It's been about a year since we had our last pizza from Tony D's, and more than three years since I posted my last review. Happily, very little has changed. That is to say, they continue to offer some of the best pizza you'll find in the northern NJ. We once again ordered the Drunken Grandma, which is a square, thin crust pie made with vodka sauce, grape tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, basil and grated parmigiano. We all agreed it was as delicious as we remembered it to be. It's not a cheap pizza, and it's not the largest square pie, ringing in at $25, but it's worth the price. They describe their pizza as "artisanal" which is a term that usually makes me cringe, but in this case it applies. The quality of the ingredients and the care that go into each pizza is really a cut above what you'll find at most pizzerias. Seriously, when was the last time you encountered hand-cut cherry tomatoes as a topping? It's worth mentioning that Tony D's remains a strictly take-out establishment, and parking can be challenging if you come at a busy time. Fortunately, the service is excellent, and your food will be ready at the time they quote. There is very little on the menu beside pizza other than a few salads and simple appetizer offerings. One non-pizza standout I've had several times is their Buffalo Wings ($12), which is made with their own homemade buffalo-ish sauce that I really like. There aren't many restaurants I review that retain 5-stars through three updates over eight years, but Tony D's is one of them, and it's well deserved. read more

Well, it was an off hour on a Tuesday and he was out of the drunken grandma and the other slices I wanted to try. He showed me all he had left. It looked pretty dried out..not too great but I felt badly walking out. So we ordered 2 slices.. After he heated them up it didn't help with the dried out problem too much... This is the best pizza place in the Caldwells BY MILES. And the Caldwell's have no shortage of amazing pizza. So, this is a very high compliment. They never disappoint. The pizza is light and always cooked perfectly. I recently ordered in at a friend's house who insisted on ordering something called the "Ugly" pie which has garlic and broccoli and a bunch of other things. I was positive it wasn't a pizza I would like. I could not have been more surprised. It was excellent and I have ordered it to my home several times since (half ugly / half sausage & onion). I'm told quite regularly that I'm a pizza snob...and I probably am, but I know when I love a pizza and when it's just ok, or worse, when it's bad. After a lot of commentary from a friend I decided to give Tony D's a try. I like my pizza a certain way and Tony D's just didn't do it for me. Don't get me wrong, it was perfectly acceptable pizza, and if I didn't live here in Jersey it would probably be great. I ordered a plain and a sausage slice. The crust on Tony D's pizza is much thinner than I like and a little 'floppier' that I prefer too. I like my slices to have a little 'body' that holds up when you fold it. The taste of the slices were fine too, though the sausage was a little sparse on my slice. I'm going to give Tony D's another try because my buddy loves his pizza too...so I'm thinking maybe it was just a bad night. read more

Delicious pizza and a wonderful staff. This place is unbelievably busy (and I'm happy for them). I tried calling around 5-5:30 to place and order for pick up, but it kept coming up as busy. So, I decided to go in person and place an order. I only had one pie but the wait was 40 mins. I walked around a bit and came back to it ready. Based on how many pies j saw there and how many people were inside, I can see why the phone line was busy. Everyone in the establishment was so nice! From the young man who took my order, to the man who brought me my pizza to the young man who rung me up- everyone was pleasant. Been meaning to visit Tony D's for a while now. Read about this place on NJ.com and then a couple of friends that live in the area swore by this place. When I realized the owner was an old schoolmate of mine, I just had to try it. Sadly, I didn't get to see Tony but my goodness, this pizza (and my wife agreed) is phenomenal. Tony D's is now in the top 2, with the other being an institution on High St in Orange (Tony knows what I am talking about). So I visited one of said friends today and we decided to take a short ride down Bloomfield Ave and we ordered a Milano and a House Vegetable pie. The texture of the crust was perfect- slightly crunchy but easy to bite into and delicious. The sauce and cheese were ON POINT. To say I over-ate today is an understatement. My friends and sister (who also lives nearby) have been telling me for a long time that I needed to try Tony D's and they were right. I live in southern Bergen County where there are excellent pizzerias on nearly every corner of every road, but not like Tony D's. The size is a bit small. Seating is outdoor under an awning. There are two public part picnic benches for eating out on the side of the establishment. So with the recent Covid restrictions in place, Tony D's has adapted perfectly. How would I describe perfect? First, being polite and patient on the phone. Next, giving me a reasonably-precise time to pick up my pizza. Finally, a polite greeting when you pull up with your car, your transaction is completed and you're quickly driving away with your order. Tony D's is certainly one of the best pizzas in New Jersey. It all started for me on a regional pizza exploration, and has since been reinforced on many Best Of lists and many, many orders. The Drunken Grandma gets a lot of press, and it's phenomenal... but you can't go wrong with the rest of the menu. The pizzas that take an hour (the Pizza'lina and Little Italy) are excellent, on par with some of the best slices I've ever had. The Pizza'lina is simple, thin and delicious. And the Little Italy is the perfect balance of salty sausage and a spicy kick. If you're leaning veggie the Wild Mushroom is always on point. Was in the area and found this place with really good reviews so I wondered, why not? I ordered a plain slice and 2 squares of drunken grandma because it looked really good and an order of buffalo wings. As I was walking here, a lady stepped out with a box of fresh pizza and it smelled AMAZING! I was so excited to try it for myself. This slice was so thin and yummy; one of the best smelling pizzas I've ever tried. The wings were a good size and perfectly crispy plus spicy! I usually order my sauce in the side because of how soggy they become but Tony's wings stayed crispy and not too greasy. I loved it! Tony D's is a well known place for good pizza with a quaint carry-out only location in Caldwell. We ordered four pies, the buffalo chicken, Milano, margarita and the drunken grandma. We were a little disappointed to find they gave us two margarita pizzas and not the drunken grandma that everyone is talking about. The quality of the pizza was good, the crust nice and thin and the toppings just right with great flavors in each pie. It's a little hard to put a carry-out pizza place against hot and fresh pizza from the kitchen, but Tony D's had excellent quality pies that would definately be better hot from the oven.
