Maria is really amazing...I have recommended her to everyone. First off: there are a lot of 'nutritionists' out there...this is a word that gets tossed around pretty liberally and without much regard for actual experience. Top Balance is different; Maria isn't just a nutritionist, but also a registered dietician. She approaches nutrition with the expertise and the wisdom that comes through clinical experience in hospital settings (NYU, I believe). But it really shows in her amazing breadth of knowledge...I was throwing out about 30 questions a minute and she was able to answer them all. And--this is the icing on the cake--she is awesome and legitimately hilarious. I have been a bit of a slacker in following up over the past few weeks, but already notice a tremendous difference. I don't typically write bad reviews but I looked at the reviews on ZocDoc and this place was well rated so I checked it out. I visited Ryan Turner and maybe he was having an off day but I was not comfortable in my session with him. He came off as rude and seemed almost irritated when I asked questions. Based on the below reviews it seems like this isn't the first review with this feedback for him. I will not be going back and I can't in good faith recommend this place. I saw two different nutritionists here and they gave me opposite advice on some basic things. And I felt uncomfortable with Ryan, he seemed confrontational. Not only that, but I had an appointment cancelled only a few hours before it was to have happened (would they have charged me if I'd cancelled? I think so). Not well run, in general; I was on time but always had to wait for my appointment. And at the bottom of each email there is a message from the company founder saying to email with any concerns. Went to see Maria Bella for help with diet and cholesterol and blood pressure. Seemed a little outdated in some of her advice and techniques and at times felt like I knew more than her. Does give you a lot of time and I came away with a couple things that will help. Seemed like the diet plan is given to everyone and didnt seem personalized. She tells you to contact her with any questions but doesnt get back to you when you do. I wouldnt recommend. read more

I went for 3 sessions at Top Balance Nutrition. My first session was good and I enjoyed learning about the program. I thought the program was detailed and easy for me to understand. During the second session with the same dietitian, I felt the he did not listen to any concerns or questions that I had after trying the program out. Since I thought my first session was good, I went back for my third session to see if he was having an off day for my second session. About 10 minutes into the session, I stopped the dietitian and told him that I felt he was not listening to me and gave him examples of why I thought so. I felt he basically ignored my comments and questions and had, what I felt like, a speech to give me. My concerns did not cause him to change his manner in the session so I am no longer going to top balance nutrition. I thought the basics of the program were good but the dietitian that I worked with did not attempt to listen to me. I did lose 10 pounds after the 3rd session so that is why I think the program is good, I just did not enjoy working with the dietitian I saw. read more

I am in best shape I have been in fifteen+ years now, in large part because of following the advice in the sessions I have had with Elaine Tang at Top Balance Nutrition. The advice was absolutely customized to me, it was not "stock" advice, but very much tailored to my issues with acid-reflux, diabetes and general health. Whenever I have followed their recommendations I have had stellar results. As of this posting now I am roughly 30 pounds lighter and lower bfp then I have been, now out of the pre-diabetic zone and managing my acid-reflux better than I have in years. There are so many fads around and so many posts online, with Top Balance Nutrition and Elaine's help, I have gotten solid footing for the lifestyle change I desperately needed for so long. This is a "must" if you are looking for a nutritionist or have specific dietetic considerations, or looking to lose weight. Maria has a great book on Reflux and is a true pro, and Elaine Tang is amazing and treats every client with the utmost respect. I came to Danielle looking for help in changing the way I eat to better control my type 1 diabetes. Right away we went over everything I eat and we came up with meal plans and recipes. She even challenged me to try at least one new food or recipe each week. She has so much enthusiasm and truly cares about the success of her clients, and is always checking in and being there to listen to my crazy life stories. She understands that there is so much more to changing your eating behaviors than simply changing them - work, stress, relationships, etc. all have effects on us when it comes to choosing what we put into our bodies. Hi all, this is a sincere review based on my experience. I was dissatisfied and had written, possibly a more emotive response, but the owner challenged it and yelp removed it, which has taught me a lot about the boundaries that yelp keeps. When I went I spoke with one of the consultants here and they provided me with a copied document that was a traditional low-carbohydrate, real-food, diet. The office is nice and all the staff are great, but I was expecting more insight into the different types of foods I was eating and how I could utilize them to better manage weight and make healthier food decisions. read more

Horrible, took my weight and the scale was off by 20 pounds. I insisted something was wrong with the scale and sure enough it was. Took my information package and was chuckling with the other doctor while reviewing it, all along i'm outside in reception hearing everything. Had no interest whatsoever in my comments or concerns. Just had a blank stare on her face and was more interested in her vacation which she was in a hurry to leave to. Don't waist your time if you really have concerns and want to get fit. I have been working with Elaine Tang for the past year and am really pleased with the outcome. My general doctor referred me to her as I was having digestive issues that resulted in extreme pain and discomfort (I won't go into too much detail). When I first met her she was so warm and understanding and expressed a genuine interest in getting me on the road to recovery. She is a registered dietician, but more importantly for me she specializes in digestive problems rather than just losing weight (she can help with that too tho). We started out with bi-monthly in-person meetings and have transitioned to phone meetings since she relocated to San Francisco, CA. Her relocation did not affect my treatment as she is very punctual, responsive and is always prepared for our discussions. We utilized an online food journal to narrow down the foods that caused abnormal digestion patterns and she made herself available for me as a resource as I needed. Also, she would do additional research to better understand my condition so she could advise me in the best way possible. At times it was difficult to think of food alternatives that would work with my diet and she was really great for giving me new recipes and ideas for making my meals delicious, new and fun to eat. Today my condition is better and I could not have done it with her. Elaine and I have become friends throughout the process and I can not say enough great things. Let me preface this by saying that I never write reviews about anyone or any service. That said, Danielle is the best RD I've ever had the pleasure of working with (and I've been through many). As someone whose struggled with body image literally since birth, Danielle not only listened to all of my crazy, but helped me find ways around it, and helped me find ways to break it. At my first consultation, instead of telling me all of the things that I couldn't eat and needed to stop doing to lose weight, Danielle asked me what I typically eat in a day, what I like/don't like, and crafted a program around me. There are so many places that tell you that weight loss is a one size fits all thing and if you don't follow it, you will fail. This couldn't have been farther from Danielle's approach. Not only did she provide me with a meal plan, she also helped me break my horrible mental relationship with food. Instead of logging everything that I ate, she asked me to simply eat when I was hungry and take note of when I was hungry. Seriously, what a concept! I also explained to her how badly seeing the numbers on the scale messed me up. So, instead of putting me through scale torture during every visit, she allowed me to stand backwards (as to not see the number) and simply told me if I was up or down that week. She was and is an absolute pleasure to work with. She is also responsible for helping me lose over 8 pounds in less than 3 months. Anyone out there who is 5 feet tall knows what kind of uphill battle this is and what a difference it makes.
