Total wine? More like total waste of time. Like the other reviews - idiotic policy on ID check and borderline discriminatory practices. My husband and I are 40 years old, we are members and must've purchased hundreds of bottles from here over the course of many years. My husband and I are both professionals - today, we were dressed down and decided to pop in. At checkout, this rude lady declined our purchase because my husband didn't have his ID (he did have a picture) - she literally exclaimed .. "go home, get it, come back". Are you carding all the toddlers in the store? Never have we been berated with such bile and spoken to with such condescension. I am non-white and based on other reviews, this now looks to be a trend. We are never returning to any Total Wine - we can and will pay more to be treated with equal kindness and respect. The worst part about writing this review is the fact that I am not the first customer nor will I be the last that gets discriminated at this location. From the moment my family and I walked in, to the moment we checked out there was no sense of respect or morality. It's LITERALLY disgusting being treated like this. I get having to check IDs but don't pick and choose who you ID and who you don't. If you have a store policy, enforce it with everyone, not just people who don't fit the neighborhoods description, lol. She only switched up her attitude when I mentioned her staff was discriminating us from the moment we walked in. Probably wanted to avoid a lawsuit but after seeing discrimination really is TRENDING at this store and nothing has been done, maybe having a lawyer investigate this is a good idea, especially after today. read more

I shop here occasionally because it's convenient. The service here is either ok or just awful, and their selection of wine & spirits is decent. I came here recently, and asked for some assistance as I was looking for a particular Heidi Barrett wine. the person who was "helping" me gave me the snarkiest response, "oh, well that stuff is expensive. You should probably look at this one instead". In my head I was thinking, "I'm well aware of the price. Do you have the bottle I want or not? & don't try to sell me some BS chazerai wine". Who hires these people? & who the heck makes a comment on price? Total Wine is conveniently located in Tustin Market Place with plenty of parking. Walking into the store, I was impressed at how well organized the wines and spirits were in very clean aisles. The staff at Total Wine was very helpful and friendly. I was looking for a Japanese Plum Wine. They showed me where the liqueur was located and provided good insight and recommendations regarding a couple different brands. Had a terrible experience today around 8/9pm. My friends and I had come to this total wine and more to get some drinks for a party and as we headed to checkout, I noticed the cashier seemed to be in a low/negative mood. I understood that maybe she was that way since it was getting late towards the night and that she must've been tired so I didn't think much of it. After checking our IDs and ringing us up, one of my friends asked her how her night was. She responded begrudgingly with, "Well I'm here and working so not great. Anytime I'm not working is better." Like I said before, she must've been having a bad night so I understand the negativity. What I did not understand, and was also absolutely not okay with, was her responding back with, "how's your night going? Are you working?" To which my friend responded with "no" in confusion. She then followed it up with "lucky you" in the most condescending and sarcastic way, as if she wanted us to feel bad for even asking the question. We all were so uncomfortable with her reaction that we paid and left quickly in silence. Because of this, we did not get her name but she was a young girl with ginger/strawberry blonde hair. This review is dedicated to Carla. I bought 2 bottles of $80/per bottle whiskey. I got to the register and asked if I could please get change $20 (two $10 bills or whatever else). She told me "no" and how "this is not a bank." I said "ok" i'll buy one bottle with cash and the other with credit. She went on to tell me that they only have a finite amount of cash and that what i asked for is "not possible, this is not a bank." I told her that of course it is possible and to please just complete this transaction so I can get out of here. She persisted to argue with me and rolled her eyes until a manager looking person came and asked about her break. She then proceeded to apologize to the other customers bc I was holding up the line. Finally she did it but b4 I left I asked her for her name. She completed the transaction and slipped in, "Next time make sure to go to the bank before you come here." That did it. Unbelievable. I am writing this collected review in response to my immediate experience today. As such, my two friends and I went in with the intention to buy beer and agave for future mixed drinks. For context, we are well over the legal age. One of friends forgot their identification so we opted to just purchase only the agave. When we got to the register, the attendant claimed that all three of us needed to provide a form of ID to purchase just the agave. I notified her that, two of the three of us had our proof of age and reminded her that the agave nectar contained no alcoholic content. Still in denial, she brought her manager who refused to go through with the purchase and proceeded to tell us that it was in their 'policy'. Now, I'm not too well versed in these policies, but I can't make any sense of this. Some customers walk in with their children, but do they ask the children to provide an ID?! Despite leaving the store in a professional manner, this experience left a sour taste in my mouth which in turn, prompted me to write this review. Please direct me if I am wrong. At this very moment I just can't understand this process of procedures. From this, I can only look back and think to myself what poorly informed management. The amount of confidence that was displayed to my friends and I was certainly off-putting, especially if there was no right to make such a claim. Last Thursday, we went to Total Wine in Tustin and took a couple of wines to take home after having the nice experience to taste test a few of them first. Dwight took care of us and gave us 8 cabernet's to try. They were amazing and all very delicious. He was exceptionally knowledgeable on his cabs and he knew exactly which winery each cab was from and the background/history of the winery's of the cabs. I've only gone to wine and beer classes at the Laguna Hills location and always had a great experience so I thought I would try out Tustin since it's closer to me. Attended the European Wine class and found it to be a little boring. I found the experience between the two locations completely opposite, so depending on what experience you're going for I would suggest reading the below to pick the best location for you. Tustin: -classroom style seating where everyone faces forward, not much interaction with others -presenter goes super in depth on each slide leading to delays in between tastings -lots and lots of wine facts that are sometimes hard to understand -cheese and/or meat is passed out per wine and you can only grab bread at the beginning -the end was very rushed trying to get in the last samples since the presentation took so long -small pours and 8 tastings only -A/C was broken so it was warm inside Laguna Hills: -everyone sits as part of a big table facing each other so it feels more interactive -doesn't feel like a class, more like a social wine tasting event, relaxed vibe -huge charcuterie plate to grab as much as you want -larger pours and they usually have bonus tastings which amount to 10 tastings -at the end if you want more wine they let you have extra pours -chocolate also provided -10% discount off any of the wines sampled Overall if you want a purely educational experience I would come to the Tustin location, but if you're looking for more of a social event I would go to Laguna Hills. I came here because the selection is great and because I couldn't find this awesome beer "Carlsberg" a Danish Pilsner that i had up in Solvang a few weeks earlier and they had it right here and for a good price. Total Wine & More is my favorite liquor store. Their vast selections of beer, whiskeys, and even sodas make me feel like a kid in candy store. I often find rare and/or unique beverages that I wouldn't often see at other liquor stores. I usually pick up a mix of beer, hard liquor, and soda to replenish my "fun" beverages at home. Their staff is knowledgable and friendly. They occasionally offer wine tastings (I'm sure that's been put on hold due to COVID), but they require a donation in order to do so, but any amount will suffice. I visited this Total Wine store recently to look for a gift to a friend. As I was leaving the store with the gift in hand, a male employee in a Total Wine sweater vest followed me all the way to my car! I got in my car quickly and locked my doors - who knew why he followed me out since I didn't interact with him at all while I was in the store?? He threateningly took pictures of me and my license plate in the parking lot, and I left that area quickly, extremely shaken. I'm a 5'1 petite Asian woman who was by herself so I was extremely intimidated since this male employee could easily overpower me. There's been reports of Asian hate crimes in the area too. I can't think of a single good reason why a male Total Wine employee would follow a female customer out to her car and take pictures of her with no prior interaction. I actually contacted Total Wine to tell them about this incident, and to request that the photos of me be deleted from their employee's phone. It's been over 10 days and I haven't received a response from them yet. I even gave them a follow up call a few days ago but I guess they just don't care. There is an employee named Cheryl. I called in to get the proper spelling of her name, so hopefully I got it right, but she is angel from heaven. Bless her heart and soul; I have never felt like such a VIP client until I met the beautiful effervescent Cheryl. I took the hardest engineering test of my life (the California Seismic Exam early this morning) and I was really sad. I went here to lift my spirits and prepare for the New Years. Cheryl saw me in the champagne section and was open to give me advice on what wine to pick. She actually offered to give me a taste test of the champagnes! She listened to me attentively on what type of flavors I like, and I'm telling you I was dressed like a vagabond because I had just finished taking my state engineering exam; she trusted my words and treated me like a human being regardless of my attire. It's really important to me to be treated for my experience based on wines (she delicately explained to me albeit I requested a champagne similar to a sauvignon blanc, that most champagnes are a blend of chardonnay, and Pinot Noir and Meunier. Needless to say, she was the sweetest person I had ever met and on a day where there was such a lot of high stress, her kindness and attention to explaining to details of champagne truly mattered to me. She made me feel like a customer and provided the best customer service, I have honestly ever experienced. She was sweet and kind and helped me understand the complexities that go into champagne and sparkling wines. I truly appreciated her taking the time to explain the difference between the different types of sparkling wines. She introduced me to the best champagnes for my palate which was perfect for my New Years. Needless to say, I'm just truly so grateful and happy to have met Cheryl during my time at this store because I'm so used to being treated like I'm invisible when trying to buy a nice wine. Cheryl could have sold me a $300 bottle of wine, and I would have bought it because she was just so knowlegeable and delightful, but she sold me a beautiful reasonably price champagne grand cru. Nonetheless, I Just want to truly say thank you to Cheryl for all of her hard work and for treating each and every customer like they matter. So Hurricane Hillary hit over last weekend - and we stopped by to pick something up after the movies from across the street. My wife dropped me off in front so I didn't need to walk far - and I didn't realize she stayed "parked" near the front of the store - I was greeted properly coming in and I asked a store person for some help finding something. From behind the counter the manager shouts at me that "they have been ticketing cars parked there - you need to move your car!" I replied nicely that "I am sure my wife will move the car is someone asked her I won't be more than 5 minutes". I then tried to talk to the store person and then the manager again says this time with an attitude "that's an emergency zone ... move you car". I then replied "if there is an emergency- she will be the first to move the car since she is sitting in it". At that point he says "I don't like your attitude you won't be helped here". Quite shocked I said "I will call her now to move the car" and he said "too late you need to leave!" I was so shocked I asked the store person trying to help me "is he serious?" He said "he is the manager". So I left - now here is the curious parts 1) it's private property so I know the Tustin PD wouldn't write tickets - and 2) what authority does a tenant have to ask someone to move their car? Again there may have been 5 cars in the whole lot and it's a huge lot! Rather than make a scene or issue - I left - and while I am huge client there - I do spend several $100s there every six months - but not now or ever! This place has been our local place for purchasing sacramental wine for church. We are there every week. We are disappointed on the lack of consistency as the one purchasing had an ID. Usually the one purchasing has to show iD, we've never had to all show it. Since we didn't have it we werent able to make the purchase. However I did have a non alcoholic drink and I was not able to purchase that either per superviser Juanita. Juanita has a very sarcastic and non professional attitude. My brother later went to make the purchase and she denied him service as well. Juanita needs to be more professional and not sarcastic. She denied me buying a non alcholic drink . She denied my brother service later while he was alone. She also is not consistent in store policy as I mentioned we go there routinely. I will not only be leaving this review but will call her higher up since her attitude seemed more sarcastically discriminatory. Decent selection and decent prices however my issue is today I went to this store to buy 3 mixers (non alcoholic) and 1 Tequila. My wife was with me I made her join me even though she wanted to go to bemo instead. We went to check out. I give them my reward info and show them my idea without asking (I'm over 30). And 5 seconds later they say they need my wife's ID as well, keep in mind shes not even next to me in line and is looking at their wine/cigar boxes. I tell them she doesnt have her wallet (I told her she didnt need it as I was buying). They went into a 5 minute speech about how every member of the group needs an Id even though my wife wasnt buying anything. Also keep in mind my wife is older than me. End result they made an exception but made her leave the store in order for me to purchase the liquor. I really don't know how this place stays in business. During the week of Christmas I purchased a bottle of Jameson, a couple bottle of cab, a bottle of Hennessy and a bottle of vodka. The cashier asked me if I was over 21 (I'm 38) and never asked to look at my ID and I was able to make my purchase. Last night, I was with 3 people after working out, I did not bring my ID since I was not driving and my friend wanted to pick up a pack of beers. All 4 of us are 35+ but all Asian. The cashier stated when my fiancé walked up with the 4 beers that she needed to see everyone's ID. I didn't have mine since last time they didn't even check with my large purchase and we had gone to work out and I look well over my 30s. The manager then came by and told my friends that it was their policy and refused to sell us the stupid 4 beers. I know it was probably because we were Asian as I'm sure the line of white ppl behind us with all the young under 30 year olds were not going to be asked to be carded as well. I get it's your policy but why don't you train your team better to show some consistency. Not carding me for $300 worth of alcohol yet carding a party of 35+ year olds sounds a bit silly to me. And if your policy states under 30, we're all well over 30 pushing 40!
