Finally. They brought the best place ever to Iowa. I am a fan. Right when you walk into the store, walk to the back and grab a small sample cup of their joe because 1) you can't go wrong with TJOE's coffee & 2) you need that extra caffeine boost for what's ahead of you. Trader Joe's is very nicely organized and their staff is always super nice. Their selection of foods, spices, supplements, wines, is abundant and very fairly priced. I love how everything is Joe's brand and it's a brand you can trust. Kids carts are always a +. If a store has those baby carts, you know it's a good store. Overall, if this place were closer to where I lived, it'd be the only place I go to for grocery shopping. My favorite grocery store in Des Moines, Iowa. After spending time on the east coast and visiting the west coast, I was really excited to have access to Trader Joe's in the Midwest. They carry quality products, both organic and ethic at cheap prices. There isn't as much of a variety in products at this Trader Joe's branch as seen in the large cities; however, they have enough top notch products that 100s of options are not necessary. If you are comparing the grocery options here to Whole Foods, then you should note that the prices are about half as cheap. The workers here are really friendly. And they always have samples of their seasonal coffee with soy creamer and stevia in the back. I really like to try the tasty food samples as well. I get a guide every month that is a lot of fun to look through. They have the cheapest specialty cheeses, imported chocolate, organic produce, and ethic wine selection around. Plenty of options for gluten-free and vegetarian diets. The frozen food selection is decent for those without the means to cook. Essentially, you can get your entire grocery list of items here in top-notch quality at a decent price. What's not to love? read more

This Trader Joe's is an Aldi powered anomaly in the space-time continuum. It's a wormhole that will allow visitors to enter from Iowa and temporarily travel back in time to 2001 and to the west coast of the United States to see what they were enjoying a decade ago. Superb items, including fine cheeses and meats that are sourced our of Europe. Prices are always very reasonable and you'll be able to entertain the adventuresome side of your palette with many ethnic items and new flavors. Ahhh, Trader Joe's. We have this special relationship where I hand over a little more cash than I should, for more interesting, high-quality foods than I should have bought. It's been going on for 15 years, and I'm not going to end it just yet. Sometime I simply crave things like Greco-Roman Pizza (with roasted peppers, feta, and olives) and the Smoked Gouda cheese slices which are to die for. The meatless options here are second to none in terms of variety and price, I should know I had that "stage" in college (who didn't right?). The meat/fish options are wonderful too like the chicken sausages or the stuffed flounder. Overall the theme with this store is unique ingredients and convenience, which I love. The service is helpful, and they go above and beyond to help customers, whether it means finding if an item is discontinued or giving you a food sample of any item you'd like upon request. This is the only location in Iowa and living 4 blocks from it was something I had never had the luxury of living in Illinois. I like Iowa too but that's a different review. :) PLEASE GO. When I moved to WDM from the Bay Area, the first thing I did was write to TJ and Whole Foods corporate offices to open stores in town. With TJ's now open for over a year and Whole Foods soon to open, I think I can safely say: You're welcome Des Moines Metro Area. I did my bit to make you more civilized. Love, love, love shopping at Trader Joe's. Great fresh produce! Lots of breads,crackers, cookies, and candies to choose from. But there is oh so much more! Canned goods, pastas, spices, wine and beer selection, fresh and frozen meats, fresh prepared meal selections, and oh good heavens the frozen meals!!! Everything you need on your grocery list is here. The store is clean. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. The downside? The parking lot kinda stinks! This is my number one go to place for groceries. Only downside it is so far away but the prices are worth the drive. They have really good deals on frozen fish (shrimp, swordfish, calamari, you name it) and I love the selections of their fresh veggies. I really love being able to park quickly, and get through the store in a reasonable amount of time. I rate this 5-because of the quality and the value of their products. The service is normally good, I only got one cashier (a college-looking kid), who was callous, but I have had PLENTY others who were courteous and friendly - so I can get over the one experience. I have been hooked on TJ since I moved here last year, and I normally go for their organic fruits, veggies, dairy, sometimes their beans and some frozen organic fruits. Some of my fave items: organic frozen wild blueberries, organic frozen brown rice (a busy mother's solution to dinner!), organic sweet corn (great for anything), organic canned beans, $3 chucks (great for cooking). I wish that their fruit offering is more consistent (some weeks, I can't find any apples to make apple sauce for my toddler daughter) - but in overall, they are cheaper than some of the organic items you can find at Target or Hy-Vee (yikes!). read more

Awesome recent additions to their gluten-free options, like Everything Bagels and other kinds of sandwich breads. Service is always great, too. Today, I forgot the cream cheese for aforementioned bagels and an associate tam and grabbed it for me. If they were annoyed, you couldn't tell for the smiles! This TJ's is in the handy West Des Moines area. A little vanilla cookie cutter bedroom community. That is not all bad. TJ's has a limited range of groceries, but most of the stuff is tested and as a result, tasty before they start selling it. Most of the frozen stuff is incredible. The only thing to stay away from are the prepared salads and sushi. They are just terrible, and most places selling these things have the same mediocrity in those plastic tubs. I do not buy a lot of fruit produce here... just veggies. The fruit is hit and miss IMO. Our cashier was awesome on Saturday... he opened a chocolate bar for us to try and then stopped mid-transaction to give away the remainder... hilarious. Trader Joes! Where do I start?! I can get a can of organic fair trade coffee for 6 bux! 3-buck-chuck! Japanese fried rice! Vegan! The vegan cheese shreds are pretty tasty on nachos. So much dry food and the cheapest bananas! I seriously cannot say enough good things about TJs. They took away the soyrizo I love and the soy yogurt I grew fairly accustomed to (I'm dealing but I hope they come back). I live just down the street from this location and i've been here a few times with pleasurable experience. I have to say that this is a very small store and it's always busy but it does have unique selection of organic items but not a huge variety as in other larger stores(hyvee)(whole foods) It's a pick your selected items store not make this your #1 destination store for me. I was in late on Sunday evening shopping and thought the store closed at 10 pm. The whole time I was in the store, the employees were pleasant and very helpful. After I checked out (at 9:25pm) the cashier walked us to the door, which I thought was very kind, and unlocked the door. Until that moment, I didn't know the store closed at 9pm. Love love love Trader Joe's! Please come to Cedar Rapids!! We live in Marion, IA and anytime we know someone is going to Des Moines or we go visit, we always have them pick up some 2 Buck Chuck for us and I bring my grocery list. Really, I still can't believe what I can get for the price when I get home. Last time we went, I grabbed a bunch of new cheeses from their amazing selection, some Thai red and green curry sauce and of course, our wine :) I forgot my cooler, but I would have gotten some produce or maybe some meat, and if it wasn't a two hour drive on a 98 degree, definitely would have gotten some flowers as well. Something that truly sets this place apart are the allergy product guides. They have a list, by allergy, what products they carry which can be consumed. Coming from a no gluten, no wheat, no dairy, no eggs and no treenuts/peanuts family, this place makes shopping so much easier. Even if you don't have allergy concerns in your family, Trader Joe's is still the best place around for the necessary grocery shopping trip, the prices are amazing and the selection and quality beats any other place I've shopped. read more

I've always loved Trader Joes, but this evening took the cake! As my girlfriend and I went in to get some groceries, a torrential storm came out of nowhere. We got a bit rained on (no big deal) but as we entered the store an employee was standing at the entrance with a huge umbrella asking customers who were leaving if they wanted to be escorted out to their cars. What a nice gesture! Later as we were shopping, the storm basically turned into a hurricane with crazy winds and wild lightning. Customers did not want to leave the store and stood in the doorway again with their kids in tow. Another employee wheeled out a cart with bottled water and cookies for every one waiting the storm out. Thank you Trader Joes for going above and beyond, I truly appreciated it! read more

Trader Jos has excellent organic choices at bargain prices. Also great wine and beer choices! This location is busy busy though, so getting through the aisles in tricky. They do however have a ton of employees making the checkout process fast and easy. I stock up on their frozen foods, the mini tacos, burritos, chicken fried rice and fruits for smoothies. We also love the sparkling French berry lemonade. My husband and I endearingly call it "crack berry juice" cause it's so addictive!! We drink it in our crystal to make it a fancy treat :) read more

When I first heard about this place everyone talked about their quality but seriously I don't see it when i visited this grocery store. I love fruits when went to buy them from these guys..First they were not fresh and I see they were almost ready to be trashed , couple of them has fungus and the vegetable section is decent. No way to write a review good enough for my favorite place to shop for GOOD food - Trader Joe's! I've been following a special diet which requires some items I cannot find at my local Fareway or Wal-Mart. Although I live about an hour away, anytime I'm in Des Moines I stop at TJ's! Their grass-fed meats are reasonably priced, the organic product is awesome, and the flower selection is great. I just bought 3 of the organic herbs that are a must on my food plan; Oregano, Italian Parsley, and Basil. While in Des Moines for business I stopped in the store and stocked up on some essentials. I do like Trader Joes. The first one I visited was on a trip back to St Louis a long time ago right after I had moved away from the city. I wish we could have one in I.C. or Coralville. I do like New Pi, don't get me wrong, but Trader Joes carries different things so I would still shop New Pi but I like both places. The checker forgot to ring me for two of the awesome Trader Joes grocery bags and rang me for only one and then said don't worry about it the second one is on me.
