Came across this gem while looking for a vegan restaurant. Stopped in on a rainy Saturday in Savannah and the first person I met was Megan. She was welcoming, charming and very helpful. I love me a good grilled cheese sandwich, cheese on toast, anything with melted gooey cheese, I'm here for it. I perused the menu for a hot minute, before landing on the Three Cheese (cheddar, gouda, swiss) grilled cheese sandwich which comes with a slice of pickle and chips. While I waited for the grilled masterpiece to arrive, Megan made me a perfect gin & tonic. The restaurant has a very modern and cool decor. The only weird thing I can say about this restaurant is that it's attached to a hotel and the toilets are a bit of a trek which takes you to the hotel lobby. Other than that, it's worth the effort of getting there and getting yourself toasted. This is such an easy easy thing and you can't even be bothered to do it right. The rest of it wasn't even any better. We had such a fun time here! We arrived mid-Saturday afternoon. The menu listed on the door advertised a bourbon tasting, so we decided to try one, since we had never had one before! We tried 2 different bourbon tastings-one local one and another one. We sat at the bar, which was great. There wasn't really anyone else in the restaurant at the time, so we took our time and enjoyed everything. The bartender poured both of our flights, and then left the bottles behind each glass, so we could remember which one was which. There was also a glass of ice, to use as you wished. I really enjoyed learning about the bourbons, and I especially loved the local tasting. We decided to grab some food, since we were drinking. I'm not sure if this is the first review of this place or not. I could just be inexpert at finding stuff on Yelp. Thomas Cizsak is the Food & Beverage honcho for Island Hospitality Management which runs the Springhill Suites that Toasted Barrel is situated in. He decided that this space would be "sophisticated Southern with a gritty dark urban flair." That might be world renowned chef talk for serves drinks in a dark room with swept floors and clean glasses. Oh, and shoes and shirt required. Not sure what's gritty about grilled cheese sandwiches or if tater tots have that dark urban flair they're looking for, but I surely did enjoy the Wall O' Bourbon. There's some flair there, I think. I started with a Sazerac and I'm glad I did. It's a friendly drink and declares, I hope, that one is amenable to most anything--traditional, sweet, with the right amount of bar sitting bonhomie. Jordan, our peripatetic bartender, knew her wall and its stories. One of her faves is Widow Jane's Bourbon which is proofed with water from limestone caves. She even had pics of the caves on her phone. I spied a bottle of Whistlepig Rye on the shelf and Jordan was the one to tell me that Dave Pickerell, master distiller for Makers Mark and Whistlepig had died just the day before. A raised glass of that man's finest to his worthwhile life. I guess if Dave's obit can say He Made Great Bourbon, mine might eventually say, He Drank Great Bourbon. Impossibly, Whitney Houston was playing. Then Shirley Bassey's History Repeating song with the Propellerheads. That might be sophisticated. Might be urban. Definitely had flair. My Korean Beef with Kimchi grilled cheddar cheese sandwich had lower case kimchi when what I was looking for was ALL CAPS KIMCHI. I sort of wanted to be blown 3 feet off the bar so I could be reeled back in with another of Jordan's bourbons over a baseball sized ice sphere. Where the kimchi underwhelmed the San Marzano Tomato Soup was a revelation. Those maters aren't what's growing in your aunt's backyard. The San Marzano maters are strong and sweet and really, I wanted another cup of soup. It was so filling I had to box up the other half of my Whispered Kimchi sammie. Jordan, our perpetual motion mixologist, presented us her entry for the local bartending competition. I think she called it the Truffle Shuffle. Lord have mercy that girl was a dervish whipping about 15 things together. This is what I remember: --Aperol (I had no idea what this was. I had to look it up. An orange apertif from Italy made from rhubarb and herbs that increase appetite!) --Crushed ice that she crushed with a mallet in a towel. Who does that? --A truffle oil saline solution. I'll let that just sit right there. --Poblano pepper--which I didn't taste at all until it blossomed in my throat about 10 seconds after sipping. It was like sipping twice. --She had a little perfumer bottle that she sprtized over the ice which was mounded in the beveled glass so the aroma was the first sensation, even before drinking. I don't know if Jordan won her competition or not, but she got my vote. Encyclopedic knowledge of anything always impresses me. Hell, she probably knew where the water for the ice was sourced from. So Mr. Cizsak and his bosses at Island Hospitality Management might have a winner here. Remember to take your shades off. Its dark in here remember--with flair. I love trying new places especially when it is a small place. I am truly not a fan of grilled cheese sandwiches but I gave this place a try. The sandwiches came out hot and absolutely delicious. It is a small place so there isn't much sitting unless you can sit on the other side where the hotel is but I am not sure. Like I said the food was delicious. The service was good but at the end I felt like the waitress was pushing us out in a hurry. She may not have meant that way but at the end of the meal we felt rushed. I would differently be because there are several thing still on the menu I would I to try. Maybe I will try the tomato soup next time I do wish they had another soup to choose from but the day we went it was the only option. So if you are in Savannah and need a quick sandwich give this a place a try you won't go wrong. read more

We stayed at Spring Hill hotel so we though we'd try the restaurant in there. Disappointment is the nicest way to describe the experience. We were greeted and sat quickly ...that part was an A+. We ordered a burger and fries and quesadillia and fries along with non-alcohol drinks. after a long wait, thinking it was all fresh made. We got an overcooked dry burger patty, unseasoned, nothing you would want again. Fries were frozen crinkle cut, barely done, unsure if they were microwaved. the quesadillia was loaded with jalepenos but not cheese. we ere asked if we wanted a refill when done and paying. They had music and music bingo going on when we got there but was never offered to participate. Go back again... not if I have a say! read more

Wow! we had a light supper and drinks. I went with a goat cheese and beet salad with a goat cheese, beet, and fig preserves grilled cheese. It was really good but the drinks were Phenomenal. We literally tried ever drink on their mixed drink menu. We went to walk to a local store and on the way back decided to go back and try the last two that we hadn't tried. They were great. We were hoping for a better first experience! Jo (my wife) wanted to try out the Toasted Barrel, as she really likes grilled cheese and wanted to expand her knowledge of whiskeys! The Toasted Barrel seemed to be the right place based on their menu and bourbon selections. When we arrive we had to wait about five minutes to be seated by the bartender who seemed to be the only person working in this small restaurant. She was friendly and seated us and started to explain the menu which is dominated by cheese based sandwiches, but having a selection of salads, appetizers and sides. The sandwiches range from $8-$13 and are served ala carte. She also explained that they were out of three of their four sides (fries, bacon tater tots and their tomato soup) leaving only their red cabbage slaw as an option due to the holiday rush. We adapted with Jo ordering chicken wings as a side and the salmon sandwich, and decided to try the legends bourbon flight. I went with a Caesar salad and their turkey and cheese sandwich with the Boularvardia cocktail. It took a while for our food to arrive as our server/bartender kept bar and attended to other tables. We weren't in a rush and she did come by to check on us and tell us our food order getting close. It did arrive a little while later but we did have our drinks to occupy us. My wife's bourbon flight was a three 3/4 ounce served in a whiskey snifter. These flights range from $14-22. She enjoyed the flights and the serving side seemed to be a good value. My drink made with Makers Mark, Campari and vermouth and was strong flavorful strong. My sandwich was served on Auspicious Bakery bread (a definite plus), with fairly small amount of turkey, sliced Granny Smith apples, Brie cheese and Vidalia onions. I was not impressed other than the bread which was chewy and flavorful. The onions were raw which detracted from the flavor of the sandwich, the Brie was very subtle in taste and there was not enough turkey. My Caesar salad came in a paper cup and was just OK. Jo received 6 wings for her $8 replacement and her salmon, Brie, avocado and dill Sandwich was not outstanding either. Food 3 Auspicious Bread makes a great start for a sandwich but it quickly fell down from there as nothing rave about. Salad and wings standard. Beverages 4.5 Good, potent flavorful and nice selection. The flight was served in the correct glasses and quantity was good. Atmosphere 4 Modern flair with creative menus mounted in wooden boards. Service 3 There was only one person taking care of bar and tables. Not sure if there was anyone one in the kitchen and serving pace was slow. The bartender I will say did hustle around trying to keep up with a rather light crowd. Price 2/4 I think the sandwiches are over priced for rather disappointing food fare. This coupled with the lack of availability of basic sides (no fries???) and sandwiches are ala carte. The alcoholic beverages on the other hand were priced right and potent. Our meal with drinks was on the expensive side. Overall 3 I may try them again for one of their happy hour specials. For example - On Sundays they have bottomless mimosas and Bloody Marys with a sandwich for $25 (2 hr. limit). The food though is wanting so I kind of doubt it. read more

Visiting Savannah we found this nice place up eat. It is a mixed of sport bar with a family environment and still good for a date. Not loud, nice music playing in the background. The staff is superb! We were staying at the hotel and we needed to grab a quick bite to eat before heading out. We were in a rush and the waitress was very accommodating for us, bringing out our meals when they were ready and bringing us our checks ASAP. She was the only one working so this was really amazing of her. Additionally, because we were there for a bachelorette party, we got a free bottle of champagne! This was a nice added bonus. The food was pretty good, kind of hard to mess up grilled cheese. But the sweet potato chips were very delicious, and something new I've never had before! I got the beet salad and the maple bacon and gouda; Mike got the chicken pesto. Both were excellent choices as far as flavor goes. The only complaint I would have is that the bread was SO HARD it cuts your lips, literally. To bite a piece off reminded me of a dog trying to rip a ball out of your hand when you are still holding on to it to tease the dog. I love whiskey: bourbon, rye, Irish, Canadian, etc. I am also a big fan of grilled cheese just about any way you can make it. So when I heard about Toasted Barrel opening, I was pretty sure it was going to be great. I also heard from a few friends who had tried it out, that it was pretty good. And it is pretty good, but I do not think it's great. . . at least, not yet. There is potential that is not being realized at this point. First, the venue lacks ambiance. There is nothing about the room that speaks "comfortable or cool or hip or lounge." Mostly hard furniture and surfaces that kind of remind me of the breakfast eating area in a Hampton Inn. It needs something to give it character, personality. . . it needs to be more inviting. When I visited, the music was late 80's, early 90's alternative--which I love--but does not seem appropriate in a bourbon establishment. It was also a bit too loud. The drink offerings on their cocktail list offer creativity in the combination of ingredients, and the bourbon offerings are more than adequate. The Boulevardier was well-made and the featured bacon infused bourbon cocktail with a hint of maple was unique. Grilled cheese offerings are varied, and there are also a few salads and other dishes such as ubiquitous avocado toast. The Three Cheese grilled cheese was good, bread was nicely toasted. And the Bacon Schmelz was even better. A cup of tomato soup had great flavor, but the accompanying croutons were too chewy and the soup needed to be a bit hotter. Overall, not a bad experience at all, but also not a "wow" or a "superb" one either. If the owners can give The Toasted Barrel some character and more of an identity, it could become a 5 star destination. It will be interesting to see what the future holds. read more

Decided to stop into this place after a performance we were in town for. Staff was very friendly. We tried a hot dog with sauerkraut and the nutella toast. Both were delicious! My mom and I stopped here for a quick bite to eat before checking out at Springfield Suites. It was a cute little spot, and our waitress was very friendly. I ordered the avocado toast, being that there was a Thursday special of $2 off anything from their toast selection. It was pretty tasty and same goes for the beet toast as well (I tried a bit of my mom's)! Toasted Barrel? More like Toasted Disappointment. My first clue should have been the fact that this place was close to empty at 6pm on a Saturday night. There was live music which ended up being extremely awkward since nobody was there. Also the musician kept trying to holler people into the restaurant which didn't do anything other than make me cringe. We got some drinks since we knew we would be serenaded for the next 45 mins or so. I felt like this would be the music that the CIA uses to torture criminals. Unfortunately, the drinks were less than impressive. The list of cocktails had more than enough variety, but they just didn't impress me. Yes, it was alcohol, l so I'm going to drink it. With that said, I wouldn't ever go there for drinks even though they have an aesthetically pleasing full bar. They just didn't have much flavor to them, which was just foreshadowing for the food. THE "FOOD". Now this is my biggest issue. The bulk of this menu is gourmet grilled cheese. I was expecting liquid gold to be in between two toasted pieces of delicious bread. WRONG. I ordered one that had brie, caramelized onions, and turkey. The bread on all our sandwiches was pretty much cold wonder bread that might have been toasted for 2 seconds on each side. The only flavor I tasted was regret. The grilled cheese came with a side of STALE chips. I am not the first review to mention these STALE CHIPS. That's my included side? Total rip off. We ordered two additional sides: tomato soup (lukewarm tomato paste) and sweet potato tots (soggy cold balls of mush) Just no. While I was happy to receive the bill to escape the desperate musician, I was shocked to see $60. That's just overpriced for what tasted like wonder bread. read more

We came into Toasted and we were very warmly welcomed by Megan the bartender. We love Savannah and come every year for all the amazing friendly people and the most exciting restaurant scene in the south!!! My husband had the grilled Ham, guyere cheese, with whole grain mustard with some hand cut fries and some sweet potato chips...he really enjoyed it! My sandwich was specially decided for me from the owner because I'm so so so picky...he said I should have goat cheese (one of my favorites!) Fresh tomato and basil pesto...can i say I was delighted and absolutely thrilled with it!!! The bread that they use is from Auspicious Bakery and it too is quite wonderful! I also had some sweet potato chips and a cup of the San Marzano tomato soup that was really good but I think it had a touch too much salt in it for our taste. But I would definitely order it again! Now for dessert Megan made me a very wonderful chocolate martini which was perfect to start off our evening of wandering from one place to another in Savannah. Chef Thomas has hit on the perfect mix: gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches and craft cocktails! He uses as much local fare as possible too. We had the grilled beet and goat cheese sandwich (on Auspicious Bakery's sourdough bread) and the Toast Monsieur. Make sure you try his truffle sweet potato tater tots! Great downtown location too. I've been waiting on a place like this for a while. What could go wrong with a menu full of bourbon and grilled cheese? Nothing! We came in for lunch and had a very hard time deciding. The atmosphere is very laid back and service was great. The Crispy Goat with figs, goat cheese, roasted beets, and balsamic was amazing, I just wish there was more of it! We arrived and the wait was about thirty minutes to get an already open seat at the bar. once at the bar, it was another hour to receive our food. they had one bartender working behind the bar, as hostess, as waitress, and as busboy. the most inefficient shift I've ever seen in my life. once the food arrived, it was a sandwich that I could have made at home and A soup that tasted like Campbell's canned soup.
