Toby's Estate excited the hipster in me, and I had to order one of my usuals: a cappuccino. The friend I was with noticed that they had something called a "Bucky" on display. We had to ask the barista what it was out of curiosity. Apparently, a bucky was something like a Fudgee Bar. It's what you get from a cake, fudge, and brownie threesome. My friend and I bought the original bucky and ate it together with my cappuccino (no need for sugar now!) Though small, Toby's Estate has that calming aura that invites you to pause and sit for a moment. I haven't been there since. I'm hoping to come back again for more of the original buckies!

I've gone back to the big one on Leviste St. several times, and each time it was a good choice. (Try their Dutch Eggs!) This small outlet in Century City Mall's cinema level though has got to be one of the best locations they could have picked for a place like Toby's. Right outside the hallway that leads to the different theaters, it appeals to people like me who, no matter how gripping a movie is, need help in staying awake in a dark, super cozy theater with incredibly comfy seats. So lola of me, i know, but i always grab a cup of extra hot flat white in with me. It's clean white subway-ish tiled walls give off that instantly chic vibe, too, so even if you aren't familiar with Toby's, you'll be drawn in. I promise though, once you've tried their coffee, you won't be able to pass up the chance to have one when it's right there. PS. I ordered a Chai Tea Latte, paid for it. I was served... a green drink... a Matcha Latte. I asked about it. The answer I got was "ah! Wala kaming chai tea latte today. Narinig ko kasi matcha latte. Sorry." And he leaves for the back room. I sit there... trying to figure out what just happened. By myself. I feel bad. Very bad. I got excited to have a chai tea latte. I paid for a chai tea latte. I got a matcha latte instead. I try it anyway. What else was I going to do. The barista was gone. It was bitter, like matcha usually is. But a matcha latte isn't usually that bitter either. It was okay. I've posted on their FB. They've contacted me too. It's good to see there's an effort on their end to make things better. The person I chatted with has apologized for my experience and has made an effort to make it up to me. Hopefully their service does get better. It has the right caffeine punch to keep me awake in the afternoon (to be honest, after lunch carb sleepiness is counterproductive!) The drink itself isn't too sweet and the blend of chocolate and coffee is just right. The cafe's interiors are also very conducive for studying and working. Although sockets for laptops are a bit hard to come by, it's either you seat yourself by the window or on the couches so you can have access to the socket. Also, WiFi is free, but you'll have to like them on Facebook first to be able to access it. Overall, I really like Third Cup Cafe. It's not too expensive and the coffee is really good. The ambiance is also nice for a quick chat with a friend, or if you need to work or study, and if you want to go solo flight and just cozy up with a book.

I usually go for their tea, Italian Soda, or an Iced Americano. When it comes to price, they are more or less at par with the big coffee shops. The good thing with spending in Afters is you support a local brand. The food is generally good. I do find the dishes a bit pricey given that they're in Katipunan, with mostly students as their target market. The only thing that has consistently disappointed me in Afters are their cookies. They're always.... hard. I do wish Afters offered lighter snacks. Something you can easily munch on when you don't want a full meal. Service is always good whenever I'm there. The baristas are nice and friendly too. They do have power outlets around the cafe. Internet is limitted as you get a code from them and depends on your bill too.

Second, while it's right smack in the middle of the sometimes chaotic book store, they have nice little nooks and tables where you can take a few leisurely minutes to browse through your book selection and decide which ones to get (if you're not getting all!). This is a much better spot for bibliophiles than, say, Starbucks in fully booked, in my opinion, for the sheer simplicity of the experience. Next time you happen to be in National, check out Illy Cafe Delizio at the ground floor. You may find yourself staying longer than you thought you had time for.

It wasn't too noisy when I went, so I called a friend from a nearby house and caught up with them, and the Daily Brew Café seemed like a great place to do so. I enjoyed their wintermelon milk tea, but I can't say it stood out very much from other milk tea establishments. My friend got a cappuccino that was brewed well enough and kept me alert.
