I called Tonkin because they contract w/ my water heater manufacturer for direct billing on warranty repairs. They were my 2nd choice as I had been jerked around by another "contract" plumber (Hanley/Plumbing 1 -- do not use them!), but we've used Tonkin for other things in the past with good results too. Tonkin came out the following morning at the time they said they'd be here (shocking!!), and replaced not only the part that the mfr had recommended (thermocouple) but the thermostat too, as he said that was more likely to be causing our problem. So far, so good. No charge to us and we have happily been loving our warm showers ever since. BTW, the plumber did not bad mouth our water heater or the mfr at all, even though there are horror stories all over the internet about this particular unit. He was very polite and diplomatic about the whole thing. read more

First of all I have to say, "You never know where life will take you when your water pipe bursts". We went 3 weeks without water, called in several plumbers to do a re-route, was advised to do a repipe by 5 other plumbers. I phoned Tonkins for a repipe estimate and found the owner to be especially honest, sincere and upfront. Most of all he understood that this was no planned expense like a vacation, or a wedding - this came out of nowhere. To make a long story short, Tonkin did what no other plumber would do at a price we could afford and we were able to delay repiping so that I can plan that sucker into a budget. We've had other plumbing services before with a different company, but oh boy, Tonkin is the best by far. They had Nelson come to work on my water heater today and got so much plumbing education from him. He was very polite, patient and informative. He was able to do a free water pressure check for me. Thank goodness that he checked it, the pressure was at 140psi, YIKES! I don't see Nelson's picture on the company's website, but I was able to get a photo of him and his truck. Wow, shocked at the 5-star reviews (must be relatives or something). Had an appt. @ 11:00 am this morning, for an estimate for a new sewer pipe to our home. At 11:30 am I called the office to see if just running late or if they are on their way. No "live person" when I called, so not sure how others were able to reach someone. Left message - - no return call or acknowledgement of any kind. Called again at 11:50 and again at 1:00 pm.. I cancelled a doctors appointment to keep this appointment and they still have not had the courtesy to call. Not sure how they decide who they will keep appointments with and who they don't, but I certainly won't waste anymore time on them. read more

I had a valve fail in our laundry room, forcing us to shut off the hot water for the entire house. I called around to try and find someone to fix it, but everyone was booked up. Tonkin was booked up as well, but they managed to squeeze me in when they heard I was in a pickle. They showed up when they said they were going to and their prices were reasonable. Best of all, the valve was replaced and works great now. I definitely recommend Tonkin. read more

This company is amazing. I was referred by a friend after a leak was found at my meter box. I had made several calls to different companies trying to get someone out to see where the problem was and how to fix it. When I called Tonkin they said they had a full schedule but since my water was turned off they would fit me in. Another plumbing company had stopped by before and without taking the time to determine the problem quoted me $500-$1000 to fix it. I assumed the worst since the price was so high. The plumber had to leave and after they left Tonkin came to the rescue. Mike the plumber took more time to establish what was causing the problem and it ended up only being a cracked coupling. My leak was fixed in a matter of minutes and at less than a fourth of my first quote. Mike and his assistant were fast, friendly, knowledgeable and affordable. They cleaned the area that they worked in so well you couldn't even tell where they cut the grass out to find the leak. I strongly recommend this company. I have a rental property and there was a leak in the waste water pipe from the kitchen. I opened up the wall myself and the pipe was messed up in the foundation of the house - not an easy job and far beyond the abilities of a layman like myself. My regular guy couldn't handle it and the guy they referred me to was in the middle of a big job and couldn't do it in a timely fashion either. So I asked my uncle, who also does rental properties, and he referred me to Tonkin. I will say this for them: they are very prompt and had the resources to handle the job properly. They had a plumber out the next day and were busting up the concrete that afternoon. The problem was revealed to be worse than anybody thought (a sentence you never want to hear from a plumber: "Wow, I've never seen anything this bad - I called some other guys and they said the same thing") and the job quickly grew in scope and would take multiple days. Again, in the interest of fairness Tonkins was responsive and communicative at this point. Once the job got underway, however, we had several "incidents". About halfway through the job Tonkins rough treatment of the line they were working on cracked the perfectly good pipe joint under the sink and tore out two of the slip washers (takes a pretty darn good amount of force to do this), causing the sink cabinet to flood when the tenant (who didn't realize that Tonkins had messed up the pipe) filled the sink with water, did some dishes, and drained the sink. So I had to spend 2 hours of my time patching the line (I of course got the call at 4:58pm, and Tonkins closes at 5) so that the tenant's household, which has 4 young boys, had a kitchen sink again. When Tonkins called me back the next day, I complained about the damage and got totally shined on - "oh it must have been old pipes, oh you never know". No, I do know - you weren't careful and I, the customer, had to pay the price. Whatever, it wasn't malicious but it was careless. So things went ok from there until the end of the job, where - when I inspected the work area while I closed up the wall - I realized a couple of things: Tonkins hadn't filled in the hole that they dug. Tonkins had not strapped the pipe (this is a standard thing you do) Tonkins dumped cement on my property and left it there They half assed the end of the job. When I called Tonkins to pay my invoice I mentioned my complaints and asked for a 100 dollars off my bill - less than 5% of the total- to compensate me for my time. No dice. So just know when you hire Tonkins, you're going to pay a premium and get a half-ass finish. Be prepared for some carelessness, and to clean up Tonkin's mess and have them take no responsibility for any incidental damage that they caused, because that's what happened to me. read more

I have been using Tonkin since I moved into my home 13 years ago. the home was built in the 70's and we've had remodel jobs and other issues that have come up. I always hate dealing with plumbers etc. as I'm afraid I'll be ripped off. these guys are honest and do a fabulous job. My husband is a carpenter and trusts them implicitly. They're on my speed dial for whenever I have an issue . They don't deserve a one star for any reason, so ignore that. read more

Plumbing companies may not generally be confused with Emily Post devotees or Nobel Laureates, but Tonkin (and their caustic lady admin person) could teach the world a thing or two about rudeness and incompetence. They're the factory rep for my water heater, but they couldn't: diagnose the problem; order the right parts; test the right pieces; bring the right parts to my house; keep their stories straight when they screwed up; provide operating instructions; follow through on the warranty claim; or return phone calls. We were impressed, however, when they installed the wrong parts; avoided testing their work; avoided fixing the problem; told us the product sucked; and explained that there was nothing more they could do - we just had to live with a non-functioning water heater. Oh, and they managed to quite capably charge our credit card. So, not a complete failure. We're $250 in and maybe we have no hot water, but we know our credit card works. read more

She spent four days trying to get an accurate proposal of planned repairs and cost from a company that she had used previously. We called Tonkin Plumbing and Phillip responded immediately to our request for an estimate. He arrived on time and was professional and straightforward in explaining our options and costs. After talking with Phillip, both my daughter and I felt a sense of relief. We felt confidant that he knew what needed to be done (very knowledgeable), honest, and that the work would be done correctly. The detailed written proposal was received within 2-3 hours after his visit to her home. One of Tonkin's strong attributes is their communication skills and keeping us informed of the progress in the planned work. When the plumbers arrived, they were neat, polite, and responded appropriately to my questions and concerns. They started to work immediately and knew the plan for this job and performed their work with excellence. They were cooperative in seeing that my daughter had water each night until the job was completed. Even though we added replacing 4 faucets and two shower valves they completed the work within the anticipated time. In addition, they got an estimate from the drywall contractor and coordinated the work plans with him.
