It was Sunday, 19 January, at 3pm. The large parking lot was full and people were still getting started, cycling or hiking with small children and/or dogs. There was quite a bit of dog poop in the parking lot. I bagged my dog's poop and a few other dogs' poop before starting. None of the trails are difficult or long. I used six trails to create an 8- mile loop that took us three hours. I was interested in the Black rock loop. The namesake rock should be called called Butt crack rock. This park is free to use from dawn to dusk and is dog friendly. There are two porta pots but no water station. And no matter how far away from the trailhead you go, you will always see homes in the area. A sign in the parking lot warns users to lock vehicles and to secure valuables

Starting from the parking lot at Sabino Canyon we had plenty of sun until the Phoneline Trail split off into Blackett's Ridge. We then had some shade until we got further up the mountain. The trail is rocky with a lot of switchbacks. I would definitely recommend good hiking shoes! The trail is pretty hard since it is so steep, but it is rewarding. Getting to the top is an accomplishment the views are beautiful! If you are afraid of heights stop at the "end of trail sign" but if you are feeling good, taking a few more steps will give you an even greater appreciation of the "ridge" in Blackett's Ridge. Just be sure to take caution! I would definitely recommend this hike and I would 100% do it again!

The initial stage is fairly level and shouldn't tire you out; however, once you've passed that part, it's a steady set of inclined switchbacks for what seems like a good while. Upon getting to the top, you begin to realize why it was worth the ascent--a fantastic view of the Tucson valley and the surrounding mountains! Be sure to bring plenty of water (esp in summertime) to stay hydrated as there are no fountains to my knowledge beyond the parking lot/visitor center. Also, being that this is inside Sabino, be aware the charge to enter is $5, and on busy weekends there's no guarantee you will quickly find a parking spot (you sometimes have to drive around until you either see a car pulling out or see people walking toward the lot. The Hidden Canyon Trail is a hidden gem tucked away behind the Starr Pass Resort. It provides great views of both the canyon and the surrounding area once you reach the high point. The trail drops down on the other side of the canyon and connects to the Bowen House trail. The Bowen stone house is a must-see.

The distance in and back is not too bad (around 2.6 miles) and the level is pretty easy so my young kids and our family had no trouble with it. The scenery is breathtaking as wild flowers are in bloom and you're surrounded by towering saguaros and mountains. It is so picturesque. The trail leads to the Bowen Stone House / Bowen Homestead which is a cool landmark to learn about and to visit. There is a small amount of parking before the trail. If you're looking for a nice and easy trail to get outside with, you can't go wrong with this one.

At that 0.75 mile point the trail is starting to get more poorly marked as well as we assume a lot of folks turn around near there and don't go all the way up. It's a decent spot to stop at, there is a small area with flat boulders you can sit on and catch a good view of the canyon to the south. There is no water, restrooms or rest area so come ready to hike and leave plenty of water in your car for your return.

Long story short - there really isn't anything much here to challenge anyone who is any kind of intermediate or advanced hiker. It's also probably safe to say that calling it a Trail is overly generous; throughout most of the ground we covered what was allegedly a trail was just a rocky, narrow pseudo-path. Tip: If you happen to come here on one of Tucson's infrequent rainy days, the rocks can become quite slippery and maybe even a little dangerous. Bottom line: If you're a beginning hiker then this "trail" is quite doable and safe, as long as it's not raining. If you're an intermediate to advanced hiker and you want to get some sweat on, you should probably seek your challenges elsewhere.

This family-friendly park, in the Sonoran Desert, features petroglyphs, a historic rock dam, three miles of hiking trails, rentable ramadas (covered open shelters with picnic tables), and a few benches and grills. It is open dawn to dusk. Being mostly flat, most of the trails are rated as "easy", but there are a few limited areas where the slope is a bit steep and you need to ascend/descend on slippery sand or gravel/small stone. Entrance to the park and parking are free. The parking lot has about 20 spaces, and was half-full during our visit on a Saturday morning. The Oro Valley, AZ webpage has two maps, one of the park and the other of trails. Per our AllTrails app, we walked a total of about 1.6 miles on a route that included the rock dam, but turned back as it was starting to get hot, we were having trouble staying on trail because of lack of signage, and there was limited shade in the desert. This is a very nice park, that would've merited a 5-star rating had there been better signage. There is NO informational sign near the parking lot (or anywhere else in the park for that matter) with a map of the trails and amenities in the park. We parked in the lot on the side near the exit, and started our walk through an arch on a path that descended down to the flat area, but it seemed somewhat washed out and sand-slippery. Upon returning later, we found that there were two PAVED paths up to the parking area but on the entrance side that we hadn't seen earlier. In fact, one of these paths was accessible. Also, while hiking, we found that there were a lot of potential paths that we could follow. My husband, who is an avid hiker, kept going in directions other than where my AllTrails app said that we should go to stay on the loop trail we intended to take. There were some signs there, but they were missing at critical junction points. We also overheard another group of six turn around because they weren't sure how to continue the loop. This is also a comment made by many on AllTrails.
