New to the neighborhood and had been meaning to stop by and we finally did! It was after dinner time so I didn't ask about the food in the back - but I hear the sandwiches here are great so I'll probably go for one eventually after I figure out what we can have, if anything. The place has its own ample parking lot and is quite cute. It is small though and has some fresh produce, dairy, and pantry items at the front, but nothing extensive. Having said that, they had bags of allergen-friendly bread crumbs made without eggs (we haven't seen this before anywhere) which I purchased for my kid with multiple food allergies. Towards the middle, there are baked goods.. cookies, cakes, bread, pies. Something to note: everything has a sticker with "Tom The Green Grocer" on them (or other stickers if it's not made there... I'm assuming the items with their sticker means they're made there) but there are no ingredients listed at all. No names either and if there are, it's generic like "assorted cookies" and the pies had the name written on the boxes (peach, forest fruit, mixed berry, blueberry crumble, apple crumble, pumpkin - off the top of my head). I ended up buying a peach pie for just under $25 each. At the back of the store, there are the prepared foods, cake slices, and sandwich counter. My daughter was eyeing the Oreo cake slices but I didn't get one for her on this trip. The slices are not equally sized and wrapped in cellophane; I noticed some are slightly bigger than others. I'm sure I'll get one for her eventually and I'll report back on that once I do. I'm under the impression a lot of people that go there are regulars. The employees there are... there somewhere (they sort of blend in... I didn't really notice a uniform). We weren't greeted when we came in and weren't asked if we needed any help. It might be because they didn't know, since the cash register has the cashier facing away from the door, but as we walked around, it seemed like people became sparse. Service was lackluster and I don't actually recall a smile. Luckily, when I finally grabbed what I was planning on buying, a new employee was manning the cash register. She answered questions with direct answers, no elaboration. I'm still not sure if the answers were adequate, haha. I had asked what was in the Forest Fruit Pie and she mentioned blueberries and strawberries. Then I asked what was in the Wild Berry Pie and she said "berries." I sort of gave up on it after that and just checked out. An intriguing little neighborhood food-centric shop. I wish they listed out the ingredients on all their baked goods and prepared food and they were a little friendlier and helpful. Even so, I'm sure I'll return again to ask my detailed questions to see if we can have any of their sandwiches. Note: the peach pie we got was quite good and yielded 8, decent sized slices. It was glued to the pie pan (I believe the filling bubbled through and got between the pie and the pan) so none of our slices are whole since we need to scrape the bottom out, but they aren't too sweet, the filling doesn't taste artificial, and the crust is nice and flaky/tender. I'm hoping the fact it was stuck to the pan is a one off and they usually aren't like this. The next time I get a craving for pie, I'll go back for round two and I'll be sure to note whether or not that one is stuck to the pan. read more

Limited grocery items. Stopped by once for 3 things but they didn't carry them. Recently asked when the bakery cookies were made before purchasing. Answer was "yesterday" so bought 2 large cookies and 2 blondies all hard as rocks. Deli sandwiches were good but be wary based on other reviews. Seasonal exterior usually super attractive and inviting, but then shopping experience disappointing. Had no idea changed ownership. Always encountered unfriendliness in the past, but maybe that will be different now. read more

I think I've gotten food poisoning from a sandwich that i bought here (tuna sandwich). I tried to give it another shot and found that the sliced tomato's on my sandwich had mold spots on the exterior of the sandwich(number 10) Otherwise the staff here is extremely nice, and the produce is fresh and well maintained. I think they just need to be a little more hygienic and careful when making the sandwiches. I will try again and hopefully see what all the hype is about! read more

Cool little place. Sandwiches in back are awesome. Beware of the cakes in the back. We got a slice of oreo cake, got home and tried it and it was stale as hell. Like tasted weeks old stale. Put it outside and the raccoons wouldnt eat it. The german butter cake was awesome though. Ill be back but will probably skip the cakes. Worth going there just for sandwiches. read more

SUPER cute location. I walked in and felt like I was at a small town gardener's cottage. The inside truly transports you from NJ. I stopped in for a quick bite to eat and was pleasantly surprised at how reasonable the prices were for a meal. The line to get a sandwich was kind of long, but they moved quickly. There's a lot of options and the staff were extremely helpful in giving me advice and bringing me to my decision. I ended up eating the #8, which has Turkey Breast, Sharp Cheddar, Sliced Apple, Creamy Apple Butter, Baby Spinach on Whole Wheat. The sliced apple and apple butter paired perfectly with the meat and spinach. I really enjoyed the sandwich. I also grabbed some jalapeño kettle chips to go with it, which were delicious. They had the perfect amount of seasoning. Overall, I think supporting small businesses like this are great and am glad I stopped in While traveling through the area. Best sandwiches in the area! My family has been going to Toms for years and they have, hands down, the best sandwiches in the area. The sandwiches are super fresh, and have unique ingredients and combinations you won't find anywhere else. My favorites are the #2 and #13. Their prepared food is also delicious and very reasonably priced- I get their chicken cutlets once a week they are delicious! A lovely, rustic fresh produce market and deli. A good variety of fresh fruit and veggies as well as other healthy small food items (olives, chips, dips). The hidden gem is the deli in the back...a good variety of made to order sandwiches to choose from and a wonderful spread of freshly made variety of stuff such as tuna salad, different types of pasta salads, soups, and more. Everything is fresh and really tasty. The downside is it could be a little pricey, particularly the produce. I don't mind paying a little more for the good, fresh made food. My wife and I have been going to Tom's since we moved into the area 26 years ago. They have the best quality fruits and vegetables you can find. Their sandwich shop is second to none and the gourmet section has a wide variety of dishes and delectables to offer. The bakery always has interesting offerings as well. Outside they do a fantastic job with plants and flowers. The entire staff is friendly & eager to please. My wife and I have been regularly shopping at Tom the Green Grocer since moving to the area 5 years ago. Unfortunately, after an incident today, this will end. I just returned from my final visit. I ordered my wife's usual sandwich, a veggie panini "the old way" (they changed their menu a couple years back, but still make the old items upon request). When I got home, i discovered that instead of a panini, they had given me a #19 wrap, not even similar to what i ordered. My wife was disappointed, but decided that it was better to eat the wrong sandwich than wait for me to return to the store to get a replacement. Then she bit into the sandwich, and discovered a foreign object -- a roughly 1-inch long, 1/4-inch thick piece of hard plastic of unknown origin. Naturally, I returned to Tom the Green Grocer with the sandwich and its unexpected contents. I was pretty steamed, but expected based on 5 years going there that they would make it right. I couldn't have been more wrong. I spoke with the owner directly (after waiting nearly 10 minutes to even get his attention). His response to the foreign object was "What the hell is this?" rather than an apology. He promptly threw away both the object and the sandwich, and tasked one of his people to make the replacement. This person, in clarifying what exactly my wife wanted to order, made it clear that he felt I had ordered incorrectly, not that they had made the incorrect order. Throughout the exchange, the very few apologies offered were perfunctory rather than sincere, no apology was even offered for the foreign object, and no compensation of any kind was offered. I will never do business with Tom the Green Grocer again. read more

I'm not sure why there isn't a review for Tom's here, so I feel obligated to give a hat tip to Tom's. I live very close by and I come in about once a week to get my produce and a bit of cheese or a sandwich. It's a small place, but they carry a lot of different products, regional and imported. The deli is stocked and has a nice sandwich menu, too. A decent cheese case and salad case. The desserts are beautiful, but I wish they had more offerings by the slice. For a nice weekday dessert, there's no way we'd finish a whole cake so I often pass. I also never get there in time for the bread. The moral is - I need to get there earlier in the day! The produce is very well selected and arranged and I always find what I am looking for. In case you miss the sign, they do carry herbs, just ask - you end up with a huge bunch of whatever you need. Some things are a little pricey, but I end up throwing less away because it's better quality. Everyone there is very friendly and pleasant and I've made it a pretty staple weekly trip. This is such an adorable little grocery store. I come here mostly for the deli sandwiches--specially the number 13 (cream havarti, watercress, apple slices, cucumber, lemon artichoke spread on multigrain bread) when I want a delicious vegetarian sandwich. I also enjoy treating myself to a bottle of peach lemonade Joe tea, which they carry here. Their produce is a little pricey, and there doesn't seem to be any organic options. They do have a lot of specialty foods here such as sauces, jams, and honey, as well as nuts and chocolate covered dried fruit. Try the dark chocolate-covered pomegranate seeds! They also have a great selection of seasonal plants and flower baskets for your home and garden. read more

I love this little deli/grocer. The sandwich list is unique to most delis in the area: sandwiches include apple butter, Brie, havarti, unique spreads; not your simple sandwich shop ingredients. Everything is so fresh and I'm always happy with my lunch. They have quite a few vegetarian sandwiches and paninis options. I highly recommend the veggie panini. Zucchini, eggplant, basil spread, grilled to deliciousness! I recommend calling ahead if you're in a hurry, as the line gets pretty long around lunch time. The front end of the shop is all produce and specialty items. The employees are always friendly and fast. My only gripe is that they don't deliver. My coworkers and I would order from here multiple times a week if they did. Right now it's just on the occasion when one of us can sneak out to pick it up. read more

My wife showed me this place earlier today for lunch, and I've gotta say -- it REALLY surprised me. I also couldn't believe it hadn't gotten any love on Yelp! A bit hard to spot, the driveway to Tom's is hidden off S. Ave in Scotch Plains. But once you hit it, you see a pumpkin patch and then the main entrance. You walk into a very rustic, old school-type deli. Produce is all over like a farmer's market, but the deli is in the back. Very fresh selections for cuts of meat and sandwiches and wraps. I'm giving TTGG a 3/5 because of two things: the wait time for a wrap/sandwich, and the SIZE. My wife and I ordered two sandwiches, we probably waited close to 15 minutes. The store wasn't packed, maybe 3 people total? A bit too long for that type of traffic, personally. And as if the wait wasn't enough, the SIZE of the sandwiches are WAY too small. for $7, my grilled chicken caesar wrap was MINISCULE. Two-three bites and I was done with each half. Bummer... BUT the food was GOOD, flavorful, and fresh, so definitely check it out for a new experience! read more

This was our first time ordering from here and we will certainly do so again soon! We ordered two sandwiches (roast beef and turkey), two cupcakes, and drinks and were pleased with everything. I was pleasantly surprised that they were stocked with Manhattan Specials! The gentleman who took the order over the phone was patient and thorough as he shared the entire dessert selection with me so that I could make a decision. Minimal-contact pickup was smooth. I mentioned that we were going on a picnic and they included napkins and utensils with the order. We are sandwich snobs recently moved here from Brooklyn (Lioni's on 15th Ave in Bensonhurst was our spot... so we have abnormally high standards for a humble sandwich) and would love to see a breaded chicken cutlet added to the menu, if one isn't already available. I will never shop here again, despite the fact that I had been a pretty decent customer. I bought two plants that died within a couple of weeks, so I went back to try to exchange them. The owner was aggressive and nasty. He screamed at me repeatedly that I killed the plants, told me to "get away," and refused to do anything to rectify the situation. We ended up leaving the dead plants there and leaving as extremely unsatisfied customers. I should note that I am very good with plants and took very good care of these plants - they simply died. I will never again shop in this overpriced snotty little place and none of my friends will either. I have never been treated so poorly by anyone in my life, let alone the owner of a business where I was a costumer. The groceries are better at Kings and the plants are better at Williams - don't bother with this place! read more

This place has fresh flowers and a gourmet grocery store inside - but the best part (and maybe least well known?) are the deli sandwiches in the back.
