The store was clean and the staff were helpful in allowing me to try on how the shirts fit. What made the dress shirts stand out were the customizations from regular, trim, to super trim fits. I love how the collar stays are metal, perfect for meeting with C-suites. The fabric of the dress shirts are very thick and all the shirts were 100% cotton. I loved how I was able to customize my shirts by adding a pocket and getting them all shipped back to me in the US for a slight shipping charge! The store had a few promos for 4-5 shirts purchased at a time. ...now only if they had stores on the West coast in the US! ...until then, their online website will be my new go to!

Its slightly expensive but I have happened across some great sales in there. But then again I see spending more than £80 one piece of clothing excessive...others don't. The only real gripe is the bad attitude of one of the staff there, who can be quite short with you and generally rude (mentioning no names). The rest seem nice though. This really is a one of a kind and truly unique store, from the minute you walk in the door you feel a buzz. The staff are a crazy bunch of extroverts, one was sitting on the counter telling her colleague some story about what happened her the night before. After taking a swift look around at the beautifully crafted menswear I made my way downstairs, the green walls of the winding staircase are lined with drawings. For me downstairs was the highlight, here I was faced with a stuffed hog, German Fighter Pilot jackets from the second world war, Victorian Pea coats and some other interesting artifacts. On making my way back up the stairs the sent of citronella filled my nostrils and I got chatting to the owner who told me that he happens to be the co-founder of Agent Provocateur, he also informed me that the name of the store comes from a book with the same title, written by Arthur Morrison and takes place in the London slums in the 1890's. If you are shopping in the area, do not miss it. I absolutely love The Mercantile. It's one of my favorite shops in London to poke around in and enjoy. The collection strikes a very delicate balance of nice, but not overly spendy. You can easily find a few things that will increase your joy, but not deplete your bank account. Mostly women's clothing and accessories (jewelry, shoes, scarves, etc) but also a fair amount of home goods (candles, frames, bits and bobs). What is the stand out factor? The sheer number of items. You know those shops you go into that are SO BEAUTIFUL, but like, there are about 8 items in the store. You know in about 8 seconds if you want to stay in there or not, usually not. Well, the Mercantile is the opposite. There are things EVERYWHERE. Hanging from the walls, stashed in corners, piled in cute heaps, everywhere. You could look for hours and I guarantee you wouldn't have seen everything. It's like a treasure hunt. So enjoyable. DO NOT MISS THE BASEMENT. That's where all my finds come from. Brave those steep stairs and get your soon-to-be-more-stylish self down there. My most recent visit yielded: *Herschel bag (half off, now £28!), which has made me a much hipper mum (using as nappie bag!) *Gorgeous scarf -- just £20.
