I picked up food to go, but just wanted to say it felt like I went to my close uncles house to be fed. Toshi, the owner works by himself and came across so genuine. Simply for his soul alone I deove home excited to try his sushi for the first time, and man was it super delish!!! I especially appreciate the variety of eel options, something some other sushi places don't have. Everything was bomb, but my top two favorites were the baked garlic shrimp roll and the dragon roll. The crispie rice with spicy tuna was good, but ive had better and I believe he torched/baked the tuna instead of it being raw. Overall, Id get sushi from here again and if theres an off chance no one is there, my husband and I would def love to chitchat with while receiving our orders and eating in-front of him bar style. Restaurant had no ambiance, looked like a swamp meet. We ordered $60 worth of sushi and it all went to the trash, the albacore didn't taste right; IT WAS WARM. The salmon had a terrible fish-y taste to it, the rolls had no structure and would fall apart when you picked it up. Food overall was trash, I would not recommend anyone to come here. I don't know where all these five star reviews came from but this restaurant is HORRIBLE and doesn't even deserve one star. It deserves ZERO stars. My favorite little hole in the wall sushi spot!! Toshi-san prepares all his food himself and truly makes you feel like a valued customer. The restaurant has its own unique charm (that some may not understand if you are accustomed to the big, fancy corporate sushi chains). This place is more simple and bare bones in the best way: bring in your own drinks, and sit down for some great sushi. Nine times out of ten, Toshi-san will have the japanese TV going in the background, as he hums while working---it's a chill vibe! My go-to's? The spider roll, California roll, caterpillar roll, dragon roll. But if you prefer more authentic/traditional Japanese sushi, of course he's got that too! read more

Such an amazing hole in the wall restaurant! It reminded us very much of our time in Japan. A small little place owned by Toshi who also runs the place by himself. He was so friendly and because it was just my boyfriend and me in there, we ended up talking with Toshi for well over an hour. So if you want speedy service on a slow night, don't count on it but he makes up for it in amazing sushi and great conversation. The fish he used was so fresh along with all the veggies that were crisp. We got 4 different rolls: spicy tuna, yellowtail, Toshi roll, and the Eel and Avocado and literally all of them were a hit. The miso soup was some of the best I've ever had and he even surprised us with his own little creation with the leftover spicy tuna so he didn't have to waste it. I will definitely be returning and bringing friends, I could not recommend this place more. Unless you want water or hot tea, you'll need to go next door for some drinks but we will always be down with BYOB lol. Lastly, for everything we got, the total was very doable and reasonable. I've both dined in and ordered take out from Toshi a variety of times over the last decade and it has been nothing but exceptional every time. Toshi himself (or so I assume his name is) is such a sweet man who really puts time and love into preparing your food, and he sings in a beautiful voice while doing it! Though I've tried a variety of things here from spicy tuna crispy rice to unagi to dragon rolls, hands down this is the BEST spot for a Philly roll. The portions are generous, it's always fresh tasting, and it's just top notch. It makes me not want to order Philly rolls from anywhere else now. Small place with interesting, eclectic wall decorations. The house salad is big and comes with fried onion strings, yum! I picked out every last one. The service is great and prices are fair. I really liked Toshi's Wrap roll. There's no rice, instead extra imitation crab meat and cucumber slices in place of the seaweed. Plus TWO tempura shrimp pieces per roll! This is your neighborhood sushi spot. Don't expect high end sushi but this place has all the staples - everything from nigiri, sashimi, hand rolls, to specialty rolls doused in teriyaki sauce or spicy mayo if that's your thing. This place is really close to our house so my husband and I have stopped by twice on a week night just to get our quick sushi fix. The latest time we came was a Tuesday so the restaurant was fairly empty. The chef came by to talk to us since we were the only ones there towards the end of the night. He's really friendly and is actually from Japan. We recently visited Japan in April so we had a nice conversation with him about that. The quality of the sushi isn't too bad but they could work on their service. Their food is very slow to come out and the young waitress working that night clearly seemed confused / flustered. What a small world. I had gone quite often to Toshi's restaurant in Silverlake on Hyperion right next to the Say Cheese store. In fact, I first met Toshi when he was working as Sushi chef at the long gone Zen restaurant also on Hyperion in the early 1990's. I missed going to Toshi's when he was on Ventura Blvd, but have accidently but pleasantly met up with him in his North Hollywood/Valley Glen "hidden gem" on Van Owen. This is a down home, informal, kick back place. There is no classic Kappo-/haute cuisine formality nor ritual. You can scarf down on rainbow, caterpillar, dragon rolls, but Toshi can change gears to a more authentic Edomaè (eh doh mah eh)/traditional Tokyo style Sushi at the drop of a hat. I tend to be a Sushi purist so I asked Toshi to facilitate mostly Nigiri (nee ghee ree)/hand shaped Sushi rice w/ seafood on top or a Temaki/classic handroll without mayonnaise, sweet "eel sauce", or non-traditional sriracha garlic chile sauce on every order. Toshi pulled out good quality: 1) Engawa/halibut fin muscle that was pleasantly chewy w/ a bit of fattiness. Green onion, Shiso/Japanese Basil. 2) Hiramè/halibut whIch had a bit of sweet sea Umami w/ touch of Yuzu Kosho-/puréed Japanese citrus zest & green chile. Green onion & julienned cucumber. 3) Hotatè (hoh tah teh)/scallop Temaki/handroll was off white creamy, soft, velvety, plush w/ ocean kissed sweetness. Masago orange fish roe was a nice colour contrast as well as upping the sweet Umami. 4) Ika/squid: flat sheet of pearly white scored to cut fibres in order to soften the meat w/ underlying emerald green Shiso. Toshi also thoughtfully added small steamed whole baby octopus to include octopod as well was decapod offerings. 5) Chu-Toro: medium fatty Hon Maguro/bluefin tuna was meaty, soft, fatty, bit beefy. Wasabi & Sho-yu/soy sauce to accentuate the meaty, beefiness. Green Kaiwarè Daikon sprouts on the side added a peppery vegetal tone as well as a contrasting green & white to the pink rose colored dawn of the Chu-Toro. 6) Shiro Maguro/albacore: soft, sensuously soft,.pillowy, lightly sweet meat. Bit of funky green onion & crispy fried sweet onion. 7) Lastly, dessert: Temaki of sweet Unagi/fresh water eel baked w/ a hint of sweet Sho-yu eel sauce. Slice of oily Aguacate/avocado, green onion, Kaiwarè Daikon. 1-7a) Brought my own premium Sakè (sah keh), Katsuyama Akatsuki Junmai Daiginjo from Sendai City Miyagi Prefecture. Scents & tastes of fully ripened summer Japanese pears, bit of honey dew, touch peppery, mildly acidic, smooth, silky, coolness. Nice refined, elegant pairing to the overall meal. You can bring your own bottle of Sakè , wine, beer, and also bring your own crystal for Sakè or wine since Toshi doesn't have a big selection of appropriate glasses in order to appreciate them. Toshi pulled out some magical Sushi tricks to allow me to experience a more pure Japanese Edomaè style which is probably not the typical way his usual customers order. Really enjoyed his skill at creating Washoku/classic Japanese cuisine at a moment's notice without any prior warning. 4 Yelp stars for going out of his way to cater to a Sushi purist. read more

This is by far some of the best sushi I've had in a long time. I ordered it for delivery once, but I recommend eating in the restaurant (keep in mind it's small but it's a hole-in-wall gem). The chef, Toshi, is amazing and his dishes are perfectly put together. I highly recommend calling Toshi in advance and reserving his one indoor table for omakase (chef's choice). I have done this twice now and the items he puts together are things I wouldn't think to order, but they are phenomenal. Toshi makes great food and he is very kind. This establishment is digusting the owner making the sushi is nasty! They served me rotten scallops that reeked with a horrible stench! I threw away the entire $100 order because I got disgusted! The guys working the joint are nice, I know it's not super authentic but who cares? It was all pretty tasty. I had a hand roll that was standard but good. The super ninja roll is awesome and it's everything I like. Albacore is one of my faves. Came here on my lunch break for a quick sushi fix. The sushi chef is hispanic. I had the salmon nigiri and yellowtail nigiri (2 pcs each) which was about $5 each. The slices of salmon and yellowtail where very long and thick on top of very little rice. It took two bites to finish a piece; that's how big it was. (Also, I had to fish out two bones in my salmon nigiri, that's a first) I also had the Funky Night Roll, $12, which was a spicy tuna roll with jalepeno, cream cheese and chopped up yellowtail on top with raw onions and a generous amount of ponzu sauce. The first time I had this it had good flavor, but the second time it just fell apart and there was too much cream cheese and ponzu. A definite hole-in-the-wall sushi joint. It's not the freshest selection of fish, but I didn't get food poisoning or have a stomach ache either. CASH ONLY and parking in a private lot shared with 7-eleven. Highlights were the spicy tuna on crispy rice appetizer, the yellowtail collar special (worth driving there for), and the VERY FRESH yellowtail and albacore sushi. Also had the Ninja Roll, which was creative and interesting - although I prefer the purist items over the crazy ones ... The service was BEYOND. ANYTHING. EXPECTED. Decor was minimal, as in nonexistent. But who cares? The food and service will keep you distracted from even noticing. Turns out, Toshi is the proprietor and chef of another local sushi place that has been around for decades. Glad he brought this casual new place to us and let his two very capable soldiers run it.
