Well, not us anyway, so it was off to Monmouth to the delights of civilisation the Pizza Express way. Problem was, we'd never taken our 5-year-old there before, and he had fixed ideas of what a good restaurant comprised - there was only one and it had one location and one name!!! Not to worry, one marguerita pizza later and he had a new favourite restaurant. Hope he doesn't insist we drive 100 back here from home every time we go out The restaurant, like most Pizza Expresses we've been to is chic and in some way unique. This one is situated in the site of an old car showroom (1920's Morgan in fact). Rather than gloss over this with a corporate sheen, PE took it to heart an fitted the place out with large blue-print style piccies of said ancient jalopies. So there you have it, you don't just have to stare at your pizza, your family and your eyebrows, you've got some nice vintage cars to look at as well. Well done Pizza Express for helping to preserve a bit of history and not drowning us all in corporate land. And, there was absolutely no engine oil on my pizza ;-)

The food here is the same decent quality stuff that you expect from the chain. I recently had three courses here and the vast majority of it was great, so I shall only highlight the minor negatives. We ordered the sharing platter of dough balls which upon arrival were too hot. They come with little bowls of dip because they're meant I be finger food but hold these little nuggets of lava for more than a second and you'll hurt your fingers. More importantly, one of the toppings (bacon) of my pizza was accidentally excluded. I didn't notice at first, but about five minutes into the main course a waitress hurried over and tipped bacon onto my pizza as she very nicely apologised for the error. These two points really are minor and I had to struggle to think of anything to criticise. The food was lovely and my company had no complaints either. The service was impeccable. Our waitress for the evening was lovely. Very fast at fulfilling requests, equally attentive and just the right level of chatty. She received about a 20% tip in the end because we felt she deserved it. A bottle of Merlot, a shared platter of dough balls, two pizzas and two desserts came to just under £60. Great value in my opinion.

Normally when you walk into frankie and bennys your greated in a positive manner but last night we got far from that. After asking for a table for two the lady confusingly looked around and without any type of dialogue, or smile, she just walked off. We assumed to just follow her then when we got to the table she just walked off with no dialogue, didn't offer us anything which made it very impersonal. For our starters we had mozzarella sticks which were lacking any cheese at all. And the calamari was too crispy and tasteless. We had a 15" Italian hot pizza for a main and chicken and mushroom pasta. The pizza was undercooked. Like really undercooked. At first glance it looked like a great pizza but after one bite all you could taste was the soft uncocked dough which was still mouldable. The pizza fell apart and I struggled to eat any of it. We were told they did have a brand new kitchen in which could explain the change in the usual good food. Eventually I managed to catch the eye of the waitress who had shown me to my seat and I was able to order - although it was clear she didn't know the menu so I ended up pointing at things - I don't think her English was especially bad although it didn't seem to be her first language so I was patient. I'd almost finished my beer by the time the food came. It wasn't until I was half way through the plate that I realised no one had brought me any sauces, I tried to catch the eye of a waiter but I was finished eating before anyone showed any interest. All the time the restaurant was less than half full. I'm Wrote this over my beer at 8:30 on a Weds evening so hardly peak. The food was just OK not very tasty, not bad but nothing special. The childrens' menu is affordable, with a good range of pizzas, pastas and other lunches. It seems a very popular place to host childrens' pizza parties, and I can see why. My friend had a chicken based pizza that he too, could not fault. Dinner: meal for 4 people. I can't remember what everyone had to eat but I do remember every one of us enjoying our meals. One of the great things about Mario's is that it's located in Wood Street (the best area in Swindon for some nice drinks) in an undercroft. There is a central seating area with a surround made of multiple alcoves, in which, you can control your own mood lighting. The service in Mario's is very friendly, with all of the staff being Italian and appropriately talkative.
