Was here for a Christmas night out last night. First time I've been and I was pretty impressed. The place was absolutely packed with a lot of big parties on Xmas nights out and the staff really had their work cut out - must have been a nightmare shift!
The food was surprisingly good - I only say "surprising" because festive menus can be a little hit-or-miss. I usually think Xmas food is less good than the usual menu and sometimes you get the feeling they're just plating up pre-cooked dry turkey as quickly as possible and hoping everybody is too drunk to notice. However, the food here was really nice. I started with duck terrine wrapped in pancetta, which was pretty fantastic. The turkey was the standard Xmas dinner with roasties, chipolatas and a couple of sprouts but it was well presented and well cooked and the cheese selection at the end was good. Everybody else's food looked great too - even the veggie nut loaf looked tasty! The staff were friendly and chatty despite being really busy and apart from the fact that we got our tap water along with our fourth bottle of wine despite asking for it with every bottle of wine from when we first sat down, I can't fault them. (And that's a small thing and it was horribly busy so I feel a bit bad even mentioning it).
I'd be really interested to come back when it isn't Christmas and it isn't so busy or so loud. Based on last night's experience I'd expect a nice laid-back atmosphere in a cosy inn with friendly staff and good food. If I ever go back, I'll let you know! read more
