I've been to Tomo many times. Each experience is different, but ultimately, this spot is just ok. It's one of the better sushi spots, but service is inconsistent and so is the food. This time around, we only had a few AYCE at our table and a few bento boxes. The bento boxes were full of grub, but they just didn't hit the spot. Everything was bland, and some things seemed overcooked, like the chicken. The servers here always seem a bit annoyed that you're there. The interior is like many sushi joints. You can sit at the bar or at a table. Overall, it's just an OK experience. I always get a bit annoyed when gratuity is added to the check and children are counted against the party. Since when does my four-year-old pay the check? Are my children really waited on to the same level as the adults at the table? Very confusing. I haven't really tried many other sushi places in Carson City, but I may have to if things keep going this way at Tomo. It's not bad, but temper your expectations. read more

I've been here many times . It's my favorite sushi restaurant in Carson. I always get muscles , Mickeys (tuna nigiri with flavor) and The GUAPO. The GUAPO is very underrated but it has the most flavor and leaves room for the rolls that fill you up quickly, like my husband's favorite SNOW MOUNTAIN. The service is hit and miss..... Tomo is my favorite place to go for sushi. The service is great. Customer service. Great. Very clean place.

We really do love this place, but I have to admit I'm disappointed with the mussels. Each time we visit they seem to be getting colder, chewier, and less flavorful, which is a letdown since they've always been my favorite dish. The servers rotate constantly, which makes the service feel inconsistent--though that feels more like a management issue than the staff themselves. On the positive side, the rolls are always great and the food generally feels fresh. I just hope they can bring the mussels back up to the standard that first made me love them. read more

Almost all the reviews on this place mention service, even the high reviews mention its bad...because the service isnt bad its TERRIBLE The food is alright but YOU WILL FEEL UNWELCOME...... I think its the owners son who was in charge when we went in (young Asian guy) we asked to move to the sushi bar after he sat us at a table, and the little brat rolled his eyes and threw a fit about it. Every employee in there except for 1 female server was crazy rude during our meal. The best thing about this place is their service. They servers were kind, helpful, quick, and great to talk to. The food is pretty good too. I do have very high standards for sushi, so I won't say this is in my top 10 for fish quality and variety, but the service is what made it great. Price isn't too bad for lunch, and is about the same as most places for dinner. Tomo is the go to sushi spot in all of Carson! We usually come every other month. The quality never disappoints. We have a few rolls that we always get and every time we go we always try a few new things. The only down side is that sometimes the service can be really bad. It's usually a 50/50 chance of having a bad server. We try to come for lunch when it's not so busy, it can get really packed in there at night. The food is so good it makes up for any bad service so we'll always come back. read more

Well we tried again at the bar and unfortunately we are DONE! Just gets worse each visit!!! Today the chefs were obviously talking about us and the food was as meh!!! I had ala carte and got the super protein roll, not even close to the first visit that I loved!! My man got all you can eat and the rice fell apart in all the rolls, the rolls were meh. Still the chefs understand NO english so he was forced to eat a roll he didn't want. We merely asked to add Crystal shrimp to a roll he ordered and he just made a complete separate Crystal shrimp roll!! I thought we found a decent place but literally nothing compares to Marui Sushi in Corona California. Really bummed. I will only return if I'm not paying!! What a nice sushi spot in Carson City! Offers the usual selection of appetizers/fish, but found unique items such as fried oysters or the Pikachu nigiri. It was a slow night when visiting so our large party received our food very quickly. The quality of the nigiri was fine and the Crunch roll was my favorite. Service was fine as well. I'd say this is a standard sushi joint for the usual dinner price ($31), but it's a good place to have in Carson! read more

My experience is that they are very good. Always trying their best. I do take out quite a lot, and I can say the poke bowls are unmatched, better than any Poke/Hawaiian restaurant in the area. These are just, plain, special. So good. I am going to order another one now, and drive 25 miles to get it! Eating in is an average experience for the area. My husband and I love coming here and usually get the all you can eat. Their rolls are amazing. Services is great. They're pretty quick to seat you. It does get busy but it's worth the wait. Great food, my favorites are the guapo roll, jalapeño poppers. Mickey mouse and the Pikachu. I typically prefer sitting at the bar where I can interact directly with the chef. This last week we sat at a table. We received excellent service. I'll start by saying the sushi at Tomo has always been decent. Not the best around, but it satisfies. This is a service complaint. I attempted to eat there tonight, solo. When I arrived the tables were full but the bar was completely empty. There were groups clearly waiting for tables. I spoke with the hostess, explained it was just me and asked to sit at the bar. She told me to add my info to their minitable system and wait. I waited 10 minutes while the bar remained COMPLETELY EMPTY. I'm thinking what the hell is going on?! Finally I asked to have my name removed and I left. I've eaten here and at other sushi restaurants in the area dozens and dozens of times and never have I experienced this level of incompetence and piss poor service. Let's keep it brief. We had a large party and most of us had "all you can eat." Some appetizers never arrived despite asking several times. It became very clear it was not all you can eat. Fairly quickly they quit coming to our table. When they did we reminded them of our missing orders that never came. After a no kidding 45 minutes we just asked for the check out of frustration . I seriously got charged $160 for two all-you-can-eat lunches plus some sake and a beer. The fact that they tried to get away with this is appalling! I even verified that they listed us as "all you can eat" from the beginning. Dishonest people should not be working in the public sector. We thought we would give this place a try, would not return. Although we got seated right away we were waiting 15 minutes to have anyone go to our table and ask for a drink order. We opted for all you can eat and ordered appetizers and a few rolls. This first encounter was just ok. Servers have no customer service skills whatsoever. We first had a Hispanic server and asked for a soda water and got a snarky attitude "you mean a sparkling water" we just looked at each other baffled and said yes. Absolutely no customer service skills, not one smile, everything seemed very forced as if she was simply there for the money with a very obvious RBF(and of course is what we all go to work for but if you don't like your job you should get a new one). We received our first round of appetizers and rolls in a timely matter after that we had no one come around to ask if we needed anything for more than 30 minutes- needless to say we wanted to ask for drink refills and sauces and to order a kids meal we hadn't ordered with the sheet as it's not listed obviously. One of the people at a table next to us got up and went to the front to ask for a drink, obviously we weren't the only table not being attended to. After about 40 minutes we had a nicer shy blonde girl come ask if we needed anything and she took care of us the rest of the time there. She seemed a little shy but definitely has better customer service than the first server, she seemed overwhelmed as if she was picking up all the slack of the other girl as you could take a look around and see all the frustrated customers just waiting. It made no sense the other girl would start people off and then hand them over without advising that she was changing servers or anything like that and that's usually what happens. If somebody's doing a shift change as a server in my experience they let you know this person is taking over for me and what not but zero communication just the very forced questions. All in all the food wasn't bad it was ok but the customer service experience is why we wouldn't return. We eventually just felt uncomfortable with the whole vibe and ended the dinner short only after a couple of rolls and took the kids meal to go just to get out of there. read more

We live out of the area and found Tomo Sushi through Yelp. It's a medium sized restaurant and there's easy parking outside in the center's parking lot. There were 4 of us and I had the all-you-can-eat at $30 and the others had a la carte. While my food (and actually all of the sushi) came out quickly, one person in our party ordered udon and it took forever to come out. In fact, we were mostly done with our dinners before the udon came out. Minus one star for that - we should all be eating at the same time. It takes 3 rolls and an appetizer or dessert to make $30. Given I hadn't eaten all day since breakfast, that wasn't going to be a problem for me. The pictures show most of what I ordered. Overall, for my all-you-can-eat dinner, the sushi was very fresh. It was made to order. No fishy smells and the presentation is nice. I noticed the rolls are a little thinner than what I'm used to having in the Bay Area, so that's why I was able to eat so much. I wasn't stuffing myself either - I was just hungry because I had not eaten all day. I also had ice cream at the end. For me, certainly the value was there for the all you can eat deal. It would have cost me $44 just for the sushi otherwise, not including the large Sapporo beer. I will come back the next time I'm in the area! read more

7/7/2021: It's habitual purchasing two meals while traveling and not having ample time cooking my meals in my condo accommodations; really~it isn't really frustrating the inability preparing my meals the traditional method but, I prefer relaxing doing absolutely nothing by not slaving away cooking over a hot stove when the outside temperature is 102° Fahrenheit! The reasonable thought crossed my mind: Yo, Shirley! Do not eat hot food on a oppressively sizzling-hot day, capiche?! Okay, okay-I understand so, I thought . . . Went here for lunch with a friend. Service was great, very friendly and helpful. I got the AYCE so that I could try more things. Portions were definitely less than most places. Less seaweed salad, rolls were almost half the size of normal sushi rolls. Dessert also smaller. Good thing about smaller rolls was able to try more varieties, bad part was wanting more of good ones but can't waste others or I'd get charged. Will likely give this place one more try. I'd suggest smaller servings should mean smaller price. read more

We had been there before. We got the all u can eat for dinner. The sushi tasted average. The gyoza tasted like it had been frozen. The dessert was kinda the same and not very special. Wow, it took me a few years of living in Tahoe to finally try this place, but better late than never: it's best sushi rolls in the Tahoe-Carson area by a significant margin -- and I'd still give this a 4/5 compared to SF/NYC/Tokyo options. (OK maybe a 3.5/5 compared to the Tokyo sushi bars.) But I digress -- this is our best local option for sushi. Service seems to be really hit-or-miss -- the waitstaff always seem to be kinda harried, and tonight when we showed up at 8:30pm we were refused seating and had to eat in the parking lot. But I'm here for the food not the service. :) Some fav rolls: Geisha roll - the lemon really ties the whole package together and the ponzu pairing is delightful Yuppie roll - tamago in a roll was pretty unique... but it really worked well in the combo with the spicy mayo Crunch roll - simple and good, add a splash of wasabi for more excitement Gotta go back and try more soon... read more

The food is good but service needs some work. We came for all you can eat sushi and brought the whole fam. It's a favorite of theirs but our first time so we let them order and happily went along for the ride. We ordered probably 10 or so items to split among 8 of us and of course those were gone fairly quick. Our waitress wasn't super attentive to us so we had to wait some time in between and when we asked to order more she asked us to wait and see how we felt. We felt pretty confident we all wanted more so we ordered more. Once again when ordering she seemed to question what we were ordering as if we weren't sure and when you're a table of people all speaking Spanish to each other it's awkward to be questioned on each order when we're ordering in English and it's all you can eat... We were patient about it but for some reason our waitress was pressed and she handed our table off to another person. Of course our service was slower and in the end we were there much longer than expected. We are sushi fans and usually can be in and out so long as we can go ahead and order what we want to eat. You started stuffing everything with imitation crab. You are a glorified casino sushi bar now. This is the cycle of all sushi places unfortunately.
