all, I was very impressed with my food, but not quite as enthralled with the French Toast. It was good, but not stellar. For that reason alone, I am holding off on anything more than 4-stars until I have sampled some more of the menu. Good stuff, this Toast. Interesting, most of the Yelp reviews for Toast are for the breakfast/brunch. We wondered if that meant that people didn't really come here for dinner. True, only one other party was here when we arrived last night. But, we were VERY glad that we came here for (a reasonably priced!) dinner. We liked that the menu was straight forward, with menu items simply titled "gnocchi" or "lamb" or "chicken". The food (including presentation) was fabulous all the way around. The onion and garlic soup of the day with potato puree was delicious. Despite the "onion and garlic" name, it was only lightly seasoned and perfectly salted. For drinks, JP had a pale ale, and I did the unheard of thing (for me) of ordering a glass of wine (Syrah). JP liked his ale, but I thought it was offputtingly pungent, tasting like a fusion of leather and apricot. My Syrah was good (I guess it was all right, though I don't know a damn thing about wines). However, the glass the wine came in was huge, and I could just about stick my head into the glass. We ordered the lamb and the chicken. The lamb was outstanding, very tender as if it has been roasted. It had a robust, but not muttony, flavor. Along with the lamb came perfectly cooked baby carrots and greens. The chicken was excellent too. It came with greens resting atop an out-of-this-world-wonderful buttery potato puree. For dessert we tried the strawberry shortcake recommended by our waitress. It came with two cupcake-shaped shortcakes, rhubarb and strawberries, topped with crème fraiche and a sprinkling of powdered sugar. Best strawberry shortcake I have ever had!!! Located walking distance to where I stayed, this looked cute and promising! It wasn't bad, but I wasn't incredibly impressed. It probably gets a 3.4 in my books. Small, diner-like with big open windows to make it bright, it was intimidate and could only hold so many tables with an extra back room. Mine came with bacon and I'm surprised they didn't have a meat substitute, but the waitress asked if my friend wanted to eat the bacon...that's something I usually ask for, but I had this weird hint that she was into him. NBD to me, but she was a bit offstandish to me and yet really really nice to him. Soooo funny. Has little to do with the review, though. Well, maybe. My sandwich was oook. The bread was similar to Texas toast - thick and light, but I don't really like that. And the fried eggs just seemed semi cooked over easy. And it was really over easy...still lots of egg white that hadn't changed properties and become actually white (still clear). When I read fried egg, I expect the egg to be fried and crisp on the outside with a good egg porn action when you cut into the yolk. But hey, eggs are hard to cook correctly... The sandwich was fine. Had arugula and egg and this Rosti potato cake on the side. It's a German/Swiss thing and almost like a latke. I liked it but it wasn't flavorful enough for me, so I added ketchup. So we came in at 9AM on a Sunday to try to beat the crowd. When we got in, it was definitely empty and we got seated right away. After we finished breakfast though around 10ish it was definitely fully packed. The staff was friendly and their premium non alcoholic juice drinks were very good. I was just not that impressed with the food. We got the: 1. Mac and Cheese with a side salad. The salad had no dressing so it was just greens. The Mac and Cheese was ok. It didn't have much flavor. 2. Belly - Slab of Pork belly with a duck egg on top of slaw and some sort of puree. The slab of pork belly was really good. But the puree threw me off. It was like a sweetish hummus taste and didn't match well with the belly. Portion was also tiny so if you are starving keep that in mind. Overall, I just wasn't that impressed with the food. Yep, its Friday...well...its Saturday now...but when I went to Toast it was Friday. The company I work for seems to hate me...they schedule me to close but have meetings at 8am.. *sigh* I thought to myself... "where can I grab a bite to eat after the meeting and before work??" In my 2009 commitment to better myself, I have decided when I eat out ..it has to be some place new. So I busted out my Eat, Shop, Portland guide and decided on Toast. I have driven by it several times and the name is just so to the point and cute that I swore i would go ...and let me tell you, I wish it had not taken me so long to take my first steps into Toast. Right off the bat, we were greeted with a smile and you could feel the calm passion in the place. The staff was dressed like themselves. The place was super clean and the decor was on point...sexy sunday brunch lakeside kinda feeling... A gentleman in a Nebraska shirt asked it wanted a table or the bar.. of course we took the bar. Sitting at the bar or counter is the best place...you catch all the action...and can really get a good vibe... Turns out the man in the Nebraska shirt was named Don. I am assuming he is one of the owners...but I could be wrong. I assume due to the fire in his eyes and the excitement in his voice about his food. I ordered these sausage and eg slider things that were just lovely... the boyfriend got one of the specials... I think it was called Everything Nebraska Matters not...the food was great ..and I learned some great things about how they make their food. Most of their stuff comes from local farmers they have made relationships with...thats one thing I think people dont get...it pays to form connections and keep them...it is one of the greatest gifts we have in life...connections... They bake all their own bread and have a 20+ ingredient bloody marry. I was watching Don throw it together..man it looked insane!! It was beautiful. There was no yelling in the kitchen. Everyone just did their jobs...everyone was handsome ...so that did not hurt.... So Benny choices with the potato rosti! My boyfriend and I visited Portland and Toast was one of our favorite spots. We had to wait a little longer on the weekend but it was worth every minute of the wait. Food came out quickly, our waitress was a wonderful older woman. My husband and I love coming here. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. The location is conveniently located and fairly large, if there isn't seating inside you can sit outside. I've tried almost everything on their menu. The bread pudding is the best if you need something small but delicious. If you want something hardy but somewhat healthy, go for the golden pig. But if you want something sweet then check out the French toast, it comes with an in-house made orange whipped cream with some delicious bacon. I'm not a drinker but everyone there seems to like their morning cocktails and such. I prefer just a blood orange San pelgrino myself. Lol. Always check for their specials, the biscuits and gravy is delicious and not on the main menu. We decided to try something new and none of us had been to Toast before--we have driven by it all the time and it has good reviews. We planned to meet up at 11am for Sunday brunch. There were groups of people outside waiting when I arrived. Surprisingly, it only took 15 minutes or so for a table to become available. Your whole party as to be present to be seated but they ended up seating us and the last person came a couple minutes later. My friends had coffee and I ordered a Conscious. I don't know why it took awhile for my drink to come out, I had to remind the server when she took our food orders. Ordered two of the Bad Ass Sandwich, one with bacon and the other with sausage, and the Not So Dismal. I had the Bad Ass Sandwich and I was disappointed. The sandwich is served between two thick slices of white toast. That's cute, Toast serving toast. It was so dry and the bread cut my mouth a little. I ended up deconstructing my sandwich to make it palatable. The sausage wasn't very flavorful and I was questioning if they forgot the goat milk cheese because I was expecting a tangy flavor. Some acid or that tang was needed to break up the heaviness of all the components. Overall, dry and needed some kind of sauce because the egg yolk was not enough moisture. Potato Rosti was the opposite, oily and soggy. I was talking to a co-worker about it and he commented "there is something off about it." I agree, the atmosphere and food wasn't quite there for me. I get the feeling they are trying a bit too hard to be something they're not, and not putting enough time into their customer service. I had heard great things about this place (albeit a ways away from my neck of the woods) so when a friend recommended it for brunch I was all over it. Arriving just before 10AM on a Sunday, we did have a wait, but not a long one (15 minutes)? Like many popular breakfast spots, they have self serve coffee for your wait. However the waiting lounge is quite small so we and many others waited outside in the rainy cold - at least there was a covered bench! We were finally seated at the bar to friendly service. Starting off with the special of the night, my friend ordered what might be the most epic bloody mary i've ever seen - complete with a giant dill pickle on the side. I'm not a fan of bloody mary's personally, so I tried a tangerine fizz which was quite delicious. Reminiscent of one of my favorite breakfast spots, Zell's Cafe, we were greeted with two small biscuits upon seating - always a lovely little extra especially at popular places like this with long waits - but the mini scones at zells are a much tastier bite, in my opinion, Waffling between the Go Home Thomas and a Bad Ass Sandwich, my friend ordered the former and I ordered the Bad Ass. When they came out, I was pretty happy with my choice - it definitely looked more appealing and while both tasted good, I think the Bad Ass would win in the breakfast sandwich battle (man, I would love to see that go down after a few more tangerine fizzes). ANYWAY, the portions are large, the service is great, and the food tasted good. My friend got the Go Home Thomas - a fancy version of the classic breakfast sandwich. The Croque Monsier was stellar!! It also came accompanied with a yummy green salad. Everything was executed to perfection: the ham was thinly sliced and stacked, the gruyere was melted perfectly, eggs perfectly sunny side up, and the mornay sauce was thick and decedent! My friend loved her sandwich which featured two scrambled eggs, house ground sausage, a house made English muffin, and greens! On the side was what they call a potato rosti - which seemed like a cross between hash browns and a latke. She loved it! I really enjoy and appreciate when a place takes the extra effort to make most of their stuff in house and uses local ingredients too. This review is long overdue. Toast is hands down my favourite brunch spot in PDX. Let me tell you, it is small and mighty! Recently (the last two years or so), I've become and avid bruncher (yes, this is a thing) and I've gone back so many times I've tried everything on the menu and have started to tell my server to just, "surprise me". And when I say I've NEVER been disappointed, I mean it. From the wait (usually about fifteen minutes) I can tell that I'm not the only one with an affinity for this quaint breakfast spot. One of my favourite things about Toast is probably the daily 'Blue plate special'. I've been wowed by the meals on the board numerous times. Not only does the board feature meal specials but there is usually a delicious pastry they'll give you a sample of the minute you sit down (I usually take one to go). The staff is really friendly and they're always down to answer any questions you may have. I took a friend today, he ordered the, Go Home Thomas, after his meal he exclaimed, "best breakfast sandwich I've ever had, hands down." Needless to say, we'll be back. Very creative menu, went with the Not dismal; once I figured out how to eat it (lettuce over eggs over ground beef with cheese on toast--yummy layers. Also really enjoyed the rosti. Tried this place for the first time while visiting Portland. My boyfriend had suggested it when he found on Yelp. Both of us ordered eggs benedict with ham. Came with potatoes. I also got a cup of coffee plus he got some fancy juice drink. The meal was so so. The hollandaise sauce was homemade I believe but it wasn't really flavorful. The eggs were perfectly poached which is ideal but overall I would say the meal didn't have too much taste. Our waitress was a sweetheart so that wasn't an issue. But our meal cost us nearly 50$ to me which seems outrageous for the quality of the food we received. I can pay half the price of that to go to Pine State Biscuits. Had the "not so dismal" cause I'm a sucker for anything hangar steak. Add the white cheddar and I'm sold. Having said that, I needed to add salt and hot sauce and ketchup. As a non-beef/pork eater, I had hoped for a chicken sausage option, or something to rival the protein powerhouses that were on my friends' plates. At any rate, there are lots of lovely homemade touches on the menu--buttery, delicate biscuits as layered as a deck of cards, flavorful homemade berry jam, peppery garden greens. Beware, there are no pancakes on the menu. Service was a bit slow (we waited for over 45 minutes for our breakfast when others seated after us were served and cleared before us). This is a great little breakfast/ brunch spot. I met a friend of mine here for breakfast, initially because it was equidistant to our houses. We sat outside and loved it. I ordered the french toast which came with two big pieces of bacon, fresh berries and just enough syrup. The price was about $1 too much for breakfast- but I'm very stingy! I had the pleasure of visiting Toast early this morning and had a wonderful experience. I hadn't really read reviews prior, though doing that now I find a lot I'm in agreement with. First of all, I thought the service was quite good. We were not seated in what you might describe as a prominent place within the restaurant but nevertheless we were visited often and very much taken care of. Coffee refills were given so liberally, desires didn't need to be verbalized and we never found ourselves without. Before even seeing the food, one must comment on the menu. It isn't an everyday type of menu, filled with your typical, bland offerings often over-described as comfort food. There are some really creative combinations and tasty-sounding plates, though I will agree that these are high prices. I admittedly will not come often due to that fact alone. I tried the french toast, eggs, and the "Rain Man" dish. All were good. The french toast was underwhelming, I will admit. It was delicious, but there was little to distinguish it in a sea of french toast offerings. I did like the syrup and definitely appreciated the bacon. The "Rain Man" was truly satisfying. The mix of braised greens and grilled veggies was filling and begging to be given the hot-sauce treatment. The baked egg on top was nice, almost too little really. I didn't notice the cheese and to be honest, I wouldn't choose parm cheese for these, but a nice goat cheese instead. The dish reminded me a bit of Trinket. I look forward to trying more of what the menu describes and I hope its more of the "rain man"-type tastiness and not the unoriginal french toast type of direction. If one can tolerate the steep prices, it's worth trying. Recommended. read more

Really good food and service! The place is really nice and clean, really like the art decoration. The staff is super friendly and they go the extra mile to make sure you have everything you need. The food was really good, fresh and great use of herbs and vegetables. They also have a carrot/ habanero sauce that is delicious, be aware it is spicy. read more
