I am an extremely infrequent visitor to the doctors and like most men I tend to let things get excruciating before I finally admit that I need to see a doctor. With this in mind I wasn't actually registered with a doctor it had been so long since my last visit. So just before Christmas I decided to get registered somewhere close to where I lived. I firstly went to a practice at the bottom of the Antrim Road which resembled a prison, luckily for me they weren't registering new patients, so I wandered further up the road and came to Salisbury Medical Practice. The practice itself resembles an old victorian manor house, welcoming, grand and warm. The doctors and staff evoke the same feelings. I went in to the practice on my first visit and to be honest I didn't even expect to be able to register but to my surprise they asked me to come back that afternoon to new patient registration (Thursday's). Once registered which was a simple process I was then able to book an appointment. To my complete and utter shock I was able to get one the next morning at 10am - Let's put this in to perspective. In 24 hours I was registered, booked and seen by a nurse and doctor. I can not recommend this practice enough - highly professional and caring. Easily the best medical experience of my life. For anyone worried about me, it's just a football injury!

Routine appointments are often booked up well in advance but they have a triage system whereby when you phone in the morning you receive a call back from either one of the GPs or the Nurse Practitioner who will discuss your symptoms and decide how soon you need to be seen, appointments are kept specifically for this purpose. I have lost track of how many GPs actually work here but there are 6 consulting rooms around the main waiting area at the back, a small room opposite a treatment room & a larger treatment room beside reception. Most staff are polite, friendly & helpful. Self service check in allows for quick check in and a reduction in queues at reception. You can register for online services too which allows you to securely book/cancel appointments and order repeat prescriptions. You can nominate a local pharmacy to collect your prescriptions too to save a journey, very handy service indeed.

The practice itself is simple, the waiting room is old fashioned but not in a run down way, it is old fashioned in a homely way. You know when you just feel at ease somewhere. The selection toys is good and it has a magazine selection that would rival a barbers. The Doctors in Ashley Medical Centre are first class, Dr Craig and Dr Ingram are experienced doctors and they will immediately put you at ease no matter what the ailment. They are calm and comforting, the whole surgery has this feel. It is very family orientated. The reception staff are made in the same mould as the Doctors as they are kind and welcoming, especially to new patients. If you need to register with a GP's surgery in the Bangor area then I would highly recommend Ashley Medical Centre, with good parking and a convenient location, it will prove to be just the tonic you may be looking for.

A few years ago when I lived nearby I attended Ormeau Health Centre as my local GP Surgery. As with all Surgeries these days, getting an appointment unfortunately proved tricky, with waits of up to a few days or even weeks on occasion. Thankfully though, they did offer a convenient telephone line whereby you could ring and speak to a Doctor or order prescriptions. You can also book appointments online and order repeat prescriptions 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week via their website. Plus Ormeau Health Centre have a travel clinic if you need to get jabs for your holidays. I always found the Receptionists, Nurses and Doctors friendly, helpful and professional. I would give this clinic a full 5 star rating if it weren't for the long waiting times before obtaining an appointment. Plus only allowing 10 minutes per patient for a Doctors appointment feels very rushed. However I think this is an issue with the Health Service overall (or our politicians and government) rather than this particular clinic, which I always found excellent.

When you ring for a prescription that's to go to a pharmacy it won't be done when they say. You'll make your way to collect it from the pharmacy to be told they never received the script, which happens frequently. You're best bringing your phone to ring and 'remind' them to do it. If you're bringing your baby use a carrier rather than a pram or you'll have to drag it up a long flight of stairs or leave it in their front hall. I've attached a pic of how many times I had to call them before I got anyone today.

I've been a few times with minor ailments, nothing particular interesting or worth a story. An ear infection was about as interesting as it got, of which I needed two or three different appointments to solve. The staff working at the front desk are all very helpful and courteous. It wasn't too much trouble getting an appointment even though the problem wasn't serious, I think it was roughly a week from when I first called. They have a team of doctors and nurses, of varying ages and experience however all the medical staff I dealt with were fantastic. Quick, to the point but certainly not skimming the surface. They are also very good as far as booking and picking up prescriptions without appointment. If you're living in the south Belfast area as a student or a 'Maaalone' resident then you can't go wrong with this well structured, professional practice.

Cars are often abandoned on double yellow lines and whilst it does have disabled spaces, I am yet to come across an empty one. The centre is usually always busy and it often takes a couple of weeks to a get a GP appointment, but then it seems everywhere does. The two things that make the greatest difference for me is the nurses station and the baby clinic. My hubby sliced his finger and fearing hours at a&e, we popped over to the nurses station, no appointment, no problem. He was in and out in 10 mins with bandages, ointment and aftercare advice. It was quick, efficient and easy, as it should be! The baby clinic runs on Thursday afternoons, it's also drop in, where after about a 10-15min wait you can see a Health Visitor and you don't even have to be registered there. Now if only they could sort out the parking...
