The first time i visited Tony's in Gulf Gate was about two decades ago when i was visiting my brother in law. I am familiar with "Chicago hot dogs," the "sport peppers" etc, etc. being from the Chicago area, having eaten at Portillos many times, and i have eaten many, many such beef sandwiches. At least twice a year I made my own Italian beef. Many recipes online. This place is stuck in time. I visited with my wife recently, for the third time in the past year. With the inflation and rapid absurd increases in beef roast prices, I cannot imagine how this place can hang on much longer. It lives for now on nostalgia and melancholy unfortunately. You go in and see photos from the past, Jordan, Payton, the elder Mayor Daley, Butkus, etc, etc. You have a dog with the "sport peppers" or a beef sandwich. Freshly cut fries. Pop in a can or bottle. And you remember. What was. It is like going back and visiting Maxwell Street on a Saturday. And for a few minutes you are back home. In the days that were golden in the Windy City. My wife grew up in the Chicagoland area and when we walked in we felt we were back in Chicago with all the photos. As soon as we walked in, to the left was Tony carving his Italian beef. We ordered two Chicago dogs and the Italian beef. Yes, the dog was legit (a little heavy on the celery salt for me) with all the important ingredients starting with the dog being all beef (and probably Venetian). But most importantly, the radioactively green colored relish was on it. Yummy. Then we had the Italian beef (wet - the only way to eat it) and it was delicious. The beef here is sooooo good. Lastly, Joe knows his regulars and starts their meals proactively. He's a great guy that loves his customers and making us happy with their great food. I absolutely love this place. Tony's Chicago Beef is by far my favorite hotdog place in the Sarasota area. But it is SO much more than just a "hot dog" place. Unfortunately, my will power (or lack thereof) will not allow me to come here without ordering multiple things (but I always manage to eat it all). Luckily for me, they are on the other end of town or I would be eating here every week. Normally I get a Chicago Beef wet with hot giardiniera. For those who don't know what that is, it's a vegetable medley (carrots, celery, cauliflower and hot peppers) all marinated in hot pepper juice and oil. I'm sure that a plain Chicago Beef sandwich would taste good but it's the hot giardiniera that makes it outstanding. I also have to have 2 Kraut dogs with mustard (which thankfully, automatically come with a nice helping of their fresh cut fries). FYI . . I believe all the hot dogs come with fries. Now about the fries, they are among the best fries in Sarasota. It's a multi step process they use in making the fries (I've watched). They cut the potatoes themselves into long medium thick sticks followed by boiling them for a short time to reduce the starch and soften them up. Then they fry them in oil (not sure what type) until they are soft on the inside and crispy on the outside. Fantastic ! I haven't had their burger but based on the reviews I've read, they are equally great. Say Hi to Giuseppe (Tony's son) who's usually doing the cooking. Really nice kid with a great personality. I've never had a Chicago dog in my life. A quick Google search led me to Tony's. Went there with my wife today. Tony was hard at work behind the counter. Very friendly and polite. I loved the no-frills Northern atmosphere. The food was GREAT! The "Chicago-dog" was superb. The variety of vegetables and spices each gave their individual flavors that resulted in an amazing compilation. At Tony's advice, I got a Chicago Fire dog which added a little more heat to the normal Chicago dog. Washing that down with some ginger-ale hit the spot. The fries were great. Crispy and salted perfectly. I enjoyed the narrower fries here more than the wider fries elsewhere. The only negative that I can say is that Tony has ruined me for hot dogs prepared any other way!
