Upon arrival, I noticed that that there were a lot of other single diners who had been placed at the same table. So imagine a table full of people, but no one is talking. Weird. Anyway, the waitress was so nice and sweet! She greeted me in Finnish, but then switched to English when she saw the blank stare on my face. I ordered the combo plate which in California would normally cost about $5 cost the equivalent of $16!!! Crazy, right?! Such was life in Helsinki, super expensive! Anyway, my meal included small, but tasty, portions of sweet an sour chicken, fried prawns, beef and curry chicken. Everything tasted fresh and flavorful! I had a pleasant experience, I would highly recommend it.

Before ordering I was asked what I would like to drink. I replied, "Nothing. I don't want anything…read moreto drink." I was then promptly poured a glass of water which I was charged for. These dishonest surprise charges are unacceptable and completely ridiculous. Customers should not be forced to purchase tap water if they do not want to! This is a trashy and dishonest way to conduct business. New Bamboo Center, you can do better. Helsinki, you must demand better. In slightly related news, I was forced to pay for my take-away box, but only if I didn't want to carry my leftovers home in my pocket, so I guess that extra charge was ultimately my choice.

After reading on-line reviews touting Fusion Square as one of the best real Chinese restaurants in…read morethe Helsinki metropolitan area, I had high expectations. On the first occasion to eat out, I took my family to sample some good, Chinese food. Regretfully, we came back truly disappointed. The menu itself is very tempting, offering a very respectable sample of Chinese cuisine, with an expected overrepresentation of Cantonese fare (no dumplings or steamed buns though!). The problem is with execution. The food has neither flavour nor taste. I ordered "Twice cooked pork", while my wife got a "Lion's head". Both dishes we had before, both in Europe and in Beijing. The Lion's head, that my wife ordered, looked roughly as it was supposed to (two largish meatballs braised in soy-based sauce), but tasted like baby food, lacking virtually any flavour. The actual dish is supposed to provide some variation in texture by including napa cabbage and shredded water chestnuts (or other firm vegetable). Neither of these were detectable in the dish, with the meat balls being rather mushy. Not the greatest experience overall. The Twice cooked pork turned out to be rather tasty, if rather diminutive dish (altogether not more than 150 grams of food on the plate). The problem is that, while labeled with three peppers in the menu and originating from Sichuan province cuisine, the dish failed to have even a hint of detectable heat. After an inquiry, we learned that the restaurant does not add spices to the dishes in order to "make them better for non-Chinese people". With reluctance, my dish was taken back and refried with extra dried chillies (I got the same portion back, judging from half-bitten piece of pork). Then it was spicy enough (even a tiny bit over the top) - though in most realisations of this dish the head came from the spice paste, not dried chillies. The wonton soup we ordered was a bit peppery and had three small, sad wontons floating in it - but we expected this number, so it was not as disappointing. We had also a bread roll, which was very fatty and uninspiring (though satiating) and potato pancakes, which were a highlight of the meal, as they were actually good. The staff is apathetic and rather sluggish - but they tried to be polite and helpful, although a bit condescending. Their Finnish leaves (as far as we can tell) a bit to be desired. One person of the waiting staff admitted to speaking English, but all the people we interacted with seemed to understand it. Overall, objectively speaking this place is not a good value for money, nor is it a place to go to eat tasty, Chinese food. On the other hand, in comparison with the neighbouring options, it is not all that bad. The food was edible, did not give us food poisoning and some of it was even tasty. We will not come back, though. Whatever you do, stay away from the men's restroom, as it has a vile stench that can put even the most resilient people off eating there.

This was a happy surprise during our long journey in Europe!…read more It is near end of August, and Helsinki is already at chilling 10 degree C at night (I know it's not cold for the locals, but for people from Taiwan and California, it is already cold!) My family was very tired after 2 weeks of traveling in Europe, and we are staying at the very nice apartment hotel Aallonkoti, about 2 minutes away from the restaurant. My mother missed Asian cooking very much, so I decided to give this Chinese restaurant a try when I walked by. The restaurant seems to serve buffet as a dining-in option, but I went for the a la carte option anyways, because that's how Chinese people like to order :p I ordered stir fried green leafy veggies (not the mixed ones), a tofu dish, veggie fried noodles, chicken & corn soup, and lemon chicken with the waitress' recommendation. They came out all very delicious!! The seasoning was just right, not too salty. The veggies were fresh and had a good balance of crisp and moist. And the lemon chicken was super delish!!! The veggie portion in the noodle dish was very generous! Rice was good. Overall, we were all very happy! Despite that we still tried to eat some local Finnish food everyday, we actually ate one meal everyday from here during our stay in Helsinki! Haha XD The waitresses were very friendly. They even offered me hot tea while I waited for my take out order. If you happen to stay around the area and crave for some authentic Chinese dishes, try this place and go for the a la carte :)
