But like a lot of people we now have a few friends who live in Levenshulme which adds to the attraction of Trove Bakery and the Antique Village. So when we do find our way to Levy at drinking time, we go where it's always been open and welcoming if maybe a bit rough around the edges. Fiddlers Green is that kind of Irish pub where the full warmth of the Irish community can be felt. And probably one of the best pint of Guiness served in Manchester. It's ideally placed in the middle of the village on the A6 so very convenient for a meet up if you need to go elsewhere after that. In brief, it's not the greatest pub, it doesn't really serve quality booze but it's full of life and serve great Guiness.

This pub is probably about a mile away from Didsbury Station and not particularly close to the…read morerailway line. It doesn't look like it used to be a fire station (like the Lead Station in Chorlton) or a police station. I can't find any information about it online. The pub itself can only really be described as an old man's pub. However, it is located in a quaint little building on Wilmslow Road, and being a Marston's pub, it does good beer. Like nearby pub Fletcher Moss it is one of those pubs that I would have detested a few years ago, but that is becoming ever more appealing with the more cups of tea I drink and episodes of Countdown I watch. It is somewhere you are guaranteed of a pint with the background noise of old men's chatter rather than Beyonce's Bootalicious (I'm looking at the Pitcher and Piano). Be warned if you're planning on visiting the Station as part of the Didsbury Dozen. Although I've not heard of any stories of inebriated pubcrawlers being turned away from this establishment (unlike Fletcher Moss), I wouldn't recommend bringing an entourage of 20 rugby players with 11 pints each inside them into this place. If you know anything about the history behind the name, then I'd be genuinely interested to find out!

Didsbury is fast losing the little village feel that makes it so nice, with chain bars and restaurants staging a swift takeover. Now Pitcher & Piano, O'Neill's and Zizzi line its streets. There's another breed of independent bar in Didsbury too, the alternative pseudo-hippie middle-class studenty bar such as Saints & Scholars and The Art of Tea, both of which I happen to like. The point though, is that the old style pub is a dwindling species. Even the old favourite The Didsbury, has gone a bit posh and gastro. The Station is one of the few remaining little pubs with a unique old character, top quality ales and a friendly personal atmosphere for a reasonable price. They even have some beautiful and (relatively) locally brewed ales. Its not even an old man pub, as its perfectly welcoming and nobody would be out of place there. Great place. P.S. Regards the previous review, its better not to take 20 rugby boys anywhere, and don't ever do the 'Didsbury Dozen'.

It was a busy Sunday afternoon as ManU v Liverpool was on the television so the entire town rocked in at about the same time we did. As a result, there was a slight push and shove to get to the bar and our food took a little while to arrive but it was worth it. We managed to score a table in the corner, away from the tvs, and settled in with some excellent local ale. The staff were friendly and took our food orders efficiently and warned us that there was a 40 minute wait for the suet pies. We were ok with this. Unfortunately the 40 minutes turned out to be over an hour but considering the number of people in there and the top quality nosh that arrived at our tables we were happy to wait. It was gooooooood food - big servings of warm, hearty food that you expect from a local pub. We were all patting our bellies by the end of it, feeling very satisfied. Definitely a winner for anyone out walking in the area.

The King Bill has great kerb-appeal, being built in the early 19th century - so has plenty of character. There's a sizeable free car park next to it which was an added bonus. Inside, what was probably a three-room pub back in the day is now open and more spacious-looking. To the left and right as you enter there's table seating (one has a coveted wood-burning stove). The bar area which has TVs showing the footy got very busy whilst we were there, so your visit might not be as quiet as you'd have hoped. Six hand pumps including three local ales from Greenfield (Silver Owl was a cracking pint) and Millstone breweries are served together with some seriously hearty home cooked food. The portions are generous and everything was delicious. There was a bit of a wait but the quality of the food more than made up for that.

What better way to while away an hour or 2 than to sit drinking a pint or 2 of beer watching steam trains and vintage diesels pass by. However, beware!!! If its a themed day, such as Thomas the Tank, then the place will be full of young children running around and families using the tables which are intended for the pub even though they aren't buying anything. On this occasion I had a Green Bullet IPA, which was well priced at £2.95, though it tasted a little bit flat.

We have been known to cause problems, so I was initially a bit worried that the bar staff would struggle to control us if one thing led to another. However, they managed to restrain a few of my mates quite well when they tried having it out with an individual who claimed that we were 'southern' - which we are. Obviously the fact that some of us did cause a problem and had it out with locals was negative but that was expected as the lads and I are widely renowned for that. I find that this pub, with exceptional ambience and strong community links, gave us a good experience and overall handled us really well. The pricing was reasonable, leading the posse to drink an uncouth amount of beer (which we are regarded to frequently do so), so I would 100% return here. Unfortunately, I am not sure when a return to Wigan is imminent.

Oh, but this means I can go to Jackson's boat! WIN! So, I cycle down the Mersey - well, down the path technically! And onward. Just about managed to go past Chorlton Water park and Jackson's Boat on the way out, and carry on to Sale Water park. This I feel means I'm definitely going to have earn't a pint. The sun really was blazing, and there were many people out walking their dogs, running along the banks or even paddling a kayak along the river. I stopped briefly as the kayak appeared to have got stuck on the rocks of a rapids section, and internally cheered them on as they floated on again. Canadian geese were also out en masse - perhaps they felt Manchester was better in summer? I reckon!! After a circuit of the Sale Water park, and the sun setting it was definitely time for the return journey. AND THAT WELL EARNT BEER. Hellooo Jacksons! It's a large outdoor area, and plenty of others where there with their bikes. And a rarity for Manchester, dogs too. They're well catered for, and the pub even supplies dog bowls and water for hot dogs! Humans are well catered for too with a selection of 3 ales on tap, including both Landlord and Black Sheep! The stable quality ales. My beer was refreshing, and I'm sure tasted even better because I got off my arse that evening! It's been awhile since I was here - probably was a Sunday afternoon date, with a fairly good traditional Sunday roast meal. The inside has that traditional pub feel & has a variety of different sections. So long since I've been that the tram line also hadn't been put in. It's in the distance, and not going to cause any interference with chilling out. So in summary. Go for a walk or a cycle - it's doable from Chorlton, Withington, West Didsbury easily. Take a mate or a date. Grab a beer after. Relax.

It was a…read moresummer's afternoon and the beer garden was full of families and dog-walkers who had stopped to rehydrate themselves after a walk down the sunny Mersey or around the water park. Since then I have visited this pub on numerous occasions and always been pleased with the service and atmosphere. OK, so there's not a huge range of bottled foreign lagers available like there is in the majority of pubs and bars in Chorlton, but there is a sufficient range of lagers, ales and ciders. They also serve standard pub fare, which looks pretty tasty. On a recent snow day my housemate and I decided to go for a stroll down the Mersey - any excuse for a visit to this pub! With the roads to the pub impassable and with heavy snow still falling I had guessed that we'd probably be some of the only people there. How wrong I was! The place was packed to the rafters and the beer garden staged a huge snowball fight amongst the punters (photos on the pub's website). All in all Jackson's Boat is a great pub to relax in the sun or to shelter from the snow.
