St Mary's is a school of around 630 pupils. It's does extremely well in the league tables, which I, personally, disapprove of. I feel that SATs should be scrapped. The school community is very caring whilst encouraging personal independance. Each pupil is encouraged to be efficacious, as well as a good team member. The upper years have regularly won trophies at different sports, and interests also include the environment, St Mary's Organic Garden, music, drama and many other disciplines. My daughter plays in the school band, and sings in three choirs.

The beach is 7 miles of golden sand, the nightlife is really good and caters for all tastes so whether you're in to hip-hop, r'n'b, pop, heavy metal... whatever, you'll be happy in Bournemouth. The town is very pretty, the array of shops isn't vast but it's enough. It has been rated by the gaurdian as the no.1 new university, and I certainly think it lives up to that reputation by virtue of its media and tourism courses. The animation course is said to be the no.1 in UK. The Multimedia journalism course is also counted among the top 4 or 5 media courses in the country. I am a mature student and feel very lucky to be given a stab at higher education. The location is great, the facilities are great, welcoming and friendly and anyone can make the most of it here too, my son is attending the nursery on the campus and they are great! So peace of mind and a great adventure ahead of me cant be bad at all!

The Hartley library is impressive to say the least. It has a massive variety of books and other resources, as well as several computer labs for students to do their work, electronic research, or to simply use the computer as they do not have an internet connection at home. Having been a member of the gym I have to agree with reggi. Its a rather impressive gym. It has a great swimming pool and courses for people that cannot swim. In the gym itself there is a wide range of exercise equipment which is good, but a lot of the time when you go there, one or two of each type of equipment is usually out of order which means that for the more popular equipment there is usually a long wait or a person or two breathing down your back for you to move, which is rather unpleasant. The student clubs and pubs at the university are nice and very friendly, with decent prices for anything that you might want. When it comes to the quality of teaching, I have more than a few qualms about the university. I have studied two degrees at the university in different departments, and I have had countless problems with each degree. In my first degree the admin staff as well as the teaching staff were completely incompetent! Due to health and family reasons I was away for a considerable time from my course, which they were aware of, and said, come back when you feel ok, and then end up capping everyone of my units due to lack of attendance, later on, I am forced to do resits whilst suffering from a severe case of pneumonia as a result of the capping. I will not go into detail about which my 2nd degree is due to me still doing it, but what I will say is that it is ranked within the top 5 in the country, but I've had quiet a few issues with this degree as well. Of all of my courses that I am doing this year, there has only been one lecturer which has taught his course well, and has been useful as a lecturer. The rest of the lecturers are unprepared for many of the lectures and seminars, and are in general not that helpful. Southampton is a great place to be a student; you will in most cases get to know a lot of great people which you will end up keeping in touch with throughout your life, you will end up getting a degree and hopefully a career path for the future. Personally I have to say that I am less than impressed, not only because of my experience, but because of similar experiences or worse experiences by friends.

The staff were fantastic and easy to approach, and the school has a close connection to the local church and go there for christmas services etc. Get's good results too, particularly compared to some of the other local schools. The building itself is fairly modern looking with big glass windows, so you can see through when waiting for your kids in the playground. Regular newsletters are sent out to keep parents informed.

Having had many dealings with St Mark's over the years I have found the school, church and wider parish community to be most professional, welcoming and caring for all children concerned. Past pupil experiences can often be blurred. In your reference to their recent OFSTED, the former Headteacher Mr Harrison led the school in exemplary fashion setting high standards for both children and staff. The new Headteacher Mrs Armstrong has recently taken over the helm and we are sure she will take off from where Mr Harrison left and will lead the school into a new future. OFSTED do not grade schools so things can START to improve they grade them GOOD because they HAVE improved!! It is not a willy-nilly process but a professional and accurate viewpoint of the direction the school is going, and in St Mark's case that direction is UP!! Come on St Mark's the only way is UP!

When I first moved here I was told not to send my children to St. Mark's and I am very pleased that I did not take this advice and chose this school for my children. People should not listen to tittle-tattle and perhaps take time to come and look around the school. The children receive a wonderful education in a happy and caring environment and their needs certainly take priority. The staff are friendly and willing to support and help children and parents whenever they can. Ofsted results were 'Good' with some 'Outstanding' features which proves that this is an exceptional school and one to be proud of.

The canteen is an extermely pleasant room with floor to ceiling windows, giving a panoramic view of Holes Bay. The food is serve yourself salads, and hot food like a carvery. I never quite know where to start, so always check out the hot food first. Meats are beautifully cooked, and sliced generously. Vegetables are always great. The salads are always a dead cert. They vary from potatoe salad, mixed bean, carrot, beetroot, pasta salads and variatins on any salad I've come across. The prices are very good as, because they are a charity, the RNLI are not allowed to profit above a certain margin. The canteen has variously sized tables with chairs. It also has trainee life boat men. From the centre of the canteen, a large spiral staircase takes you up to the bar. Unfortunately, alcohol is not served until after 5pm as it is a place of education. The views from up here are magnificent. Members can use the accomadation, hostel style, for occasional use. There are several conference suites, which are really fab - I've interviewed in one of them. There are a couple of viewing places to watch the training pool, where trainees get ready for stormy seas and rescue techniques. Loos are clean and access is very good.
