The oldest of…read morethe old King Philip's War was a nasty affair with atrocities and lots of horrible things occurring on both the Native American and English sides. Towns were burned and people murdered. No quarter was asked and none was given. One particularly brutal incident was called Nine Men's Misery. It started on March 20, 1676, when Capt Piece of the colonists let a group of troops after what was left of the Narragansett Tribe. The troops got a bit too over confident and walked right into an ambush and were slaughtered by the Narragansetts. Virtually all of the troops were killed but nine managed to survive the battle and were captured, tortured and then killed. Not exactly unexpected considering what the English were doing to the Narragansetts. Most of their villages were burned and the women and children executed . When other English troops found the bodies of the dead captives. they immediately buried the bodies and put up a monument site of rocks over the graves so the memory of the incident would never be forgotten. The pile of rocks have been tended to ever since and is now considered the oldest veterans memorial in the country. It's not exactly an exciting or aesthetically stunning memorial but it an extremely spooky and fascinating place to hike out and actually find. The area has lots of cool hiking trails besides the one leading to the memorial but the bugs are incredibly bad in these woods. Lovely stone walls and beautiful trees, this would probably be a great place for a winter or fall hike. A thoughtful place to reflect and remember what it was like back then during these horrible wars. Right and wrong, good and evil are just words. Pain, death and suffering was the reality.

This place holds a special place in my heart. My father and I used to walk here when I was young.read more

This new holiday tradition uses over 350,000 LED lights to illuminate Boston's skyline. Blink! is a must-see holiday show, perfect for all ages. Nightly performances begin at 4:30 and run every half an hour throughout the property. The best place to see the show is near the giant Christmas tree. Then you can turn around to see the rest of the lights in Faneuil Hall blink too. The show isn't too long - enough time to have fun, but not have children get bored. I watched the show with a group of adults and we enjoyed it as well. It's definitely worth checking out while you're in the Faneuil Hall area!

I wouldn't make a special trip here just for this place but include it with some other activity that's close by. They have a beautiful giant Christmas Tree decorated with over 350,000 lights. They play pre recorded Classic Christmas Songs & sync them to the lights for a show called BLINK. They have the show numerous times each night after dark. They post the schedule. Also don't forget to check out both sides of Faneuil Hall near the Christmas tree, there are beautiful Ice Sculptures. There was The Disney Moana Ice Sculpture & The Ice Sofa which was really Cool on the other side. They let you sit on the Ice Sofa. Don't worry you sit down on a cushion so you don't freeze or stick to the surface. The colors are blue & pink. REMEMBER TO TAKE YOUR PHONE OR CAMERA WITH YOU. YOU TAKE A SELFIE ON THE SOFA & BECAUSE OF THE LIGHTS & THE CRYSTAL CLEAR ICE YOU LOOK LIKE YOU'RE A MEMBER OF THE BLUE MAN GROUP! PRETTY COOL! It used to be, you had to have mega bucks & be really rich to have the Good Life, not anymore. The Game has changed. You've been Upgraded. Now You Can Live Like a King on a Limited Budget!

I've dined at a few dozen Italian restaurants, wandered through historic landmarks, and even spent quiet moments in the old cemeteries tucked between brick facades and wrought iron. Returning recently for a day of exploring with Mrs. K., I was eager to share some of that charm -- those narrow streets that smell like espresso and marinara, the echo of Paul Revere's midnight ride, and the layered stories etched into every corner. But what stood out this time, more than the cannoli or the cobblestones, was how difficult the neighborhood can be for folks with mobility challenges. The North End is a feast for the senses, but not always a friend to the feet. Sidewalks are uneven, often narrow, and sometimes disappear altogether. Curb cuts are inconsistent, and many storefronts (especially the older, family-run trattorias) have steps without railings or ramps. We found ourselves rerouting a few times, dodging delivery trucks and squeezing past sidewalk café setups that left little room for a walker or wheelchair. Even the Freedom Trail, which winds through the area, occasionally dips into terrain that feels more 18th-century than 21st-century accessible. That said, the spirit of the place remains magnetic. We managed fabulous espressos at a quiet spot on Salem Street. A few blocks away, we paused at Copp's Hill Burying Ground, where the view over the harbor still stirs something deep and reflective. But I couldn't help noticing how much of the North End's magic is locked behind physical barriers. How many stories, meals, and moments are harder to reach if you're not nimble on your feet. It's a neighborhood that deserves to be experienced by everyone, and I hope the city continues to find ways to make that possible. Because the North End isn't just Boston's Little Italy. It is a living museum, a community, and a reminder that history should be accessible, not just preserved. [Review 1117 of 2025 - 1262 in Massachusetts - 24670 overall]

(Note: If you have never heard of Dewey Cheetham & Howe, please stop reading now. This review will not enlighten you). We did not know what to expect at Car Talk Plaza since Tom & Ray's retirement. We found the odd shaped building (thanks Yelp!), with the odd shaped elevator, and took it to the third floor expecting at best to find a locked door. However, after tapping on the door, we tried it and it miraculously opened! There was absolutely nobody in the office! Evidently Doug "the subway fugitive, not a slave to fashion, bongo boy frogman" Berman and "John 'Bugsy' Lawlor were not yet back from the Sliced Ham, Razor Clam, Cherry Jam, Rack of Lamb, Grand Slam. We thought for a moment about having a romantic interlude to the sounds of "Are We There Yet Mama?" by Kelly Clark and the Wild River Band (show number 200102). However, we became consumed inspecting all the interesting gifts and memorabilia throughout the office. Once we were sated, we signed the guest book, put a pin in the Visitor's Map, grabbed an autographed postcard (or two), and proceeded back to the odd shaped elevator and back to Harvard Square. A good time was had by all.
