My sisters and I have been going to Mark for a while now, and he always does my hair exactly how I ask. Whether I want to go shorter, get curtain bangs, grow out my hair, or change the way my layers look, he executes it beautifully every time. This salon seems to have a good vibe and a lot of young clients, so I thought it would be a good option for my college age daughter. Unfortunately, she said she did not have a great experience and would probably not go back again. She said her stylist showed up late, and never acknowledged or apologized for it, and that they also kept checking their phone during her appointment. (Update based on owner feedback: My daughter received a message before her appointment indicating that she needed to plan for parking issues due to the Farmer's Market taking place, and that she would be charged a late fee if she wasn't on time. So, stylists are aware they need to plan for parking too.) She also said that after finishing the cut (before blowdry), they turned her toward the mirror and then said "uh oh" (not very comforting) because one side was noticeably longer than the other. To even it up, they had to cut more than she had been wanting to in length. The final downside was that, even though she was booked for a "long hair" cut, which is more expensive than a standard cut, she was charged an additional and unexpected $20 for having thick hair. (Update: Yes, the stylist told her up front, but the point here being that it's not made clear when booking that there's a potential additional charge for thick hair on top of long hair. Just putting out awareness for other people.) The only saving grace is that she at least liked the haircut and final result. (Final update: My daughter disputes some of the owner feedback, but I wasn't there. My review was not intended to provide a sweeping generalization of the stylist or the salon - just my daughter's experience, which might be very isolated and rare. It's why I didn't name or in any way identify the stylist because maybe this was just a one-off situation.) read more

Honestly if I could put -5 stars I would. I am so displeased by the owner, the stylist and the lack of customer service. I went in with high hopes and actually was ready to have them service my wedding for all my bridesmaids, mother in law, my mom, step mom and myself. I went in really with somewhat damp hair, disclosed that to the stylist (Emi) and she said that is okay. Then she used a very hot blow dryer and trust I know it's hot because she burned my head with it by having it sit in one spot. My bigger problem with that is SHE DIDN'T USE HEAT PROTECTANT. Then she asked me what I was looking for showed it to her and she maybe looked at it for 10 seconds. I left the picture sitting on the vanity and she never looked again. She showed me her first got at it and it was nothing that I wanted, then she tried again and then lastly a third time (only because she had another client after and rushed it). Still nothing that I wanted. I showed her what I wanted and then all she did was curl three pieces of hair on each side, still with NO heat protection. By the time I got to my car on my 5 minute walk, the whole thing came down. I got home and took it down this what she used: black Bobby pins in my blonde hair besides the 2 blonde ones she used (literally looked like bugs in my hair), an true hair elastic which was great but then I found a office rubber band that I had to cut out of my hair and to top the cake a busted up sock bun which had a clump of someone else brown hair. Then she was literally pulling equipment out of a gym bag, I wanted to give the benefit of the doubt but it was most certainly a gym bag. It was super uncomfortable too because she kept leaning over my lap to plug stuff in, like just turn the chair before you do and does the cord need to be hitting my face in the process. I was willing to let this go and just give feedback because I already paid the $150. Then no by reached out to me at all. So definitely just a quick paycheck for them. So I left $150 less, burnt hair and actually lost more money because I had to go somewhere else to get treatment and a cut on my friend hair. The best part: I reached out to them showing my displeasure and all I wanted was feedback link. Nope they were so reluctant on it. Instead they proceeded to toss me around from employee to employee, then ended up with a hair mask and a complimentary trial. They recommended someone who isn't even on there instagram (shows a lot of confidence in who they recommend), plus I don't want your crap services again near my head just for me to spend more money on trying to fix it after. Thank goodness I did this months in advance so my hair can at least grow back a little because I have disease that doesn't allow my hair to grow back quickly, so I don't take it lightly with what they did. I told them if they really wanted to make it up to me give me a refund. Nope the owner herself (Kate) proceeded to lie and said none of that happened. Saying she didn't use a hot blow dryer and that she only curled the money pieces. Actually no she curled three pieces on each side, when I asked her to curl my hair. But okay if you're saying she didn't curl it, you're basically telling me that she wasn't listening. Roll the footage babe because I know damn well what happened. They told me to call at MY convenience, so I called literally 1 minute after the owner sent the text and I got met with "she isn't available" and "you actually need to book an appointment", so another lie of saying that it can be at my convenience. I told them whatever I just want the feedback link and they said they couldn't do that. No reason bedsides that. Julie didn't like that I was "rude" well guess what that is what happens when you try to be civil for three days and nobody is listening. She asked for my inspiration pic and I provided because one looks like cute graceful twisted/braided bun and one looks like a loaf that was slapped on the back of my head. Maybe the concept was there, but at the end of the day I know that's not what I wanted. There is a lot more I could say but I am over the energy wasted, just wanted to disclaim to other brides. Honestly super displeased with service all around. I am for sure repeating her to the board of cosmetology for poor hygiene and reporting it on the The Knot. read more

Disappointing experience. When the stylist showed me the final result at the salon, it looked fine because I only took a quick glance. But once I got home and looked closely, I noticed that my curtain bangs are completely uneven one side is noticeably shorter than the other. I'm honestly confused by all the positive reviews. I needed a new salon and after researching a few places I decided to try Top Style, in part because of the great reviews but also because the online scheduling was really easy. It's a small space but felt lively and welcoming and all the staff were friendly and helpful - I was greeted and checked in right away and then seated at the station just a few minutes later. My appointment was with Mark and even though I was just getting a basic cut, I liked that he took the time to listen to what was going on with my hair and what I was looking for. He asked specific followup questions when we were talking and I feel like that's always a good sign that a stylist is really paying attention and trying to understand what kind of cut/style you want. I took a makeup class with Lory and it was amazing! Not only is she a very talented makeup artist, she's patient and a wonderful instructor. She will recommend products at different price points but encourages you to bring your own makeup. She will show you how to apply different aspects of makeup and then has you practice so that she can give you hands on instruction. While the staff was incredibly friendly and I liked the process, now that I've seen the color in different lighting, it's not what I was hoping for. I was aiming for a honey blonde as shown in my reference photos, but the result is more of a caramel tone and I don't like it Also, I wanted to mention that the hair brushing and washing were a bit roughmy leg was actually twitching from the discomfort. I usually get highlights and a haircut from Kate but have tried different color appointments (balayage, pink/purple hair, highlights/lowlights) as well as different cuts/styling.
