I was in town visiting some family and was craving some delicious, but quick Mexican food. I pulled in and there were plenty of cars and the restaurant had plenty of people inside and outside. The two ladies behind the counter were very friendly and did a fantastic job Quickly and efficiently getting through everyone's order without making any mistakes and ensuring a high quality of service. I was very impressed with how well they performed with plenty of individual people and multiple families piling in all at once. The two ladies behind the counter kept their cool, while taking care of the dining room and drive through at the same time. Overall I would happily recommend anyone here for a nice delicious quick bite. I got to enjoy the pork street tacos and a beef empanada which I washed down with an ice cold Modelo. This cool little spot is a solid 10/10. I will be back next time I'm down to see the family in Venice. read more

I get the nachos and tacos and they're awesome. All fresh and prepared the way you want. Sort of like subway. You choose your toppings as you order. They have some of the best nachos I've had and the prices are incredible especially compared to other Mexican restaurants here. read more

Swung in here for a quick bit....ordered 9 hard shelled tacos - 8 ground beef and 1 pork. The server gave us the last of the ground beef that was dry and inedible, you would have though she would have asked for more ground beef but, she didn't so most of our tacos did not have much meat in them and they were gross. The other taco was shredded pork it was good but, not to die for. Definitely, would skip this place if are passing by that way again. $29 was way to much for an unfulfilling meal...there is a McDonald's next door that might be a better option unfortunately! read more

Solid 4 stars Better than chipotle The taco bowl shell is one of the best I have ever had, fried in good clean oil which makes all the difference. The ingredients were fresh and good quality. I will take this over chipotle , it is equally priced and equal in quality . Definitely worth a stop to check out on your road trip read more

Food was good. Got nachos and asked for extra chips. Chips alone were 4$. Felt kind of ripped off considering the nachos were only 6$. I asked the cashier if it was right and she told me that extra chips cost 4$. I left and realized she charged me for two of chips and two sides of salsa that I did not want. They get decent business so it is incomprehensible that after 6 months they still have not fixed their drive through speaker. Employees are not very friendly. I had a very large burrito, 2 tacos and a quesadilla, the front desk girl refused to give me more than 4 small packets of taco sauce unless I paid for them. What a great surprise! Do not let the looks of this place scare you. It was formerly an ice cream drive through. Avoid the McDonald's on corner and just try this local secret. A better copy of Chipolte's and at lower prices. Plus they do not charge for every extra item. (only guacomole is a slight charge). Had three different soft tacos - delicious. Order of preference: pulled pork (cooked for 6 hours); then the seasoned beef; then the steak. I did not try the chicken. but you could have a veggie taco too. Watched them make the burrito and saw the humongous Max Nacho. Must have weighed 3 pounds. Taco Tuesdays are $1.50 fully loaded. Save room for their original churros. Apple was excellent. Choices of over 25 toppings to add to your sandwich, burrito, plate, or taco. Ask for Brandi -- she makes a heck of a taco. And super friendly. Was very disappointed to recently find out that you are using refried beans containing lard. When your employee (who was doing his job and should be commended) told me, it was very surprising and I couldn't help but wonder how long this practice has been in effect. We have been customers since you opened because you personally told us you used nothing but fresh and wholesome ingredients. Soon after I found out about the lard, I called and spoke with your friend to express our disappointment. I told him that if you are not going to use fresh and homemade refried beans, there are many canned refried beans on the market without lard.  I was hoping to hear back by now that you either started making a homemade product or switched to a lardless canned product. Continuing to use beans with lard certainly belies your claim of being "Fresh Mex". I preferred communicating with you directly, instead of placing a negative review on Yelp but your Contact link at website returned this message and is not working.  I am also hoping you will remedy this situation ASAP, so we can resume being regular customers again. read more

Just raised their prices again on Taco Tuesday. Now $2 each plus now they charge you for the toppings. No signage indicating new menu and prices. Not a great deal anymore. Will probably return on Taco Tuesday once in awhile but not nearly as often. Other customers in line were surprised just as I was. Will be looking for taco Tuesdays elsewhere. read more

I have never been disappointed here! Their food is always fresh, hot, and made to order. You get to customize your order to whatever your preference is! They do offer drive thru, eat in with inside and outside seating, and take out. They are very attentive employees and make sure your food is exactly how you want it. They are always polite and ask if you need any sauces or extra sides with your meal. read more

My boyfriend and I drove to Venice from Tampa for a weekend trip. We went to the Venice fishing pier our first night here to see the sunset and eat dinner. We had a great time, but wanted to go somewhere a little more low key the next night. We absolutely loved this restaurant! We ordered the beef empanadas, a chicken burrito, and a chicken taco salad. Everything was fantastic! The empanadas were fried fresh when we ordered, and my boyfriend loved his burrito. The taco salad was really good, too. Very fresh and tasty. The service was great as well. Fresh food! Great place for a quick lunch that won't break the bank. I've tried everything but the fish, and have been pleased. Love the 2 taco option for only $4 loaded with all of your selected toppings. Pork and chicken are tasty, but I think the steak has them beat. The fish tacos are great and they are cooked fresh-to-order unlike some other places. The beef tacos don't have a lot of flavor but are okay. All the sides are right-on and they have chopped Cilantro which I consider a must for tacos. I will visit again if in the area! read more

Stopped here for lunch on our way to the airport and so glad we did! I ordered the burrito and got almost all the fixins' in it. Unlike other Mexican style food joints, they don't charge you extra for items in the burrito. The staff was super friendly and conversational, there was seating outside so we had lunch in the beautiful Tampa weather. The manager was so nice and helpful, if we lived closer I would make this a weekly lunch spot. read more

Recently visited Tomatillos while stopping for gas on the way to Tampa. As a Southern California native I'm very weary of east coast Mexican food, but I really wanted to give it a shot. I was really craving a burrito or some tacos and decided upon the steak burrito. The burrito unfortunately was very bland, as was the pico de gallo that came with the bag of chips. Upon trying trying the chips that came with our meal we discovered that they were really stale and completely lacking any salt. The only positive note to this experience was the service. The girl at the window was friendly. However, as we were about to drive away I noticed a large container inside the drive through window that said dog treats. I'm hoping this is just an added complimentary treat they give to people that may come through the drive through with their dogs, and did not mean that they have a dog who stays within the building. read more

Used to love this place but they have declined many levels. Not sure if perhaps just that location in South Venice. I had stopped liking it but kids wanted to go so we did. Now they do not even want to go back. Run by kids, portions small, food in showcase less and what's there looks old. My son's junk bowl did not make it to the top, it was mostly rice and beans. They have gotten so cheap so I think that was our last visit. They did not even put dressing on nachos had to ask. Quantity, service and quality declined. read more

I want to place a complaint...there is a young lady who works your drive through at your Venice restaurant. She has long blonde hair that she generally wears in a ponytail. She works on your lunch crew. What she does is leaves customers sitting at the drive through speaker box until she is ready for them. Because she is generally backed up at the window, she leaves customers sit back there for sometimes up to 30 minutes before she takes their order. Then when customers finally get up to the window and complain to her about leaving them sit, she hollers over to the guy inside "hey, what does her time ticket say" and then he says something like "3 minutes", not being aware she is letting people sit back there until she is ready so her timer doesn't show the real story. I have personally been through this kind of customer service more times than I care to count--only by her. None of your other employees do this that I've been exposed to. Only because I love your food have I put up with it!!! But I may change my mind if you can't get her work habits fixed. I only have a 30 minute lunch and when she takes it all up, it's not fair to me or other customers. And I can't keep this up. In essence she is cheating your time system at your customer's expense. Today I watched two customers sit back there for such a long time they ended up leaving in a huff. When she tried to leave me back here today--she greeted me and then said "can you please wait?" At that moment I said "no can you just please take my order?" And she said in just a minute...and then I sat for about 13 minutes. Before I hit the drive through I looked to see if anyone else was in line and there were zero cars waiting. So I was more convinced than ever that this is simply the way she handles your customers. Culver's is readying to open and I love their food. If your employees cannot treat me better than this gal does, I won't be back. Thanks for letting me vent ! read more

I come here quite often. Well today I noticed the drive thru was finally open so we pulled up to the drive thru and I was advised by the employee I couldn't customize my item, I had to order it as is, with whatever came on it. I was then told if I wanted to customize my item I could go inside so in the pouring rain, I walked inside. I get inside and started to order 2 junkyard bowls which is what I always get. The employee advised me after we made the complete bowl that they were out of lettuce. Figuring I've already had to walk inside to order my "customized" item now I'm being told they are out of something I wanted. I looked at these bowls which for 2 bowls I'm going to pay like $21 with tax because I have purchased these before, the bowl was half filled. I wish I was exaggerating, but saying it was half full is being nice. This employee wanted me to pay over $20 for (2) half bowls of OLD rice, meat, beans and a little bit of cheese. So I walked out. The employee did not care that she was going to rip me off. I get they have to put a certain amount of scoops in the bowl but I got crusty old rice, they were out of lettuce and I only got half the amount I should have got. This is ridiculous. Don't charge people a crazy amount for old food and not even fill up the bowl.... read more

This place reminds me of Moes only smaller and a more personality. The chicken tacos were great both soft and hard shell. The only think keeping this from 4 stars was the fact the churros were not very good. The plain one was just that, plain, sugar didn't stick was like eating cooked dough. The apply and raspberry were blah, not that great. You may want to avoid those. Other than that, good eats. read more

Today, I got a chicken junkyard bowl for lunch, and I'm pretty sure that the ingredients came from an actual junkyard. I took a bite of my food and almost chipped my tooth on a rock that had apparently been in the black beans. I called the manager to complain, and she insisted that she hadn't had a complaint like mine in over 2 years, but that she had heard the complaint before. She told me that she checked the beans for rocks herself and didn't find any, but I sure as hell found this not-so-lil' guy. I understand that sometimes these things happen, especially when their beans are made fresh. I was told that if I was to come back in again (which will not be happening), to ask for her and she'd "give me a free dessert or something". I didn't receive a sincere apology, just an unhelpful and condescending explanation of the origins of the bean rock. I won't be coming back to Tomatillo's, but if you do, don't get the black beans! The dining room is small (18 seats) and the building appears dated but whoever renovated it did a great job. Let me start by saying that I love them but, today was a different experience and it didn't have to do with the quality of the food, it had to do with the serving size portion. For $10 I got a couple of kernels of corn, literally, a couple of grains of rice she spread the rice to make it look like the bottom of the plate was full (the grains sat stretched out side by side, like holding hands)the beans were the only right portion. I saw their sign spinner one day and decided to give them a try. It's kind of a build your own burrito bar (you tell them what you want and they build it actually). Somewhat like Moe's but smaller.
