I would like to explain why my son is no longer involved with this organization. My 11 year old son…read morecame home from karate class limping and unable to put his legs together. He proceeded to show me a big purple welt on his inner thigh, given to him by his 7th degree 'master'. The instructor was demonstrating bear-hug defense and purposely pinched my son extremely hard on his inner thigh, leaving a painful purple welt and leaving my son questioning why a trusted, respected teacher of martial arts would inflict needless pain on him. As a parent and a student of martial arts, I needed to know as well. 'Master' Jim explained to me on the phone, that by his choice, he does those things to the children to "toughen the kids up". How about wind sprints until puking? How about kicking a pad until you can't lift your leg?? You take it upon yourself to physically hurt our children with your own hands? 'Master' Jim was anything but apologetic on the phone and kept preaching that he's been demonstrating this move for over 20 years. At the age of 11, my son has been immersed in karate and kickboxing for most of his life. He's always full of new bruises and welts from competing, so I'm not too concerned with superficial injuries. We just moved to the area and thought Villari's would be a good fit for him. I was dead wrong. I would never subject my children to a martial arts instructor, who sends the kids home with marks that he intentionally left on them. This was during a demonstration in front of the class. They were not actively grappling or sparing. This was a red flag, not only to the injury of my son, but to be teaching a self defense technique that utilizes a pinch to the skin.... He declined to demonstrate the pinch on me, after I willing told him I'd love to come in to drill bear-hug defense with him. #mcdojo

Buyer beware of a place that pushes past accolades, or their father's past accolades. We had experience with a different ATA organization before we moved here, and I wish we had sought out ATA again. Instead, we found a place close to home and the difference is night and day. ATA focuses on character development, real skills, encouraging kids and preventing bullying. The other place focused on money. If you have any doubts, please just try ATA West. We actually got started here through a Groupon, and I am so glad we did. My 7 year old came home tonight asking me what he could do to learn more about self-discipline. He has committed to caring for our dog and running nightly clean-ups-encouraging the whole family to do this. He wants to show us that he can take initiative and do these things without being reminded. I have no doubt he will follow through. This is why I love the ATA program. It is holistic and truly helps your child develop virtues that serve them for a life time.

Then I got a message on Facebook that a friend of mine passed away from a stroke. This made me want to take it up a notch. Knowing I didn't like the gym and wanted to do something different I read about Krav Maga. I thought to myself...what the heck, let's send an email and see if they'd take on out of shape fat guys into their fold. Lejla, the owner called me and we had a great conversation. A day or two later I went in to have my trial class to see if I liked it. I loved it. And I mean LOVED IT! While I knew I couldn't do most of it, I was ok with it. Why??? Because of Lejla and John and how encouraging they are and how motivating they are. Lejla and John are amazing people to be around and their energy is contagious. The classes and people that attend are great. I'd consider them all closer then most family members. When you go, don't be intimidated because you can't do stuff. Try, try, try! You're there to learn real world self defense with the bonus of getting into shape. No one there cares what you look like, the shape you're in or if you have any previous experience. Every class you either learn something new or practice what you've learned. No one puts anyone else down or judges. Let me first state the reviews before mine are from a previous owner who apparently was quite…read moreunscrupulous. This is not the same group or the same management. I've talked extensively with the current owner David Walker as well as trained with him for the last few months. My children have also trained with him for the same amount of time. Two coworkers I've known for almost a decade have trained with David as well. His training is tier one as the classes are a good mix of intensity, technique as well as background information as to why you do what you do. I leave each class as if I have learned something new I can apply as well as improved my skills on previously learned material. So, the training is A plus and better than any other martial arts groups I have trained with in the past. David is excellent with my kids who look forward to class each week as well as excitedly show me what they have learned as well as beg me to show them what was done in my class. It is a great time for them to work on discipline, confidence and mindset as well as balance, flexibility and strength. This is the best extracurricular investment I've made for them. Lastly, I want to say David is a man of integrity and encouragement. He has kept his word and made sure I've maximized my learning opportunities. The folks in the class are terrific and some of the more experienced students have been extremely helpful in keeping an eye on me and correcting things when David is with another student. I wish I had found this group earlier and started sooner, but as David says "We're starting now." Join us.
