I ordered an item and the quality was completely unacceptable. To get my $60 back I need to pay $25-50 in shipping. These items are cheap and poorly made. Don't be fooled by the photos online. I once bought a pair of pants from their store for about $40-50 and they lasted less than 6 months before wearing out and ripping. Their shirts also don't survive washing very well. The shoddy clothing quality combined with the relatively high prices are enough reason not to shop here. There are MANY clothing stores that sell quality clothing in the same sizes for roughly the same prices. Laura Plus immediately springs to mind. Seriously, always check their sale racks... Thankfully, they don't appear to have stores anymore. But when they did, you also had to deal with some of the rudest, most unprofessional customer service people you could ever meet. Seriously. The manager at the Square One location from a few years ago was terrible. I once watched her refuse to interview an applicant because she was angry that they didn't show up 30 minutes early for an interview. RIGHT IN THE STORE AND IN FRONT OF EVERYONE. That does not create a good environment for the customer. Well, that was it for me. I walked out of that store and have never been back or purchased anything from them since. As I said, guys. There are just too many options out there for plus sized women for anyone to be patronizing this store. Look elsewhere if you care about good, long-lasting clothing and good customer service/professionalism.

I used to shop at Penningtons when I lived in Winnipeg and was larger in size. This chain caters to…read moreplus-sized women. At the time, clothes that I wanted to get at GAP had a maximum size of 16. I sadly couldn't fit in it. For more stylish pieces that fit me, I came to Penningtons and Addition-Elle. Although I am proud that I can shop for clothes anywhere these days, what caught my attention recently was Meredith Shaw's new fashion line at Penningtons. I have been a fan of hers when she was a radio host on CHUM 104.5 before joining Breakfast Television. I loved the pieces from her collection that she modelled. The colours were vibrant and flattering on her. We are roughly the same height, so it helped me gauge how it would look on someone a couple of inches shy of being six feet tall. I am less busty and less curvy (I look like a ladder when you look straight at me) than she is, so it also helped picture how a particular purple summer dress that I wanted would look on me. Penningtons offers Addition-Elle pieces. There aren't any physical Addition-Elle store in Canada anymore, but I'm glad that the brand endures at Penn. The difference between the two brands is sizing. Penningtons sizes make sense to me, the average consumer. Addition-Elle sizes run smaller. As an example, if you are a Penningtons size 1X, you are a size 2X on the Addition-Elle scale. I'm on the smaller scale at this store. So, I got the 1X in the dress that I wanted. It was a sleeveless tiered swing dress, where the swing part of the skirt starts above your waist. The best part was that I took advantage of this fashion line being 40% off. I ordered online and decided to pick up my order at this store in Vaughan. Exchanges are free if I got the wrong size. I headed over here after work. It's in a plaza that has a Winners and a California Sandwiches that I used to frequent years ago. I had no problem finding the store and parked in front of it. There was plenty of parking at around 5:30 pm on a Wednesday night. I walked into the store. It was spacious and inviting. I saw Meredith's line of dresses, but the dress that I had ordered was not there. I stood at the checkout counter. It took maybe three minutes for someone to acknowledge me. It's the only reason why this review is just shy of a five-star one. When a female staffer finally said hi, all was great. I indicated that I had an order. She asked for my name and phone number. She then went into the back to retrieve my order. Another female staffer came over and asked if I was being helped. I was. When it rains, it pours! The first woman returned with my bag. She asked for ID. I provided my driver's licence. All was great. She handed me my bag. She complimented me on my nails. I said that they were gel nail strips that you could get at Winners in the same plaza. She asked to look at my nails more carefully. She liked them a lot. I thanked her and left. There is a clearance section in the back left corner of the store. I wouldn't get anything at regular price at Penningtons because it can be expensive. I tried the dress on when I got home. It fit perfectly. It's flattering. I normally don't like to wear dresses because they don't always look good on me, but I was so pleased with the comfy fit and how wonderful it looked on me. The description of this dress online failed to indicate that you get pockets. I love pockets and was relieved that I got them. Pockets rule! It was nice to buy an Addition-Elle dress at Penningtons. I don't know how often I'll be back here again, but I did like a pair of Bobs sneakers in lilac. I'll need to wait for them to go on sale before I return for more. (221)

Thus, I decided I'd make a heroic sacrifice for my fellow yelpers and go in and check it out. The owner Victoria was lovely and happy to chat with me and her store itself is well laid out with a pleasant atmosphere. There was a wide range of attractive clothing for sizes 14+ as well as jewelry and other accessories. I should note here that she's not currently stocking shoes but has pretty much everything else you need to kit yourself out. Also, while I was there I saw at least one happy customer make a number of fine purchases. Hopefully someone who has actually bought something here will come along and give their more experienced review however I was pretty impressed with Gussied Up - if you are a fuller figured lady I recommend coming in and checking it out!

So friendly and helpful, always ready with a smile and a suggestion, without being pushy. I cannot say enough about the clothing. I have yet to leave the store empty handed. I have purchased dresses, tops, a super cute bathing suit, and accessories. And I am always complimented on my outfit when it comes from Gussied Up. I am so happy now that their second location in Vaughan is open, it's much more convenient for me (but that could be dangerous for my bank account) The only negative about the Bathurst location, is that its a little tricky finding parking, but if you persevere, its worth it.

There were more adorable earrings, purses, and clothes than I could fathom. My friend and I wandered the store for nearly an hour alternately exclaiming, "cute!" with mouth agape or chatting up the staff. As Erin H mentions, each showcased artist/designer works onsite once a week. The only downside to this is if inquiring minds have questions about something other than the artist du jour personally made, there won't be any answers. And as a person with some hard core metal allergies, I won't buy jewelry unless I am certain that it doesn't contain anything that will make my earlobes swell. However, I was lucky to encounter the artist who crafted the earrings that fell in love with and so, got to take them home with me (and support the local arts). Plus, I was able to be a helper that day (I love being of assistance). As the resident artist handed me a credit card receipt, I was able to pass along this little tip: legal colors only please! I passed on the pink pen handed to me and instead signed with a my own, handy blue plume. For, although I wasn't planning on contesting the charges, anyone could attempt to do so and without either a customer's blue or black ink signature on file, the store might end up "out" some fundage.

Yes, they are pricey (but in my humble American experience there is quite a mark up on *all* clothes in Canada vs the States - like a cheap tank top at H&M will be $5 more automatically in Canada - the exchange rate right now more than makes up for it) but a lot of the items aren't much - if any - cheaper online. I also just love supporting places like this, since there are so few left, and since a lot of "goth" brands run small I prefer to try a lot of the stuff on in person. The girl working and I had a good chat about the history/future of Lip Service in particular and some other stuff. She was super helpful and friendly which was also a change from a lot of alt shops, where the employees seem to spend their time perfecting that "I'm way too fucking cool to talk to you" vibe that makes me eye roll. I wanted *all* the things but settled on two LS dresses, one of which was shiny PVC and fulfilled all of 15 year old me's dreams. Definitely a spot to check out for a pricier but quality "statement piece" or to comb the shoe and clothing sales racks. I'd also like to add they had a surprising amount of men's clothes and not just band t-shirts and jeans either.
