Relatively new with an interesting name, Today Food attracted us because of its location in Chinatown, its good ratings, and our love of Xiao Long Bao (XLB). It did have good dumplings, but my misunderstanding of the menu gave us a missed opportunity while in San Francisco. We got a hotel in the Financial district to be close to Chinatown for our 2 night stay. Because we wanted to start our first full day early, we needed a restaurant that opened before lunchtime. "Today Food" fit the bill, and we took a Lyft there. It's a small storefront, with an open kitchen and a few tables to the side, one of which we grabbed for our group of three. The table has ramekins and easy to pour containers of dark soy sauce and chinese vinegar (later, the chef told us proudly that it was 6 month-aged and was good for health/longer life). The menu is a simple one page. First thing I noticed was that the picture for 'soup dumplings' was for dumplings in soup broth. So we switched gears and ordered Chives pancakes ($11.99 for 8 pieces), which came first. They were stuffed with egg along with the chives, and with the crispiness of the thin pancakes, made a great starter for me and my mother-in-law. Also got the steamed shrimp, chive, and egg dumpling ($12.99 for 12 pcs) and organic chicken pot stickers ($9.99 for 6). Both were served hot, and with the self-made vinegar and soy sauce, tasted good. Cans of different sodas are $2.50 each. I walked by this restaurant many times walking in Chinatown and figure I'd give it a try. One of my favorite childhood snacks is the egg and chive pancake. At a steep price of $12.99 it was very disappointing. It's always been more like a big stuffed dumpling, but this was indeed a pancake, and was not filling at all. It was also very oily. Decided to try one of their tea eggs, which was 1.99 for one. Unfortunately, the flavor was just not there. The space as small, the service was relatively quick. I wanted to get a quick light dinner but spending about $18, i was left still hungry. Maybe next time I'll try their dumplings because it's freshly made. From what I gather there are more people who get takeout or their frozen food. There are always ladies in front of the window making dumpling. The dumplings here are always well cooked and have great texture, and they make them so piping hot that it can make the plastic of the sauce container melt if it's packed in the same box as the dumplings lol. Luckily, they've changed that out so it's packed outside of the dumpling container when you order take out. I've also gotten the chive pancake here, and it was pretty good! The eggs were fluffy and they didn't skimp on the chives at all. They make their soy sauce mixture pretty heavy on the vinegar, so keep that in mind if you like it on the saltier end.
