I've eaten at other Torchy's Tacos before and it is exactly what I had expected. Good food, reasonably priced, confortarle atmosphere.

There are multiple places to begin this review 1. After specifying a severe allergy multiple times, I was given the allergen and learned halfway through eating it they had gotten my order wrong 2. The store always seems just slightly dirty 3. When notified of allergen and the issue management just offered to make a new one. I love their brisket taco! Specifically The Republican taco, it is so good and hits every time. Their Elote corn side is also really good, the rice and beans are just okay. I would stick to their tacos, as my husband got a burrito once and it was really bad. I've also tried their queso once, and it was really good but SO spicy and I can usually handle spice. First visit to Torchy's Tacos, didn't really know what to expect. Verdict, we will be back So, they do have a bar, but it really is just a fast food joint. Tables are close together and it is LOUD. A plus, is the additional outside seating! If you order for pickup, orders are all the way in the back. When you walk in, you join a line to order your tacos and drinks. They will give you a numbered pager and you then select a table. Our queso came out almost as soon as we sat down and tacos followed pretty quickly. They were busy, so I assumed we'd we waiting a while. There were 4 or 5 people running orders, probably why it was fast. Plasticware is on the side counter by the fountain drinks. Napkins were on the table. Bar service took a little longer than food, drinks were good. People at the counter taking orders and food runner were all super friendly. They even checked that everything was OK after serving. I finally visited this place . I was kind of skeptical because I did not hear good reviews . But great area ! Nice customer service and food came out really fast . I ordered the crossroad taco and the husband the beef fajita taco . Because of the reviews we only order a taco each . The tacos was pretty small but surprisingly really good . My taco was juicy , tender and flavorful. The next time I would order without avocado because it was a bit mushy for my taste but still pretty tasty . Being that I'm originally from Texas, Houston to be exact, I was super stoked to see that Torchy's Tacos was coming to RVA! I was invited as a VIP guest before opening day and had a wonderful time. The service and food was just as I remembered it; AMAZING! The bartender Ebony was so kind and welcoming. All the staff was great. We started out with the green chile queso & chips. It has a nice spicy kick to it so if you don't like spicy beware. It was delicious! For tacos: TRAILER PARK: fried chicken green chiles, pico de gallo & cheddar jack cheese with poblano sauce on a flour tortilla. We made it trashy by removing lettuce and adding queso. It was full of flavor! DEMOCRAT: barbacoa that melts in your mouth, onions & cilantro, cotija cheese and tomatillo sauce. Instead of a corn tortilla I opted for the four tortilla. It was sooo good! REPUBLICAN: jalapeño cheddar sausage, pico, poblano sauce and cheddar jack cheese on a flour tortilla. Super tasty! BAJA SHRIMP: fried shrimp, cooked cabbage slaw, pickled onions, chipotle sauce and cotija cheese on a flour tortilla. Sooo good! Of course we had to have the delicious flavorful street corn. I totally to forgot to order churros so don't forget like me lol. They have a full bar and we ordered the sangria swirl and peach margaritas. Both very tasty! P.S. Ask about the secret menu. We had an excellent lunch at Torchy's today. We thought we would beat the lunch rush by going at 2pm but the place was chocker-block full. But we still were able to grab a spot at the bar and were quickly waited on. DH and I shared a full serving of street corn (elote!) and several different tacos - a democrat, a green chile pork and 2 crossroads. I like corn tortillas and DH likes flour and you get your choice. All of the tacos were very tasty. But we especially liked the street corn, so much so that DH has found a copy cat recipe so we can make it at home. For it being so busy, the service at the bar was very good. It is very loud in there (because everything is concrete and glass, nothing to absorb noise). Maybe they could get some sound baffling? We wanted to see what's the hype and high ratings are about at Torchy's, and we got to try those tacos from Austin, Texas. Tacos are delish, huge, and tasty. I was impressed with their ingredients and love the variety of sauces. Please read the descriptions of the tacos I got and devoured. - Crossroads [GET]: My favorite of the night. Brisket is tender, melts in your mouth kind of texture. The jalapenos were bold and spicy, but in a great way. I love the extra kick and flavors it adds to the taco, and it also balanced perfectly with the creamy and perfectly ripe avocado. There's a ton of cilantro as well, so if cilantro doesn't taste like soap to you, definitely try this one. - Baja Shrimp [GET]: My second favorite of the night. There's around 4 to 5 pieces of fried shrimp, well-seasoned and battered. They are fresh, juicy, and high-quality. The exterior was so crunchy and crispy. I love the pickled onions and cole slaw too, added that tangy and acidity flavors. Make sure to add the chipotle sauce too for that creaminess texture. The flour tortilla is nicely toasted and got a slight crisp on the edges. - Chicken Fajita [GET]: Typical flavors you were expect, but a solid and safe choice. I do like the chicken a lot though, it's tender, juicy, and well-marinated. I was saying to my sister that it tasted like the chicken from Chipotle combined with their fajitas. Nothing too special, rather pretty mediocre. - Democrat [SKIP]: The beef barbacoa was very well-cooked and tender but lack flavors. Sadly, I had to return this back to the kitchen, because of how greasy it was, literally dripping oil everywhere on my hand. I know it will upset my stomach, since I eat quite healthy most of the time. They were really nice about it, and they replaced it with the beef brisket (crossroads). Ambiance: 4/5 - Newly opened, the interior decor is fresh and clean. I like the bold red colors and logos. Tons of tables, bar seating, and outdoor seating available. Despite it being packed, we were able to get a table fairly quick. Loud music blasting in the background and people talking, so expect it to be super loud. Not an ideal place to bring a date here, but with friends though, the ambiance is energetic and lively. Price: 4/5 - Each taco ranges from $5 to $6, which seems a bit on the pricier side, but they are quite decently sized and worth it. My sister and I each got three tacos to try, and with three you will be more than satisfied and be full. We both eat a lot, so I approve of the portions here. Service: 4/5 - The people here are really welcoming and kind, definitely can feel the Southern hospitality. There're staffs coming by to check-in on us to make sure we were doing okay while we wait for the food, it took a while. There're staffs coming over constantly to pick up our trash and ask if we need anything else. Expect delayed in services, since they are super busy. BLUF: A Mexican street style tacos originated from Austin, Texas. The tacos are huge, love the unique flavors and combinations of different ingredients. I would recommend getting the Crossroads and the Baja Shrimp tacos, and you will enjoy it, because I did. My husband and I stopped into Torchy's shortly after they opened to try out their tacos. I'd heard great things! We're from Arizona and tacos are our comfort food, so I was excited to check out a new place offering some neat fusion tacos. The location is clean and the employees were friendly. The location can be a little tricky to get into depending on traffic, but it isn't bad and the parking is plentiful. We shared three tacos - a baja shrimp, the democrat, and the brushfire. First impression was that they're expensive. The shrimp taco was more than $6, and both of the others were over $5 per taco. That seems pretty high to me, but I hoped that they would be worth it. The shrimp taco was delicious. It contained juicy, perfectly cooked, and seasoned shrimp. The pickled onions provide a sweet acid layer thar really compliments the sauce it comes with. I would 100% order this taco again, even though I don't agree with paying over $6 a taco. However, the other two were lacking. The Democrat's meat was a consistency reminiscent of something already chewed and paired with the texture of a ripe avocado, I couldn't finish it. There were no contrasting textures whatsoever. Just mush. The bushfire taco was too salty, though I liked the salsa offering, and the grilled jalapeño provided a great kick to the chicken. Overall, I think there are better and less expensive taco options in the area (like Big Chile), but I would be willing to give it another try once the new kitchen kinks have been worked out. read more

Finally made it to check this new place everybody been talking about. Stopped by for a late lunch on Monday to avoid crazy crowd and long lines I heard about. It wasn't busy, we grabbed menus and walked straight to the counter where you order. Person taking orders was very nice, we ordered 3 tacos, famous queso that everyone was raving about and churros. We picked our table and poured soft drinks - they were out of cola syrup, it was just clear soda coming out but didn't bother me much. Our food came out very fast. Server that brought it was very pleasant and came to check on us to make sure all is well. I liked their queso, it has a nice kick, perfect thickness to scoop it up with warm crispy chips, it's topped with a little scoop of guacamole and sprinkle of cotija cheese, normally comes with Diablo sauce but I asked to be on side and was happy that I did bc I didn't like the taste at all and queso was already spicy enough for me. We shared three tacos - fried avocado - had high hopes for this one but didn't like it, has refried beans that are mushy and fried avocado that is mushy inside so it lacked texture, comes with poblano sauce that was ok. Second taco we had was tipsy chick - that one was pretty good, moist grilled chicken, chipotle sauce, grilled corn, green chiles, cheddar cheese and spinach - not sure why spinach was there lol and bacon bourbon marmalade on a side - marmalade I didn't like it so much, just didn't go with this taco in my opinion it had pieces of bacon and it was sweet but just try it first before you put it on. Third taco - chicken fajita was also very tasty - grilled chicken with onions and peppers, cheese and pico de gallo - classic! To finish our lunch we had churros - delicious! There are 5 per order, crispy and freshly fried, rolled in cinnamon sugar and they come with dulce de leche sauce, might come again just for these! Restaurant is new, clean and I'm assuming decorated like any other Torchy Taco, something between fast food and sit down restaurant. They have happy hour Mon-Fri 3p-6p with drink specials. Torchy's Tacos -- the place for great dips and appetizers! 10/10 recommend the green chilé queso and chips! The queso is topped with guacamole, cotija cheese, cilantro and Diablo sauce (not too hot, don't worry). There is an option to "upgrade" your queso with chorizo aka the "hillbilly queso". 8/10 for the guacamole. It's a simple dish with chunks of avocado inside of it, topped with cotija cheese. If there was fresh limes + garlic salt to add to it, then it would be a 10/10. Taco wise, there are a lot of options to choose from: vegetarian, chicken, pork, fish, fried, grilled, etc. Prepare to order at least two tacos because they aren't too big. Torchy's does have a new "taco flavor" every single month! If you're in the mood for an alcoholic drink, there is a bar inside. Seating wise, there is indoor and outdoor seating. I've been here twice and each time was great! I always get the Hillbilly queso and chips! It's a little spicy, but delicious. There's a good balance of cheese and chorizo, so it's hearty but not too heavy. I've tried a few of the tacos, the beef's fajita was my favorite, but all that I've tried have been good. Every time I go I try something different and I haven't been disappointed yet. I always get my tacos on flour tortillas (my preference), so I'm not sure if that makes a difference taste wise. read more

We had the most amazing experience at the richmond torchy tacos! We wanted to introduce my son to the restaurant and he only motivated to try it because of the churros. We were so disappointed when we arrived to learn they didn't have them today so we got the cookie instead. As the manager, Gabe, stopped by we shared that we were glad to be "saved" by the cookie and shared how we came for the churro. A few mins later the manager came out with churros for my son!! He said they were so busy earlier they stopped making them but since they slowed down he was happy to make them for him. It was so kind of Gabe to check on us and then make my sons day! Drove by here and saw this restaurant while going out to shop at Short Pump mall. I heard about Torchy's Tacos being good, so my group decided to check it out, after some shopping. Overall, I do not recommend this restaurant. We waited over 35 minutes for an order of 5 tacos, and the food did not come out hot or warm at all. The photos make the food look so good! But the reality was that it was not. We found the taco vegetables to be very sour, especially the the pickled onions. In terms of the Baja shrimp, the fried shrimp was a little too salty. For over $5/$6 per specialty taco, you would expect to get more quality out of the price you pay. read more

I am from Texas originally, and was so excited to see a place I went to in college pop up in Virginia! Torchy's has seriously good tex-mex- I would recommend anything on the menu. I was very impressed with their menu online, which made ordering with a food allergy really accessible and stress-free- they had ingredients clearly listed and we could easily remove or add things to any item. The staff were very kind. The inside is huge, and a little noisy in busy time (loud music and talking), so just keep that in mind, though we took our food to-go. I have tried Torchys a few times and always land on takeout! The ticket times for my order are always pretty long. As this is a newer establishment I'm sure they are still trying to find their footing with ticket times. Torchy's Queso is addictive! I've been to Torchy's 2x, we ordered lunch the first time, it was ok. Thought I'd give it a 2nd try and still not too impressed. Place is nice, great location. I've had the Chicken Fajita taco, the queso, not a fan. The corn tortilla was very grainy which didn't help the chicken, it fell apart. The chips were good, queso not so much, a bit salty. I've gotten various types of tacos and they are all so good!! It really just depends on your taste in tacos and what you'd prefer in terms of protein options. Judging from the location and space while getting my picking up my order, it's pretty spacious but it also gets super busy!!! If you do take out, you would order via app or website and pick up in the designated area. The process is pretty smooth. The parking lot was crowded due to being part of the Short Pump view. Since it was late lunch time I didn't have a wait time. The menu is a la carte which was something new. I ordered the trailer park chicken taco with Mexican rice. The service was quick and the young lady at the front answered all questions. I received my cup to get my fountain drink( I choose sweet tea) and choose a window seat to await my food. I didn't have to wait long and I admit I was hungry. My taco was juicy and provided mouthful of delicious relief to my palate. My rice was moist & very flavorful. I like to add the rice to the taco for an added treat. And it truly payed off. It was an added bonus that staff came over to the table to make sure all was well and offered to refill my drink. The parking lot was already packed by 12:30 PM when we got there. There were no menus available at the door because the line was so long and everyone in front already got one. They were out of the Midnight Cowboy Taco unfortunately and so I ended up ordering a Baja Shrimp and a Mr.Orange with some street corn. My wife went with the Fried avocado and a Mr.Orange also and for dessert the lil' nookies. The orders came really fast, the tacos were pretty regular in size (6 inches) and the portion of corn was pretty small. Taste wise it was all pretty good but nothing surprising, with me and my wife agreeing that the best one was the Baja Shrimp. Street corn was very 'meh' (best way to describe it) with a LOT of sauce on it. When I looked at the calories it was 433 calories for maybe 3/4 cup of corn! I was scared. In the end, eating 2 tacos and the corn I already almost passed my daily intake of calories. I came out still hungry because of the small portion and having ate a lot of calories already didn't feel 'damn good'. Price was a bit much for the amount of food also. The bathroom floors were cleaned with something that left it very slippery which could cause accidents. In the end my consensus was that it was definitely not worth it. read more

Short version: Food is fine -- but not worth the price. I lived in Texas for over 10 years and had Torchy's at least a dozen times. I just went to this one after hearing it opened in the Richmond area. Overall, it was the same experience I remember from Texas. My favorite item at Torchy's is still the spicy queso. My preferred taco is the Democrat, although sometimes the barbacoa is too fatty and chewy. I do appreciate the creativity they put into creating their tacos of the month. So you can always try something unique. And a chorizo, egg, and cheese breakfast taco is worth a try at some point. The food is good but nothing to rave about. You can find more authentic and better-tasting tacos at pretty much any small, individual/family-owned Mexican restaurant in the area. And those restaurants typically won't charge you ~$6 per taco. Torchy's continues to overcharge. You're looking at over $11 for two tacos, folks. And that doesn't include tax, drinks, or chips and queso. I won't be back any time soon. Too many other tasty, reasonably-priced alternatives out there. read more

There was a lot of hype around this place and when we walked in to a completely full restaurant with a huge line I figured it must be good. The ordering happens at the register and then you get a buzzer to let you know when your food is ready. It was so busy we had to stand while we waited. The price for one taco is pretty absurd. Over $5 for one medium sized taco. I got the Mofaux (vegetarian) taco and rice and beans and although the food was fine tasting, I'd rather go somewhere that gives me more food for the price with even better taste.
