Tips: - This newspaper is Canadian-owned. - Sign up for a synopsis of top stories that gets sent to your inbox for free. I grew up with the Saturday Toronto Star. My dad would always get the Saturday edition each week. It had Starweek, the entertainment magazine with TV listings, crossword puzzles, and more. I don't think this magazine exists anymore. I liked the comics and entertainment sections the most. Over the years, I ended up reading everything. When I was looking for a summer job, I'd look at the classifieds. I managed to work a couple of summers during my high school years. There's currently a digital subscription special. It's $1 for six months of online access. After that period, it's $28 a month. I believe that after a certain number of article reads that you do online, you get a message to subscribe. I oddly don't get it now and I'm not sure why. I do subscribe to getting a daily synopsis of tops stories in my inbox. It's nice to be informed. The Food and Drink section is great. I like the occasional recipe and what's trending in the greater Toronto area. I also like restaurant recommendations, including the best diners in the GTA. I'll probably stick to accessing articles digitally than getting the physical paper delivered to my door. Getting the top stories in my inbox for free is nice. (100) read more

Similar to what others here have experienced, Toronto Star continues to charge me despite my numerous emails requesting this be stopped. They don't reimburse me, let alone email me back. I expected so much more from this newspaper. read more

The Toronto Star double charged my credit card for 4 months. For the month of December they charged me 3 times. I had called to cancel my subscription at $24.84 a month and was given the offer to subscribe online for $9.99+tax a mth which i accepted. The problems began. After 2+ weeks of trying to resolve this and after being told several times I had not been charged 2x even though I was looking at the 2 charges for the same month on my laptop screen, I was finally transferred to a supervisor. She refunded the $24.84 for Feb 2026 and said these double charges were my responsibility because they have 2 email addresses on file for me and I didn't qualify for further refunds. Even though The Star had the same credit card number for both email addresses. Make it make sense!! The Star are scammers and rip off artists imo. Do Not Subscribe! I am out $131.00 because I have 2 email addresses! read more

The long saga of trying to cancel a Toronto Star subscription. I took out a great priced home delivery subscription in February 2022. It expired at the end of February 2023. The bill for March 2023 was 40% higher than February. I called and asked it to be cancelled and was assured it was done. April bill arrives.... I CALLED AND ASKED AGAIN IT BE CANCELLED. May bill arrives.... I called and...... you get the idea. I called again towards the end of May and was advised that NO ONE HAD CANCELLED THE SUBSCRIPTION.... So I called Visa on June 5th, and filed a dispute on the transaction. Visa reversed the charges on two of the payments. The next day, June 6th, no paper was delivered. However, I did get an email with the subject: "We Want You Back!" offering a discount to re-subscribe. August 6 I received a bill for $32.50 from them. (Trying to recover the reversed charges?) I emailed them the info regarding the Visa and told them I'm not paying it because they kept delivering papers for 3+ months after I cancelled. They didn't reply. September 7 I receive another bill. This time for $65.00. I PHONED THEM. After much discussion - and them trying to get me to pay half of the bill - the person spoke with someone else and came back to the phone and told me I don't have to pay the bill. Let's see what arrives in the mail around October 6-7th.... It took several questions to eventually get the person on the phone to tell me they don't work IN a Toronto Star building. I could hear noises in the background suggesting she is working from home. (I heard kids and dogs in the background the previous times I called so this must be common practice.) The ethics behind this stink. Give a good deal and then technically refuse to cancel the subscription by claiming every time that "no one called previously to cancel this subscription". AVOID TORONTO STAR HOME DELIVERY UNLESS YOU WANT TO GO THROUGH THIS TRYING TO CANCEL IT. read more

Toronto star used my name in a traffic incident without my consent. My charges were dropped. Almost 14 years later the article still appears. I called them to remove the article based on no consent given and the charges being irrelevant. They refused. They only said they would adjust the article if I could prove the charges were dropped. Get off your high horse Toronto star. Im not digging up archives to please a corrupt organization that had no consent to include my name in the first place. read more

I find it particularly pathetic that such a large media corporation stoops to such " bait and switch" practices. I realize newspapers are failing and need subscribers. I am referring to your " sensational" head lines on most browsers home page and several other places. I click on it. It will let you read the headline and 2 or3 lines. Then you have to subscribe to read the rest of the story. They say you can cancel at anytime. Try! more wasted time. You have to open an account ... email...phone address. This was the 4-5 time it happened. This was the first time I had time to ask people if this kind of sleazy subscription scam you have time for? Once one of these jokers gets away with it.... they all do it.... waste half your life working around all the parasites on the net wasting peoples time tripping over their blood sucking marketing low life. I don't read or click on anything that says Toronto Star.... no big deal grows to .... Big F in Hassel Do better! I won't know if you'll change your "marketing" plan.... Toronto Star call the delivery DOOR STEP really should be sidewalk ( if your lucky). I have taken photos of where delivery lands even did a video & sent them to Tor star circulation, the always follow with an automatic reply & then another form reply. NOTHING IS EVER DONE, I even sent a video of where the liberal is deliveted( the hooks under our letter box) & where the Toronto star landed. even offered to send them the name & contact information of the liberal delivery company. Because they obviously have no control over their delivery service. Absolutely hopeless. read more

So, we tried to set up a new subscription. Pressed "Complete Order" after completing the online subscription page. A few seconds of the spinning wheel of doom, only to have the same subscription form pop up, but with a red-banner warning that the order could not be completed, as the email provided is already attached to a billing account. Um, nope, never had a Toronto Star account. So, attempted to submit, again, and got the exact same response (order not completed, email already attached to an account). Definition of insanity is trying the same thing over and over again, so, we did not give a third attempt. Two minutes later, we check our bank account, and TORSTAR has processed two payments for $31. Call Toronto Star to ask "What the heck?" And, you guessed it. They have no idea what we are talking about, or how to fix it. Now, we have to email them a screen shot of the subscription page, proving what happened. A screen shot of THEIR subscription page. This borders on fraud - charging people (twice) for a product you're not providing. Should have listened to the other reviews. What a scam. read more

Terrible customer service. You would think that since Meta dropped all Canadian News from being on its platform that customer service of all the Canadian media would be better. The Toronto Star is definitely going downhill. They used to provide good, solid and balanced reporting. Now they are turning towards more click bait type of headlines and articles and although this might bring in more readers, it is definitely tarnishing the Star's reputation. And they will lose long time supporters as well. It's more important than ever for media outlets to give honest and steady reporting but if the Star continues on its downward spiel it will get lost in the bottom of the heap trash that is only interested in the money and not the news. One of their most recent hires is a "writer", Althia Raj, who does opinion pieces but does not provide any context or anything else to support her view. It's like me saying that the Jays won the world series in 2015 - which we know is not true - but, hey, it's an opinion so I don't need to show you any proof right? The Star started allowing comments again a few years back, at least on select articles, but some of their moderators are really over-zealous and your comment can get deactivated for no explainable reason. For example, someone made a comment about Doug Ford being like a groundhog with his sparse appearances this summer during the rise of the 4th wave, another commented that he must have seen his shadow, and I added an lol to the second comment. My lol was deactivated. Seriously? Others have complained that their comments were deactivated when all they did was quote from another article in the Star. And others have noted that if you disagree with the premise of the opinion piece, your comment will likely soon disappear. And if you send in a complaint to the Star about these issues you receive an automated email in response. Apparently, they are not interested in giving any customer service. I will not be renewing my subscription once it's up. read more

Read the term and conditions before signing up for a digital subscription. I signed up for a promotion for $0.99/month for 6 months, but I guess in the fine print, it was a 12-month contract and full price after the 6 months. How is that not misleading?! You can't tell me that that was not done on purpose with the direct intention of roping someone into a 12-month contract. You also can't cancel without calling or sending an email, so that's a red flag as well. read more

We've subscribed to "The Star" for a couple years. If I had my way, I'd cancel and read what I want online instead but my husband is old school and likes to get the paper. Two complaints ... Do they have copy editors who proof it for typos, etc.? Every couple days I'll find some. Not professional at all. Also, on Monday they printed Tuesday's TV schedule instead of Monday's. Sigh ... Given that most don't even read the newspaper, one would think that T.O star would treat their loyal customers with some gratitude. My 88 yr old father had a pre paid yearly subscription to this paper for many years. Unfortunately he had to into Long Term Care. When the renewal came up we did not renew and we sent an email to the address on the invoice notification for renewal and stated no further renewals. They have now sent an invoice for 2 months service because they stated they received an email versus a phone call. So we are to pay his bill. Can you say CASH GRAB, the customer service here is disgusting , poor treatment to a long and loyal customer. SHAME ! read more

Absolutely the worst customer service for subscribers ever. I got a subscription for my mother. The paper wasn't delivered for more days than it was delivered. Whenever I'd call to complain, they promise delivery (which never happened.) The promises were meaningless. When I recently cancelled, they begged for "another chance", I told them that they had used up their last chance (I warned them in previous call.) In these days of declining subscribers, you would think the Toronto Star would want to hold on to its subscribers. Unfortunately, they seem to think subscribers will put up with terrible service. No, don't recommend to anyone unless you are willing to spend all your time calling because they don't deliver the product for which you paid. Avoid. read more

Three weeks ago today ( Mar 17 2018 ) the Star terminated it's great column "Ethically Speaking" which had been running for 13 years written by Ken Gallinger,. They did so with no notice to his readers or to Ken who was told only that they were cost cutting. I have been a 7 day subscriber to the Star for over 10 years and have always looked forward to the column and it's unique content. I feel at this point there is very little reason remaining to subscribe - unless you enjoy hopelessly left wing commentary. I am not affiliated with Ken or any newspaper - I simply enjoyed his viewpoints and advice. read more

I needed access to an article so I used one of their promotions and subscribed to be able to access it. When I tried to cancel my subscription a few days later they told me I had to pay a cancelation fee of $87 dollars, which is more than I will pay for the subscription in the first place by the end of the year. This company stole money from my account for 18 months and refused to refund it. The "customer support" not only refused to rectify the situation, the "manager" Brenda Andrews started to blame me in a condescending tone that I should have found their website and cancelled it. "You need to take accountability for your actions." Are you kidding me? This is the person you have managing customer success. No wonder this business has a terrible rating. They had no cancellation link on their emails, and were sending all emails from a noreply address so when I emailed to cancel it didn't go through. I didn't even know I paid for a subscription to this site, I started seeing on my credit card that I was being charged from something called "STAR METROLAND". This does not match the Toronto Star at all and does not show up on Google. I had no way to locate where the subscription charge was originating from. Eventually I found that it was from the Toronto star website which started another series of unfortunate events. I tried to cancel and get refunded. BUT they force customers to cancel over the phone. Only thing is, you will be on hold for 30 minutes trying to cancel a subscription that took you a click of a button to sign up for. They only do this to deter people from cancelling so they can continue to steal money. This is a predatory company that references predatory terms of service to justify their actions. Stay far away. And please fire this Brenda lady, she is not a people person and is driving your success rating into the ground. read more

I have a soft spot in my heart for the Star. Perhaps because I've been skimming/reading it since I was a kid. For best or worse this paper most closely represents how a Torontonian views themselves, their city and the world. I'm not saying that it's accurate all the time necessarily, just the closest that any paper comes. The sections never quite seem static and the weekend editions always have add and beefed up sections. This paper seems to want to wear two masks: that of a major paper for a major city as well an informative local guide. It's easy enough to avoid either side of that should you desire. I must also add that the best daily crosswords in the city are found here and the jumble is sweet too. read more

The Toronto Star is Canada's largest circulation national newspaper. I contacted their call center to subscribe last week. Not only do they not deliver in my area, but the call was answered in India!! TorStar is one of Canada's most prestigious corporations. The Star's got the highest circulation in the country, but is still a primarily city newspaper. I wish it had more "hard" news, and dropped such dopey sections as "Condos." I mean, the Sun doesn't have a "Tenements" section once a week, does it? Anyway, at least the Star is reasonably balanced editorially, unlike the Sun and the National Post. One of my pet peeves about the Star is how they have two "A" sections, the local and national section A, and the "world and comment" section AA. It's confusing (since some stories, like about American politics, end up in both sections on the same day), and a bit pointless (some days section AA is a mere four pages). read more

I was receiving the Toronto Star on a weekly basis. I went on Holiday on Oct13-Oct 20 so I called and stop the paper for that week, as well as asking for a better rate for the paper than I received in the invoice I also received that week. At NO TIME during the conversation (which was extensive) did the representative of the Star say that they no longer had a program where you could have your paper sent to a school while you were away. At the same time I said when they started it up again I would go to weekends only. I thought I had a full week left on the paid subscription (I paid 3 months at a time) so was rather surprised when I called to ask where the adjusted invoice and the paper was (which was the second time I had to request a second or adjusted invoice) the person I was speaking to said that I owed $13 for the Saturday and Sunday of October 26-27. I was shocked to say the least and requested to speak with a supervisor; after a brief pause the young lady came back and said that all supervisors where busy and I would get a call back. I did three days later at the end of the day when I was absent from home. So I called back today to be told that in August of 2013 a decision was made to cancel any credit for time away from home and stopped papers. When I asked how subscribers were informed of this I was told that a notice was put in the paper in August. I quite honestly did not see such a notice, I rarely read the ads so if it looked like an ad then I would not even have looked at it. When I asked why I was not told that when I called to stop the paper there was no answer. I feel I have been over charged in terms of the amount of time I have received the Star from the beginning of receiving the paper. Their customer service department is usually very unhelpful with the majority of staff not knowing how to read the computer forms and not knowing their product. I am very upset and have stopped the paper at this point. I am a disabled senior and figure I am not the only one they are doing this too. It is wrong and the practice needs to stop. read more

This is just in 2015 alone: When Palestinians murdered Rabbi Yaakov Don in a drive-by terrorism attack the headline was "Rabbi among three dead in West Bank shootings." In November, when Israeli forces went into a hospital to arrest a terrorist who stabbed an Israeli civilian whose only crime was existing the headline yelled, "Israeli forces raid West Bank hospital" and spoke about how the Hamas member who was killed trying to fight these forces in the raid was beloved by family. In October, when 2 Palestinian terrorists went on a rampage attack stabbing civilians, trying to murder them, and were killed in the midst of carrying out their savage mission, the headline read, "Palestinians shot dead by Israeli police in two separate knife attacks." In August, the Star reprinted a GlobalPost article on how Israeli forces regularly shoot at Gaza fishermen. The article, oops, forgets to mention that there's a naval blockade in the area to prevent Hamas from smuggling weapons into Gaza, which they are known to do! In July, the Star's YouTube page gave coverage to a comedian who joked about how PM Harper is an accomplice to Israel's "killing (of Palestinian) children and unarmed people." They also wrote an article in July about how Israel's Gaza blockade makes it hard to ship in medical supplies to Palestinians, even hough the REAL reason is that Gazans have a history of NOT PAYING FOR THEM! Nothing to do with the blockade! And remember PM Netanyahu's anti Iran-deal speech to congress? The Star made sure to say ""Netanyahu notably declined to outline an alternative way to thwart Iran's nuclear ambitions," a lie taken straight out of the Obama camp. In fact, watch the speech! Bibi eloquently said that the alternative to the present 'bad deal' is not no deal, still less war, but 'a much better deal,' using the threat of sanctions. That's an alternative! This bias has been going on for years and all it does is incite people to believe that Israel, and Jews via association, are bloodthirsty killers when really the people they paint as victims look to murder innocent people and die as martyrs every day. It is shameful, antisemitic, and makes for a terrible customer experience as a former reader. I call upon anyone who is into truth in journalism not to subscribe to this trash. read more

This is astonishing. Any negative review that suggests the Toronto Star fails to meet acceptable journalistic standards of competence and objectivity is exiled to the 'Not Currently Recommended' reviews section and plays no role in the paper's overall rating, which is consequently worthless. I've been reading the Star since 1959, and while it always skewed left it wasn't captured by ideologues until relatively recently. Ideology now suffuses every part of the paper, with the same political messages being slammed home relentlessly and tediously. The book review section, for example, has abandoned any pretense of an interest in literature, opting instead for a steady diet of books or authors (preferably female, black, aboriginal, gay, or an immigrant) that affirm or can be subordinated to the task of buttressing leftist narratives. Letters to the editor are clearly selected with a view to promoting such narratives, not as a representative cross-section of public opinion. Whether or not one is in sympathy with this single-minded institutional focus isn't the point: it's a legitimate project for a think tank or an advocacy group, but not for journalists. Journalism's task is to keep us informed about the political/ideological/culture wars, not to strive to win them for one side. I've always voted NDP, which in theory is to the left even of the Liberals, but I'm no more anxious to consume propaganda that claims to speaks for my views than against them. I'm also a retired reference librarian, with ongoing concern for the reliability of information sources; and to the extent that the Star has chosen to masquerade political pamphleteering as journalism I can no longer endorse it as a trustworthy source. At the same time the Star's editorial quality, never brilliant, has degenerated toward the truly abysmal (some of what passes for reasoned argument in the paper's 'exploration' of issues isn't even coherent, never mind informative); but that's another story. read more

Terrible... With the recent pandemic, this news conglomerate puts profits before informing the public about health/safety issues. "Want to learn more about this virus that's killing everyone? Subscribe to our crappy news outlet" It used to be my favorite printed, local news source. It's funny that despite the pages and pages of ad space they sell, they still feel the need to pinch every penny. Even after acquiring the primary news source for my city outside of Toronto, they still want to extort the public out of money, during one of the hardest times in recent history.
