Totoya is a Japanese sushi chain and so happy to see it now in Hawaii, with multiple locations in Aiea, Kaimuki, and Piikoi. We went to the Kaimuki location to see what the hype was about. I had their signature negitoro matsu bowl and it was absolutely divine! I was always hesitant to eat negitoro because of the negi or green onions in the name, but it tasted like a finer, soft ahi paste with ikura and uni. Delicious, although can be pricy at $30+ per entree. Highly recommend for authentic, negitoro experience.

Fresh fish at it's finest! Totoya offers fresh fish on rice in multiple ways! Menu posted outside for quick ordering process. Once you enter server is super friendly and will explain menu items, soup options, and offer suggestions if your unsure about what to order. Casual dining with seating around the chef, stop by for a Japanese dish in Kaimuki Town.

Amazing amazing amazing! Service was amazing and everything ran so smoothly. The ambiance is calm, cozy, and intimate as you're sitting at the chef's bar. The food -- amazing. The soup pairing just makes sense and this is such a comforting meal for me since I LOVE sushi and miss Japan.

WOW, I love negitoro bowls now. First time trying one of these and also Totoya, and it was impressive. It felt like l went back to Japan again. It's only a counter seating style type and can fit around 15-20 people. But, it's very clean and organized. You can also see the workers making your dish! The customer service was great, they're very attentive and kind. I got the tame bowl and added a shoyu egg (you need to add it, it made the flavor so much more intense!) When I first ate it, it was like a punch of flavor. It was filled with umami as the salmon roe pops in your mouth. Every bowl order also comes with a miso soup! They have a 7 step guide on how to best eat the bowl and the sides, I approve! So good :)

I came here with a party of five right at 11 AM on a weekday and no wait. I got the Tokujo and my husband got the Fukuju. We parked in a lot across the street. I devoured my entire bowl- rice and all. I got the shoyu egg sauce and the miso soup it comes with is incredible. My mother in law was with us and said the price was not bad for how much fish but not the same as Japan where she tried. For me, it was fantastic- fresh and flavorful. They care about quality of service and dining experience. I definitely want to come back here to get the Tokujo bowl again!

The negitoro bowls are amazing. The fish tastes fresh and even the miso soup is really good. You can tell they take pride in their bowls. I upgraded to the daily special salmon miso and it was 100 % worth it. They did not skimp. There were big chunks of salmon throughout. I like to add the egg yolk with shoyu because it melts into the bowl and gives everything this rich, creamy vibe. I'm also an ikura girl forever, so I added extra and no regrets. The pop and saltiness in each bite make it soo good. Service is super fast once you order, which I appreciate. The only downside is you have to wait outside in line and they do not take reservations, so peak hours can test your patience. But honestly... I still keep coming back. Fresh fish therapy is real.

I'm seriously drooling again just writing this review. Another amazing find thanks to Feed Mei Mei on YouTube! Dining at Totoya truly makes you feel like you've been transported back to Japan. We came for an early lunch and were lucky to grab the last couple of seats. They only have about 12-14 spots total, so it fills up quickly. I ordered the Nagomi bowl, which came with salmon, scallop, uni, shrimp, tuna, negitoro, and roe. My husband got the negitoro bowl and added snow crab. We both upgraded to the salmon miso soup, and it was so comforting and flavorful, definitely worth it. Each bowl comes with a couple pieces of nori, but you can request more for a small additional charge. And trust me, two pieces are not enough!. Everything tasted incredibly fresh and delicious. I only wish we had more time in Oahu to come back again, but we'll absolutely be returning on our next trip.

I came around 12pm on a Wednesday and there were many open seats, though the restaurant is pretty small. There is only one guy making the bowls, so service is a tad slow. The tuna in the negitoro was fresh, but the portion sizes felt smaller than I thought they'd be. My boyfriend got the nagomi and the salmon, scallop, and shrimp it came with (in addition to the negitoro) weren't that fresh. I'm glad I got to try it, but I wouldn't wait over 30 minutes for this place.

Totoya was one of the highlights of my Hawaii trip. The fish is so fresh and they gave lots of it. Prices were also reasonable, especially coming from someone who lives in NYC. It's a smaller restaurant so try to put your name down early, but service is at least efficient so you're not waiting forever.

If you really enjoy negitoro or kaisen don bowls then you'll be very satisfied with Totoya. Every time I go, I'm transported back to a restaurant in Japan. From the greeting at the door to the layout of the booth you sit at. The service is also on par with a Japanese restaurant -- fast and attentive. I have gone multiple times and every time the quality of the seafood used in the bowls are always top notch. While the portions may not look like a lot at first, you will definitely feel full after. I highly recommend getting the shoyu egg and extra nori to accompany your negitoro bowl. As far as the miso soup, you might want to consider getting the upgraded crab or shrimp miso soup.

Go early to find parking and be prepared to wait in line. This place is small but worth the wait! The food is amazing!! Just go and try it for yourself! Oishi!!

I've been wanting to try this place for the longest time after seeing it all over social media. I've been on a mission to find something close to my favorite spot in Japan, Tsujihan, and this is by far the closest I've found. The bowl was everything I was hoping for, but more since I was able to pay more for different upgrades such as more Ikura, egg yolk shoyu and shrimp head miso soup. The seafood was high quality. It satisfied my Tsujihan craving without having to fly to Japan. We came on a Wednesday night for dinner with a party of four and had no wait at all. Service was friendly. Out of all the places I've tried searching for something similar, this one comes the closest. I will definitely be back!

    Alex L.

One bite and I was instantly transported back to Japan. Everything from the quality of the fish to the house made shoyu, down to the perfect temperature of all the ingredients. Totoya blew my expectations out of the water. This was my single favorite bite in all of my hawaii trip. Phenomenal! Loved this place service was great server and chefs were so sweet, good vibes too. Lots of happy eaters.

When we first walked in no one was to be seen in the kitchen or at the host stand, we thought it was closed but then saw a couple sitting in the dining room to the left. Appetizer - $8 for 2 pieces of corn bread, corny bread , one came out overly grills so tasted burnt and pretty much overpowered any flavors of the butter/ honey. And the larger piece was the burnt one. Entrees- Keakas Fried chicken , comes with rice and very little pickles, $20. The chicken had a good crisp to it and was nice and juicy but the sauce was disappointing. Sauce on the menu says soy, honey, garlic. The soy sauce tasted really dark, didn't taste any garlic or honey and pretty much ruined the taste of the dish. KH burger- $20 burger was odd shaped and bigger than the bun, which was impressive at first but it was ordered medium and when cut open it was more like a rare to medium rare. Very red inside and due to the size of it seemed even more rare. It would also look way better with green or butter lettuce. Maybe it was just an off day or we ordered the wrong items...
