Came here to find a bed base as already had a new mattress at home. It was rather busy and only one…read moremanager on with no staff around to ask. Said manager was also interviewing at this time which seemed inappropriate as surely customer service is more important? We enquired if any of the showroom bed bases could be sold without a mattress because they were not a set just paired up by staff in the store for the showroom and the manager confirmed they could not. She also explained that they always include mattresses with the showroom bed bases because nobody wants them and they need to get rid of them. She told me I could always pay for the mattress and then re-donate it (is this even legal?). She would not even explain the cost of bed and mattress separately before I told her how much I was willing to spend. She then told us that we could look in the store room with another member of staff, a much more professional young man who was more than happy to help. We found a suitable bed base for £60 which seemed like a good deal. It had a tag on it in the storeroom as this was the estimated price of the bed base alone. When we got to the till however said manager told the young man that was just the store room price and that it would have to be sold with a mattress from the back. She calculated this to be £90 including delivery. Of course this is a good price for the bed base in and of itself, I would not have any problem paying this amount for that base as it was solid wood and in good condition, but the fact that she let us look in the store room in the first place and pick out a bed was an illusion if she was going to slap extra money on us at the till. On principle I am not going to pay SHOWROOM PRICES for a STOREROOM base that does not come with a mattress ---- again, this was not part of a set. It was a case of the manager wanting me to remove her rubbish and pay for the price of it. And may I just point out that I HAD NOT EVEN SEEN THIS MATTRESS. I think it is unreasonable to expect someone to pay for a mattress which was completely random and not part of the bed nor part of a set. I think it is insane to ask someone to pay for an item they have never even seen. And I think it is ludicrous to expect someone to pay showroom prices for a storeroom base when presumably it costs more for a showroom bed because someone has had to take the time and effort to put it together and display it. And again, the bed was worth £90 but why not be up front about it in the first place? Why was the bed labelled £60? Why was the bed base labelled as £60 to begin with if it wasn't intended to be sold separately or if this wasn't a possibility? Why would the item be priced up in the storeroom if the price was subject to change once the random mattress is added at the managers discretion? It is completely bizarre and if anything just proves that the bed base was intended for sale separately, and all this was about is the managers motivation to get rid of trash nobody wants and make money from it. If staff in this particular store are paid any kind of a wage I think this needs investigating as it seems very shady to me. Once again the young man who helped us in the storeroom was respectable, helpful and enthusiastic and I feel it is such a shame he is working under the supervision of such a moronic, sour-faced individual as he clearly has a lot of potential. This really is about the principle. I am not a cheap person and I am not an unpleasant person. I am a very fair person and I believe that customers should be treated with respect and their consumer rights should be honoured. I don't believe that is the case with this store. Unprofessional and unfriendly manager, terrible organisation, unreasonable and illogical expectations of customer to pay for unseen item as a way of getting rid of extra rubbish from storeroom.. Needless to say, we left without spending a penny. And BHF lost out on a good deal of money with only themselves to blame for their silly policies.
