This place is okay not all the meats were flavored as I wanted it's good for some skewers but others had no flavor and wasn't that good. We ordered a lot because we wanted to try a range of different things. This was my first time here and we spent about $50 a person because portions are small and it's how the Japanese style meat skewers are. This place is mostly for drinking I recommend eating slowly or else you'll accumulate a crazy expensive bill. Don't order all at once. But yeh my fave thing here is the jawaiian fries other than that idk what other foods I liked here. This was just for experience I would not come here again unless for drinking and light snacking. Stopped by for some Japanese comfort food after a rather terrible round of golf. Left feeling much better lol. The food here is just as my grandma would have made. And that's a rare thing to find these days honestly. Many places in Honolulu are fusion, pan pacific, trendy things. But some times you wanna slow down, not try to pronounce French or Italian nuances, and eat a simple, delicious meal. And that's where this place comes in! Yakitori is perfect, nothing fancy, just good pieces of chicken on a stick. Menu is off a sheet you write on, this definitely would help to both improve accuracy and mitigates COVID, if that's your jam. Parking is tight, but the Izakaya next door is closed on Sundays which scored us a stall easily. Salt or sauced? Tried everything both ways if there was an option, both are good. Some dishes served with hot mustard was good with salt, others had a lemon wedge. Really enjoyed the ochazuke, I'm not gonna lie it's better than most other places. I got it with the salmon inside, umami and delicious. Miso grilled musubi was good also but the shoyu style really brings back memories. Will definitely be back for another round. There's the drink... try the yuzu shochu.. thank me later. Cons: parking can be difficult with only a few spots. It can be a bit hard to find, it's tucked away behind pucks alley next to imanas tei.. google maps will take you to the wrong location. They tend to get a bit busy, so make reservations early! The parking lot was full, but we got lucky with street parking close by. We called for reservations 30 minutes prior and requested a window seat. The restaurant was busy but the servers still took the time to greet us and serve us in a timely manner. They have a unique way of placing an order. There is a order sheet that you put the quantity of an item in a square box. Then give the sheet to the server, a brilliant idea! We ordered an assortment of yakitori food-on-a-stick along with musubis, gyoza, and ochazuke. Everything was tasty and well perfected. It all came out minutes apart. We topped it off with dessert chocolate and pistachio gelato. It was very cool and soothing. It was a lot of food with leftovers boxed up for tomorrow's breakfast. This place is one of my favorite Yakitori spots! Parking is small so if there's none in the front lot, go around and get lucky street parking by Sushi King like we do! Service is friendly and they take reservations so we got a table at 6:30pm. It got busy right after! We ordered an assortment of yakitori items, ochazuke, musubis, and gyoza. Everything was tasty and made well. For dessert, we tried the chocolate and pistachio gelato. It was smooth and refreshing! Bill was around $80. Came here after reading some good reviews. It's a fairly small restaurant and warning to those with kids, they do not have any highchairs... The menu is pretty simple with choices of yakitori items and a few others. Of all the yakitori items, the beef tongue was yummy, as well as most of the veggies and the yuzu chicken. We got a chicken ramen which was decent as well. The items came out pretty fast and hot! Would definitely come back more if they had more kid friendly seating. Torikyu offers an intimate space with classic izakaya dishes in a less crowded area of Honolulu (but still crowded, to be clear). The service was attentive, and I love the atmosphere of sitting at the bar watching the cook grill our food, even if it took a little longer. We ordered a selection of grilled foods, hot pot and sake. I am not an expert on sake, but the prices were not bad for dine-in service. We paid $20 for our bottle of sake--about a $5 markup from what you would pay at Don Quixote. The hot pot was just OK--we got the spicy but not at all spicy--but it was a nice accompaniment to the grilled foods, which are definitely the draw for Torikyu. For each of the meats, you can choose salt or teriyaki for seasonings, and each one we ordered was perfectly cooked and crispy. I recommend the chicken with green onions and the bacon wrapped asparagus. The food is comforting and exactly the kind of place I like to take my friends to catch up with over a bottle of sake. It was relatively easy to get a reservation here (call ahead at least 3 days in advance, though -- unlike some izakaya places that are booked over a week out). Parking is a bit tough. Expect to park along King Street since they share the parking lot with another popular Japanese restaurant that opens a bit earlier. read more

We've came here a few times, and always during the late night hours. Yes, a small spot that feels like a 'hole in the wall' type place, but for some reason, Japanese nationals find this place. I'm not sure if they are visitors or transplants from Japan, but if they crowd this place, then you know this place has to be legit; and it is. The parking is very small and because the place has to share with other business next door and upstairs from it, sometimes obtaining parking is tough, but not impossible. When you walk in, the place a dimly lit and the staff is friendly. The food there is very good, as you order through check marks on a prepared checklist they have stocked at your table. If you can find parking on the street, this place is a good spot for yakitori! We ordered a bunch of items from bacon wrapped asparagus, bacon wrapped quail egg, shiso chicken, gizzard, heart, cartilage, deep fried oysters, Tsukune with mentaiko, and wasabi chicken. I wouldn't recommend the wasabi chicken because it's literally wasabi slabbed on it. You must get the cheese wontons though! So buttery and there's actual cheese in it, not some places where the cheese disappears because it melted. All the sticks were tasty and came out pretty quickly. We made reservations at 7:30 and it was necessary. I would recommend this place if you are craving yakitori, but be prepared to search for parking for at least 10+ minutes! read more

A hidden gem located behind Puck's Alley. If you're looking for delicious and authentic yakitori, come to Torikyu! We had a Saturday night reservation for a party of 9 (!) and they accommodated us well. They even let us move our tables so we can sit together. I forgot to take pictures because I was too excited to eat! My personal favorites were the bacon-wrapped enoki mushroom, beef tongue, tofu agedashi, and the spicy hot pot with beef intestines! Before I start I would like to say I am not rating the food because we did not even get a chance to eat here, and let me explain why. We had made a phone call to book our reservation, but when we came in, the guy we talked to could not find it. He then told us, without checking what number we had called, that we called the wrong number and made a reservation for the restaurant next door and that he can't seat us because they are booked anyways. Sounded strange because we were pretty certain we did not mess up the number, but the speed he dismissed us made it seem like it was a usual occurrence so we thought, benefit of the doubt, maybe the number google had up was wrong somehow because when we later showed him the number we called, he immediately said that is not their number. Spoiler alert: it was! LOL We went to the restaurant next door to double check, and as we suspected we did not make a reservation to the wrong restaurant. Looks like whoever we spoke to on the phone did not write the reservation down. We then re-called the number we had called to book the reservation, which was the number google has up, and the number the worker insisted was not theirs, to confirm the location and phone number, and it was definitely Torikyu, and most certainly the location we were at. So either the worker gaslit us into thinking we called the wrong place or he doesn't know the phone number of the restaurant he works at LOL both are very ridiculous, but either way they did not take our reservation down. To top it off, while we were on the phone to confirm the location and phone number of Torikyu and double check the guy we spoke to just didn't just miss it somehow, the woman on the phone said that we could be seated now if we wanted, even though the guy we spoke to said there was no seating LOL make it make sense. At this point, we obviously do not want to eat here anymore. I've never had such a bad and ridiculous situation happen like this before. I understand human error happens, and that someone may not have taken the reservation down, but the way we were dismissed into thinking we booked for the wrong location and told there was no seating, but then 5 minutes later over the phone told that we could be seated immediately by a different staff member was ridiculous. Mostly my gripe is with the male worker who we spoke to who was very dismissive of us. We will not be eating here. read more

Torikyu is a little slice of authentic Japanese comfort food for me! I lived in Japan for almost 4 years and my family and I love going here to remind us of the awesome food of japan! Best to call ahead to make a reservation as they fill up fast. Staff is always pleasant and patient with us even when we are in a large group! Yuzu Chu-Hi is my absolute favorite and most of the Yakitori sticks are bomb. Love going here every chance we get! This place grills their foods so it reminds me a lot of that food truck called Da Ala Cart but instead of standing in front or around a lunch wagon area, you sit in a very nice Japanese-themed restaurant setting. The medium-sized restaurant is in its own building just off King Street sort of just behind & between Puck's Alley & 7-11, almost across the street from Oahu Mexican Grill. There are two parking lots right in front of the restaurant with a road going through the two lots. Inside there are bench tables to sit on or one can sit at the counter to watch them grill. A good portion of the restaurant is taken up by the grilling kitchen. There's also a separate restroom inside to the right if you need it. This must be one of those places that's just not my thing. Service was pretty perfect and I had a very good experience here hanging out with my Yeep friends, Daven H., Lora C., Mel B., & Nadine C., but the taste of the food and food offerings just did not entice my taste buds to dance with tantalization. I ordered a bunch of different items, grilled and fried, & even a fresh salad. If I'm going to invest my time & money in a restaurant like this, I'd like to see the following: - Fresh veggies that are grilled well, not black and charred, and are well-seasoned, softened, a bit crunchy, flavorful, and delicious - Salads that are fresh, crunchy, and tasty with a dressing that pairs well with the flavors of the greens - Rice balls that are prepared special in some way, something that I wouldn't normally make at home or outdoes what I would normally prepare at home - Meats are sliced opposite the grain and cooked to perfection, soft & flavorful - Fair price in quality & quantity Problem is I'm really not much of a beef, pork, chicken, or innards eater so I found a lot of veggie things to order. They don't have lamb, turkey, or fish. They don't have typical menus. Instead, you obtain a length of paper that contains a list of their menu items and you mark the quantity of each one that you want to order. It does not contain much descriptive wording (there's no space) so you'll have to ask the wait staff to explain what you are not familiar with. Simply mark your items and give the paper to your server. Your food items will come pretty quickly. You can begin eating and your other dishes will likely be served shortly. The food items are gently grilled not too black and not overcooked or sautéed, and most of their menu is ala carte. It seemed the items were all seasoned very mildly, mostly with some oil and some salt. For me, the seasoning was not enough to make it very flavorful and this is surprising to hear coming from me, someone who usually really appreciates mildly seasoned foods. I love the taste of grilled items but there's not much quantity of product provided for the price. "Onion" is sold as just a slice of an onion grilled on a skewer stick. Somehow I just thought $2 would be more than ONE slice of a fairly large onion. One onion can be cut into a bunch of slices; at the grocery store, a good price for produce on sale is less than $1 per pound. - The asparagus was THREE shoots cut into 2-3 sections, shiitake mushrooms was TWO halved mushrooms, & onion was ONE large not too thin slice, all $2 each, were grilled OK & not seasoned much. For $6 total, I didn't feel this was a good value. Taste-wise, they seemed only very lightly seasoned with a small bit of oil & salt. - The oysters sat in a mild, sort-of-tasty shoyu were OK - The grilled pork onion & chicken tendon were both OK but the coloring of both looked kind of raw even though they were cooked. Both felt like they should have been grilled a deeper, darker color (there's no caramelization) & with more seasoning. - The Korean salad greens were an unusual combination of wet seaweed on top leafy green lettuce with a salad dressing that was too vinegary. The salad greens were made more bitter by the accompanying dressing. In total, the taste of the dressing did not meld well with or enhance the bitter greens. - The miyozoku was good-slimy vinegary - The grilled miso musubi item was OK with the thick layer of straight miso on top but did not taste all too special. The rice could have been grilled more. I do love the taste of almost burnt rice. - The fried cheese item was not puffy cute but instead was flattish & did not contain much cheese. Taste-wise, one cannot go wrong with fried won ton pi + cheese. My bill came to about $35 and I thought I'd have lots of yummy leftovers to take home but instead, I was just-stuffed full bc there was not going to be much to take home and my tastebuds somehow were never satisfied. Tastes are OK; there's just not enough food provided for price. Food cut up into smaller pieces & grilled as skewers is only kawaii-cute if it is flavored well AND indeed fills one up otherwise it is just torture to the wallet & to the starving tummy. Food tastes better when you're hungry! I saved my tummy all day for this dinner! My friends and I agreed to try this Yakitori style restaurant. None of us had been here before. I was so excited! Using GPS, my phone wanted me to go to Varsity Avenue, but the address was King Street. I parked free at Puck's Alley in front of The Nook and walked around the block towards 7 Eleven. The unlit shop sign doesn't stand out from the bright orange sign of the neighboring restaurant. There were a few open stalls in front of the restaurant for my friends, so it all worked out. Service was excellent! For a small shop, the wait staff was so attentive with water and ordering. Each of us filled out our own form to indicate what we wanted. We wrote our names on the top and it helped with the separate checks. I had the tonkatsu, ume musubi, shitake mushroom, salmon musubi, grilled shrimp, and fried oyster. The best thing was the bacon wrapped asparagus! I just inhaled! It made me want to come back and try the bacon wrapped Enoki mushrooms! The other yummy item was the Grilled Cheese. .. I luv cheese, so it was a natural. There was a bit of salt on the slightly crisp wrapper, but I liked it! New experience + great food + excellent service + free parking + pleasant ambiance = 5 stars. This place is a little restaurant located next to the Pucks Alley complex. Parking is difficult, but just park in Pucks alley instead of trying to find lot or street parking. Food here is delicious! Daikon salad with Ume dressing was perhaps the biggest surprise to me. Loved the fresh grated daikon with the tangy sour dressing. This is a true yakitori place that serves up all those delicious delicacies on skewers freshly made to order! Located next to the very popular Imanas, parking can be challenge as there is a tiny parking lot they both share. Your best bet is to make reservations and show up a bit early and wait it out for one of those coveted parking spaces. That's what we did, and ended up with front door parking. With a party of four, it gave us a chance to really try out a bunch of their various goodies! * Korean Style Salad ($4.95) - A simple salad of greens, seaweed, Korean dressing, and sprinkled with green onions. Refreshing, but very basic. * Bacon Wrapped Enoki Mushrooms ($2.25) - I think the everyone knows that anything wrapped in bacon is good, and this is no exception with the enoki mushrooms. * Bacon Wrapped Quail Eggs ($2.25) - One of those things you have to eat hot while the yolk will melt in your mouth. * Chicken Skin ($1.95) - Not everyone's cup of tea, but it's mine and with a nice sprinkling of salt on top. I like the fatty crispiness of it. * Shiokara ($3.40) - This was our surprise dish, only because we didn't know what it was when we ordered it. Ultimately it was raw squid or octopus that sits in a fermented (salty and fishy) sauce. It's quite strong and is an acquired taste. We liked it but our fellow diners took one look and taste to it and pushed it away. * Cold Tofu ($3.40) - Topped with Japanese mustard, bonito flakes and green onions, it's a refreshing dish that's enjoyable for those who like cold tofu dishes. * Chicken Thigh ($1.80) * Chicken Thigh with Green Onion ($1.95) - Although it says it's served with green onions, ours were actually skewered with white onions. It's a simple skewered piece of meat that the Husband really likes. * Ahi Poke ($5.90) - Chunks of tuna tossed with a poke marination and topped with white onions and green onions. * Tayoyaki ($4.90) - Six octopus balls sprinkled with bonito flakes and drizzled with a brown sauce and a side of Japanese mayonnaise. * Ankou Liver ($6.80) - Three pieces of monkfish liver with a ponzu dipping sauce. It was our cousin's first time eating it and she loved it. * Fried Quail Egg ($1.80) - A light batter on three of these eggs, again something you enjoy when it's hot and the yolk melts in your mouth. * Baked Rice Ball with Miso ($2.10) - Very basic rice ball with miso spread on it. Nothing special about it. * Fried Tofu ($4.90) - Tasty deep fried tofu with a dashi soup broth and sprinkled with bonito flakes and green onions. * Rice Ball with Cod Roe ($2.25) - A basic rice ball wrapped in seaweed with some cod roe in it. Unmemorable. * Fried gizzard ($4.40) - These deep fried crispy buggers were so good! They were light and had a nice texture. I couldn't get enough of them! * Fried Fish Sausage ($4.40) - Another deep fried goody that our cousin really liked. * Chicken Heart ($1.80) - I like the texture of the hearts, but some people aren't that fond of them. A pencil and menu are available on each table so you can constantly add to your meal with their ticket. Just be sure to let the waiter know you have one for pick up so they can pass it on to the kitchen, otherwise you'll be waiting forever. As suggested by other yelpers, don't put all your skewer tickets in at once because they will come out too fast and then get cold as you can't get into them quick enough. Still a great place, parking is limited, i always make reservations for when they open at 6, and have no problem getting one right in front. The food was great as usual The favorites: Bacon Wrapped enoki mushrooms Chicken Meatball with teriyaki sauce Deep fried squid legs Shoyu Yaki oniniri (roasted rice ball) Negima (Chicken with green onion) with salt Teba (Chicken wing) with salt Sausage (pork) Chicken tail Other stuff: Shrimp Chicken thigh (salt) Chicken breast (wasabi) Asparagus Gizzard Ginko nuts Dislikes: Quail egg I'm giveing it 4.5 stars, service was quick attentive, food was still solid, just not as good as i remember the first time, guess the first time is always the best. Still highly recomended Tips: Go at 6 or a few minutes early to get a parking space. Love yakitori and how it reminds me of going out in Japan. Have been to this place several time and surprised that I hadn't reviewed it but I think I did when it was kohnotori and then never updated it when the name changed. The latest time we went was a Friday night after working or just on a whim. We waited for a table about half an hour. The servers were a bit overwhelmed so even though seats were opening up it took them some time to clear them out. Parking is free but super limited here since it's only about ten spaces and they share it with imanas tei. Park and pay in the nijiya lot or find metered street parking. We had parked and paid at UH where we workout and had to walk back. The walk is dark and sketchy and murdery so don't do it alone. Here's a tip - when ordering just use one checklist per table. So you order by filling out the paper on the table and writing the number of orders you want. We went with another couple and each couple filled out a paper without confirming what the other had ordered and we were all hungry. So you can imagine the quantity of food that arrived. We ate til we were stuffed. That being said we all had drinks and couldn't finish the food and the bill was $75 per couple. We thought that was really reasonable for the amount of food we had. Decent selection of sake and one order of it comes in a small jug which is plenty for one person if you just wanna enjoy and not get blasted. We had the kubota senju for $11. Very reasonable for the amount of sake. All the sticks are good - standouts are the shishito, pork with onion and bacon wrapped asparagus. Side dishes are also good including the tako wasabi, cheese wonton, buta kimchi, cold okra. Ordered the nabe for the first time and it was really good. Got their basic soup and extra cabbage and the ramen noodles to add at the end. By the time the hotpot arrived we were super full but ate more anyways it was that good. As one of our friends pointed out it was super hot "a thousand degrees" and the pot itself is quite mobile on the range. So be careful and don't be blotto when you order this or you'll be getting some bad scald burns. Have sat at the counter before also. All of it is good. Private bathrooms. Will be coming here regularly when we want yakitori and no need to go somewhere else. This is a staple. read more

Usually we get seated in the regular chairs and tables, this time we sat at the yakitori bar. The past times I have been here were always good. Honestly this experience was pretty bad. I mean from the very beginning to the end of my experience here. First of all, when I went to take my seat, I grabbed the chair to move it back so I can take a seat and A NAIL STABBED MY FINGER. A very painful and unpleasing way to start my evening... To top it off my finger was bleeding -_-. Tried to notify a waitress about the nail in the chair, but I don't think she could understand what I was trying to say either T_T The waitress we had didn't seem to speak very good English... Tried to order the whiskey they had on special and she asked 'on the rocks?' or at least that's what it sounded like, but we wanted it straight up (no ice), then she ended up bringing it to us with ice... FAIL. The food tonight, wasn't as good as it usually is when we order it. So I am not too sure if they had it sitting out for a while or if the quality just wasn't as good as other nights. read more

*Drooling* I am always happy when I get to go Kohnotori. Good food, good beer, good company. A picture perfect food experience. Just one of those places that you could have fun and enjoy your food. I love their takoyaki balls, enoki wrapped with bacon, chicken meatball, beef tongue, bacon wrapped asparagus, miso rice ball, chicken, and sooo much more. I cant list them all. Staff are always polite and smiley. Soo much variety to choose from. Grilled meat with beer, GOOD. Excuse me, I gotta make some dinner plans. read more

When I go to any Japanese restaurant, there's always one thing they have in common, they take much pride of their food and service. They honestly do. The other thing that they have in common that is only the downfall is the parking, the parking is awful. But the service and food are well worth it. My best friend took us here one night because they kept raving on about the food and mostly one particular item on their menu, their chicken liver yakitori. So we went and enjoyed the night. It's pretty cool how you order, they have order sheets that you fill out for each round you want. I honestly thought everything we ordered was good. I even ordered the ramen, I don't know what brand they used for it but it was good quality. That chicken liver was so creamy, almost close to pate. Highly recommend it! This place is good for outings and hang outs with friends. You drink, eat, repeat until they pretty much close. The prices are reasonable and worth your while. read more
