I have noticed this shop when I have been in the Southover Grange gardens before, but I had never…read moreventured in. I expected it to be small, but actually it expands down the length of the north wing of Southover Grange House. It is a shop/gallery which sells the work of the Sussex guild, a group of designers artists and craftspeople, whose members live and work in Sussex and the surrounding area. The various artists' and designers' work for sale includes pottery, jewellery, furniture and art. It ranges in price and style, from homey crockery painted with cartoon-y chickens, to elegantly painted silk clothing, to wooden furniture for upwards of two grand a piece. The guild also runs classes, such as how to make fused glass jewellery, or turn wooden bowls, or do quilting. To inquire about courses you can telephone or visit the shop.

With everything from embroidered cards and pictures, to hats, bags, clothes, gorgeous jewellery, glasswork, workwork (the wooden bowls are amazing, but you do pay for their beauty!), paintings, furniture. A lot of it is a bit out of my price range i have to admit, but its very inspiring to look round and see what people have crafted out of various materials. Its the sort of place that leaves you wanting to go home and make something!

Yet another Brighton convenience store/corner shop, North Street Food and Wine is a little more…read moreconvenient than most corner shops for me, being directly on my way back home from the North Laine area. I often seem to end up here on my way home, if money's tight, picking up some cheap grub, and for that this store is absolutely fine. Just don't expect anything too fancy: it is just a convenience store. Run by the same people that run All Sorts across the road, North Street Food and Wine is definitely the better of the two shops. They have more on offer, not just booze and magazines, and it can legitimately replace a cheap food shop if you're just looking for microwave pizzas and crisps. I have to admit the occasional horrible food binge: every now and again, food like that is all I really want, making this the right place to go. As stated above, this is a convenience store: don't expect the world from the stock. If you're looking for anything beyond cheap, tasteless snacky bits and pieces, you should be shopping elsewhere. Also, offering lots of cheap food but smacking on a huge card handling fee is not my idea of a fair deal. Especially when it seems to change depending on who's serving... In the end, North Street Food and Wine is convenient and has a larger stock than most convenience stores, so it is a lot better than many of the convenience stores that dot Brighton's shopping landscape. Just don't expect healthy food, or anything out of the ordinary.

This convenience store looks very similar to the one opposite the road(All Sorts? Or All In Here? I…read moreforget...), so I guess they're owned by the same people. If so, then this store is the better of the two (although lacking an internet cafe, but then why would you need another one 30 seconds away?!). Here you'll find your usual array of cheap snack foods, as well as a few basic grocery/household items. They also sell individual fresh fruit pieces, displayed outside, which can be quite handy if you're on the go.

The fact that it has a lot of stuff is quite good, however it is generally a bit more pricey than other charity shops. Tops come in at around £6.50, which I'd say is about 30% more than standard charity shop prices. Plus, I pulled out a shirt that I quite like the look of, to find that it was stained all down the front and still cost £6.50. What's more, there were a couple of dresses in there going for £25. In my opinion that is too much, even if they are quite nice.

It's a relatively small shop, but they have a very good concentration of lady's clothes, accessories and home ware. It's all very tasteful, pastel colours and 'homemade' looking items that all seem rather characterful. I bought my mum two white cushions, slightly embroidered cushions. I also picked up a pair of earrings that had been reduced to £6. For solving my birthday crisis, I can't really say a bad word against Altjeringa.

There's also traditional toys that hark back to a simpler time: wooden animals, knitted booties, lots of classic books, bears, puzzles and handmade clothes. It makes me wish I was 2 again. A lovely seafront location where they also organise 'Boddler's' groups for mums and Toddlers to break loose.
