Taking a solo trip to Turin I hopped on a train and arrived at Porta Nuova. There are 20 platforms and the interior is modern. There is a police office right inside the station near platform 18 and the restrooms are on platform 20. It costs €1 to enter the restroom, so have change ready. (After a long ride, those train restrooms can become pretty nasty, so bathroom location is good to know!)
There were quite a few ticket counters at the station, but none were open during my visit (on a Wednesday). There are plenty of ticket machines however. Just tap your language choice and follow the prompts. Be sure to validate your ticket before getting on the train as there is a fine if the ticket is not validated. The machines are located at the beginning of the platforms. Insert the ticket in any direction and the machine will stamp it with the date and time. (This is standard procedure for any train in Italy. If you buy a ticket on line, you do not validate it as those are 'non-transferable'.)
There are plenty of stores located inside the terminal. Just inside (near platform 6 I think?) is a chocolate shop. Turin is famous for chocolate so you can pick up some gifts on your way home and not have to carry them around with you. Clothes stores, a Hudson News stand, McD's, bars (coffee shops) and restaurants are all located in the station. There are two floors with escalators going up (no down), and staircases. An elevator is available in the center of the station.
You can easily get to the metro and buses from this station or walk if the weather is fine. From the platform walk straight to the other side of the building to exit and continue to walk straight to get to the museums. Or, turn right upon exiting to get to the Po river and park. There are several hotels across the side street to your left (as you exit the station). Metro access is down the staircase on the sidewalk and the bus stop is across the street. Porta Nuova is a really great location for getting into and out of Turin. read more
