I couldn't find the location I visited near Far Out Lounge, but brand consistency runs high (they're basically all the same), at Tacoholics Anonymous! Healthy is not their specialty, but I tried the Bonfire Bowl, OK - heat is good, but needs more spinach. Churros are fantastic! Crispy, crunchy, cinnamon sugary, and great for sharing. There was a definite bottleneck in the line, with menus housed up front and patrons taking extra time self-ordering. It's now super close to where we live and we went for lunch on our move in day! I got a shrimp taco and a big salad that was so good! It had fresh herbs, pistachios, and a delicious dressing. I was pleasantly surprised by this taco chain. I took a mural tour during my trip to Austin and my tour guide, Caleb, recommended checking this place out. 5 STARS Torchy's Tacos is a staple when you visit Texas. I first discovered Torchy's over 10 years ago when I used to go to Austin for work, and every time I visited, I made sure to visit this location to have my favorite tacos and queso. The tacos run about $5-6 each, but these are humongous portions, and I normally order max 2, sometimes 3 if I am super hungry. I recommend ordering off of Torchy's "secret menu". Ask for it when you get to the front counter. Here's what I recommend ordering off the secret menu: * Matador taco - this one has chopped brisket, frilled jalapenos, pickled onions, served with tomatillo over a crispy corn torille inside a flour tortilla. I always get this taco every time I visit. It's my absolute fave. Get it. * Trailer Park Hillbilly Style - this one isn't for everybody because a lot of people don't think fried chicken belongs in a taco. But you should try it regardless - there is chorizo, chopped bacon, green chilies, and poblano ranch served over this one. It's delicious. From the regular menu, the fried avocado taco and the queso are also must-orders. They put a little chorizo with the green chile queso and it's so addicting. For such a large restaurant, ordering at Torchy's was a disaster at the South Congress location. We had a large party of 7 people and there was only the counter at the bar that was available for payment. It took forever for us just to place our orders and the place was relatively empty. I ordered the Democrat and the Baja Shrimp taco and they were just okay. One of my friends is vegan and specifically asked for guacamole without cheese on top. They waiter brought out guac with cheese and my friend asked them for one without cheese. Instead of bringing out a new serving of guac, they very obviously scraped off the cheese and brought the same dish back. I wasn't going to leave Austin without trying Torchy's at least once. The chain has a bunch of locations and this one in the South Congress area really hit the spot for great tacos and queso. We tried three different tacos: the Democrat (barbacoa), the Republican (jalopeno cheddar sausage), and the Baja Shrimp taco. To make sure we hit our calorie quotient for the year, we also ordered the queso dip with chips and the grilled corn. Putting politics aside, the Republican was simply outstanding. The sausage is terrific and really not too spicy. But it's a terrific flavor bomb. You have to order this one. The shrimp taco was fine and the Democrat was fine, too, but not spectacular. The queso and chips was very, very good. The corn was very fresh and flavorful but I wouldn't call it a "must" order. The lines get long but we were very lucky and missed the line entirely. After you order, they give you a weird buzzer thing you stick on your table, and then they find you and bring you your food. It's a good system that seems to work well. Living in San Diego, I am around so many different tacos. I didn't really want to come here having high expectations but I figured I'd give Torchy's Tacos a try while I was in town. I ordered the following: Fried chicken taco Shrimp taco Jamaican jerk chicken taco Churros Drink I ordered a fried chicken taco for my son not knowing what to expect. The taco seriously looked sad. It was just a piece of chicken strips and cheese on a flour tortilla. The cheese wasn't even melted or anything. He did end up finishing his taco, but still, it was a sad looking taco. The shrimp taco I had was super salty. The cook that day had a really heavy hand with the salt. I thought it was just me but when I mentioned to my sister that the shrimp taco was salty, she agreed with me. She had also ordered a shrimp taco. The jerk chicken taco was different, in a good way. It was REALLY spicy and I love spicy food so beware! I did enjoy the mango that offset the saltiness of the chicken. The contrast of the flavors meshed well together in this taco. Maybe I just stopped by on a bad day, but the tacos I got were way less than memorable. In fact, they were hardly edible. The ingredients of the migas taco were slapped haphazardly onto a tortilla with eggs on one end, a slice of avocado and hard chips sprinkled on the other end. The hard scrambled eggs were cool enough that the cheese (also dumped in a lump rather than scattered across the taco) never melted a bit. No way could you get all the flavors in one bite. (The best migas dishes have onion, peppers, eggs, cheese, and chips cooked together so the flavors are blended, rather than prepared separately and combined on a tortilla. It makes a huge difference in flavor.) Very disappointing. My other taco--potato, egg, and cheese--was no better, although it, too, was assembled with the eggs and potatoes being pre-cooked separately, rather than cooked together. Today, the potatoes were not completely cooked and had to be scraped off the taco, so I guess it was good that they were not cooked together. Made the scraping easier. Honestly.
